(Need Advice) Leaving China for a while – should I unlink my Chinese phone number from WeChat, Alipay, and other apps?

Hi everyone,

I’m leaving China in July and returning to my home country. I currently have a Chinese mobile number and broadband package with China Mobile.

I recently found out that my broadband is tied to a 2-year contract, and since I’ve only been in China for about a year, I would need to continue paying for both the broadband (~40 RMB/month) and a number retention plan (~8 RMB/month) if I want to keep my Chinese phone number active.

The China Mobile staff suggested that if I don’t really need the number anymore, I could just simply stop topping up money in my phone account and let the number be cancelled after I leave. If I come back to China in the future, I can just get a new SIM card from another service provider. I have chosen to go this route.

My question is:

  • If I let the number expire, should I unlink or change the phone number on WeChat, Alipay, bank accounts, Taobao, 12306, etc. before I leave? Or I can just leave it. The only thing I'm afraid is that if I don't unlink the number, then the number can be given to a new customer and they have access to my wechat and alipay accounts? Is this possible?
  • Is it possible to change WeChat and Alipay to a foreign phone number? How hard/easy is this?
  • Are there any apps or accounts that become particularly difficult to recover once the Chinese number is gone?
  • And If in the future, I may return to China occasionally for work, can I still relink my apps to a new Chinese phone number?

Would love to hear what others have done!

Thanks!

Where can I find someone to sublet/take over my apartment in Shanghai? Landlord already approved

Hi everyone,

I’m currently renting an apartment in China, but I need to move out earlier than expected. My lease officially runs until September 2026, but I will need to leave around early July 2026.

I have already spoken to my landlords, and they are open to me finding someone to take over/sublet the remaining period. Their main condition is that if someone can continue the lease so they don’t lose rent, then we can discuss the deposit return.

So I wanted to ask:

  • Where is the best place to find someone who needs a short-term apartment/sublet in China?
  • Are there any good platforms, apps, WeChat groups, university groups, or expat groups where I can post this?
  • The apartment would be available from around July until September 2026, so it may be suitable for someone looking for a short-term summer stay or temporary housing.

I already have landlord approval, so I’m trying to do everything properly and transparently. I just don’t know where people usually look for short-term sublets in China.

Any advice would be really appreciated. Thank you!

Serviced apartment recommendation

Hi I'll be studying at Sungkyunkwan University (Humanities & Social Sciences Campus) in Jongno District for 3-4 months. and would appreciate it so much if someone could recommend me a serviced apartment. It can or cannot be in Jongno as long as the commute is convenient. I don't want to live in the dorms. Thank you!

Attached pics below -

Hi everyone. I’m honestly really stressed and mentally exhausted right now and would really appreciate some advice or even reassurance from dermatologists/people who have gone through something similar.

About a month ago I developed redness, itching, dryness, and irritation around my mouth/lips. I don't drink, low intake of sugar, and also don't smoke. Initially I saw a dermatologist in China (I live here) who prescribed:

  • a steroid with antibiotic cream 1 week
  • pimecrolimus 1 week after finished using the steroid
  • moisturizer/barrier cream 2 weeks

My condition improved A LOT on those medications especially when I was using the steroid. When I was on the pimecrolimus the rash came back but were much better than the original (before using anything). So I decided to go for a follow up.

I went to a follow-up appointment with a more senior dermatologist at Skin Disease Hospital. She re-evaluated me and did a skin scraping/fungal test (not sure whats the exact test name) around my mouth. The results apparently showed “a small amount of spores” (I don’t fully understand because everything was in Chinese), and she diagnosed:

  • perioral dermatitis
  • seborrheic dermatitis

She then told me to STOP the steroid and pimecrolimus completely and switch to:

  • oral doxycycline (20 days)
  • antifungal solution twice daily
  • moisturizer/barrier repair cream

I've been on this treatment for 2 days. and the problem is my skin feels like it’s getting worse again:

  • more redness
  • more itching
  • burning/tightness
  • dryness and flakiness around the mouth corners
  • irritation

I also have ADHD/OCD so I know I hyperfocus and obsess over my skin a lot, which probably makes the stress even worse. I keep checking mirrors and taking photos constantly because I’m terrified it’s getting worse.

I’m struggling mentally because part of me feels like:
“If I just use the steroid cream again this would all calm down immediately.”

But I also understand there may be rebound/steroid withdrawal issues around the mouth and that the doctors may be trying to break that cycle.

I guess I just want to ask:

  • What should I do?
  • Has anyone experienced worsening/redness after stopping steroid or pimecrolimus?
  • Did doxycycline eventually help?
  • Did antifungal treatment initially irritate your skin more?
  • How long did it take before things improved?
  • Does this sound more like rebound irritation or treatment failure?

I’ve attached my photos (at current time) for reference. Thank you so much. I’m honestly feeling really overwhelmed right now.

Hi All,

I'm planning to go explore Fujian alone and it would be nice if anyone can recommend where I must go as a solo traveler and relatively limited budget. I would love to go see the Tulou but it seems like traveling there (alone) is very very difficult and could be quite expensive? I am planning to go to Fuzhou and maybe Xiamen. But not sure what else. Wuyi mountain I am not planning to go as I have climbed other mountains in China. I would really appreciate any recommendations. And I can speak some Chinese. Thank you so much :)
