I’m tired of joining Discords for projects
Call me antiquated, but I think GitHub is seriously the safer option for any project. And it irks me to see a lot of relatively cool projects be locked behind joining a Discord.
Homebrew is built off of FOSS. It always has been. Everything that has ever been put on your DS not by Nintendo is publicly available. Homebrew is built on this idea that we shouldn’t be restricted to what we’re allowed to have, but to whatever we want because it’s our device. That’s why sharing code always becomes such a big deal around this. So why should I have to ask permission to join a Discord to download a binary? Why can’t I build it myself to my preference? Why can’t I edit it? You’ve taken a bunch of open source libraries and made your creation fall in the same vein as downloading from Nintendo. I know what it is, but I don’t know what’s inside it.
Part of why I dislike it is that homebrew in and of itself is unsigned code. That’s why we’re here, that’s why we like it, and that’s why a Discord makes it dangerous. Homebrewed apps can run whatever call they want, and while most times I doubt it, there could always be something malicious there.
With a lot of these port projects hidden under Discord’s veil, these are just forks compiled down to the 3DS. Why would I want to join your Discord? And better yet, why would you want to hide it behind a Discord when other people can offer logs, contributions, issues, edge cases, all the things that can be publicly seen. People can contribute to that and make things roll along! I’m tired of open source forks becoming proprietary.
If you’re hiding AI usage, don’t bother. People who dislike AI can distance themselves from the project or replace AI code with their own, and people who are fine with it will use it anyways. To each their own, but at least let us see what’s going on.
Worse yet, when these projects get abandoned, who’s going to pick them up if the community enjoys them? That codebase isn’t available, so the project just becomes abandoned.
And lastly, why does a platform that’s begging for identification need to be where it’s sourced? Discord isn’t safe hosting, it’s just gatekeeping. Ban anyone you don’t enjoy from accessing it. Discord isn’t conducive to the sort of community I see homebrew being centered around.
Sorry for the whole rant and mods feel free to remove this if you want, but needing to join a Discord to download an app is ridiculous to me, and I get why it makes people upset.
