Spike squid for Antares rivals of war, beyond wild space

Across the abyssal plains and in deep trenches Quilna have reported lights in the endless darkness. These lights usually coincided with the death of a large creature. Called *Yichu-nuk'ixa* or "the lights that lead the dead" they were seen as a type of Psychopomp or guardian of the afterlife.

In reality the spike squids are massive bioluminescent scavengers that live in the deep water regions of Yuchic. They have relatively small mouths for an animal their size so they use the scissor like claws on the tip of their 6 main tentacles to disassemble large corpses. The bioluminescent spots on their bodies are used for communication and asserting dominance.

While similar in appearance to Earth Cephalopods they are actually closer to crustaceans than mollusks. Spike squids are heavily armored with boney plates on their tentacles, large boney spikes connected to the muscle tissue and an internal shell covering their vital organs.

Spike squids are found below 540 meters to 2000 meters in depth they rarely approach the bottom and prefer to feed while a carcass is still drifting down. The theory is that they have trouble navigating around solid surfaces at their size. Others believe they are simply afraid of something on the bottom.

Yuchic was reseeded by a species called the Cuti approximately 20 million years ago. So some of the spike Squids traits are based on Cuti biology.

[OC] Tyixon and Tymoya the last singing sharks of Yuchic Antares rivals of war beyond wild space

The Tysodonicas were once global travelers across yuchic moving from their polar feeding grounds to the tropics to breed. These 20 meter long giants were always extremely sensitive to heat sometimes waiting decades for conditions to be right to attempt mating. When the Hybrids began refining Trevnium on yuchic the pollution altered the climate raising the water temperature just 2⁰ C on average. This was devastating to the Tysodonicas and hundreds died trying to breed. More were lost to noise pollution, algae blooms and lack of food. They were thought to be extinct until 2 separate Quilna expiditions turned up a 130 year old male they called Tyxion and a 78 year old female they named Tymoya. While the discovery of 2 members of an endangered species and a male and female at that would normally be cause for celebration there was a very big problem. Tyixon lived at the North Pole and Tymoya lived at the South pole. They're essentially cut off from one another by an ocean that would cook them alive if they tried to cross it. More concerning Tyxion has started to sing. he's sending infrasonic pulses into the water to coordinate the breeding migration with Tymoya if either of them attempt the journey with the water temperature as high as it is, it's the end of the species.

[OC] Hinikki, the Chainsaw shark Antares rivals of war beyond wild space

The Hinikki (Hi-Nec-Ki) an armor piercing specialist. It's teeth are organized on three interlocking whirls connected to massive crushing jaw muscles. The bottom jaws actually rotate as they open pointing inward 90⁰ from their closed position allowing the Hinikki to grasp struggling prey items. Despite their impressive size of 7.8m and nearly a ton in weight they're quite athletic. They can cover vast distances, dive to nearly 800m and reach speeds of 120kph. The kinetic energy mixed with the specialized bite has earned them the grim nickname of "the Chainsaw shark". armored fish and crustaceans are often cut in half by the Sheering action of the Hinikki's jaws.

Sharks are known as a "Universal lifeform" in the Antares universe. Evolution tends to make them at its earliest convenience when presented with similar environmental pressures. Even on a world reseeded by the Cuti like Yuchic the pressures that produce sharks are still shaping organisms into the perfect predator.

[OC] The Wellie! Antares rivals of war: beyond wild space

In the tower kelp forests under an endlessly churning sea near the pole of Yuchic lives a creature so elusive some doubt it's existence. The Wellie also known as the splayed-head strike eel is a rarely seen Titanic fish. They live in rocky burrows near the edges of kelp thickets. The average size of a Strike Eel is about 4 meters still substantial for a predator. However the legendary Wellie is reported to be at least 30m long. The electric organs along its side that it uses to sense it's prey are said to be so powerful they alter the local weather patterns. The northern regions of Yuchic are extremely under explored and most dismiss the claims of the Wellie as at best, myth.

[OC] Planets of the Perseus Arm Antares rivals of war

In Antares rivals of war the Void Path station located in the Iona system links to an area in the Perseus Arm near the Rose Garden Nebula. This active star forming region causes some interesting geologic activity in the rocky planets around the nebula. Namely the formation of a rare super heavy element in the crust called Trevnium by the Neu-Vasugian people that are attempting to conquer this region to extract the metal. Trevnium is only stable in the crust of rocky worlds found within 5 light years of a star forming region. It decays rapidly into lighter elements but in the process over half the atoms mass is converted into antimatter providing the fuel for the Neu-Vasugian ( or Hybrids as they are known) civilization. While many planets in the region are suitable the hybrids internationally target habitable worlds first to provide them with food, comfort and a work force if necessary. They have repeatedly subjugated worlds across the Perseus Arm and the region around the Rose Garden Nebula is just the latest target.

The 4 main planets in the region are Xulticla, Ttipra, Hyawathi and Yuchic.

Xulticla has been an outpost for the Zoopaw for many years, the coalition of arthropod like aliens use the planet as a farming and mining outpost mostly limited to the two northern continents . The Zoopaw are an advanced space fairing species but they lack the technology and understanding to extract Trevnium themselves. When the Hybrids approached them and asked to extract the material the hive mothers granted them mining rights to the two equatorial continents. They failed to mention the Appono that called those forests home. Using gurrila tactics honed by years of fighting the Zoopaw the Appono have fought a devastating campaign against the Hybrids. The paleolithic Appono use brutal hit and run tactics, take advantage of the environment and the weapons of their enemies to great effect. The 2.8 meter tall flying nocturnal Arthropods can fly into a hybrid camp undetected, take what they want, kill indiscriminately and leave before the alarm can be raised. The Hybrids stationed here have a saying "Nobody sleeps on Xulticla"

Ttipra is an icy world, it's thought to have drifted away from it's star over the last 20 million years only being kept alive by the tidal forces of its two massive moons. This causes volcanos and geothermal activity around the equator which keep the planet from completely freezing solid. This geologic activity also exposes massive amounts of Trevnium so much so that a majority of fauna on this planet is able to metabolize ionizing radiation directly. The native population called the Grubin are tenacious but the Hybrids are well practiced at colonization. They have killed much of the game animals, desecrated sacred sites and forced the Grubin off their ancestral lands in an attempt to starve them into submission. Still the hybrids range is limited to 50,000 square km around the toothed sea.

Hyawathi is an arid planet with an extremely powerful magnetic field. The native population called the Marrisi are able to navigate via maglev across great distances. This high magnetic field actually causes pain to the Hybrids which have a natural electroreceptive 6th sense. The Hybrids must live in shielded bunkers and travel via armored vehicles. As such they have very little understanding of the Ecosystem of Hyawathi sometimes the Marrisi take full advantage off. They tell them staple food sources are toxic, spin tales of vengeful demons and spirits then train predators to associate their vehicles with food, tell them to build in areas prone to wildfires Intentionally sabotage Roads keeping the vehicle bound invaders away from important strategic locations. Myth is a weapon here.

Yuchic is a water World and is probably the most advanced planet in the region. The native Quilna have a mid 20th century Earth level of technology. Partially because of the difficulty of extracting the Trevnium themselves the Hybrids force the Quilna to mine the Ore themselves using hybrid technology. As a result the Quilna have unprecedented Access to hybrid technology which they reverse engineer on mass in secret facilities and distribute to their allies across the region. they also purposefully make the refinement process as slow and inefficient as possible eating into the Hybrids profits in a hope to make the venture unsustainable.

I plan on doing a design contest for creatures from these four planets in October so I needed better maps.

Homicidal dinosaur.

I'm loving update 17 but the aggression levels of preexisting dinosaurs needs some work. My worst offenders are torvosaurus, velociraptors and triceratops H. Also to make matters worse the combat animations cause them to get hung up on prebuilt terrain and they don't exit combat. The male Triceratops has killed all the edmontosaurus' and I went from 14 raptors to 3 during a 2 hour session.

Apparently I have a grub problem.

All of my root vegetable crops have been really disappointing so far, I can't even find an onion, only 10 out of 150 carrots are decent sized Radishes are barely holding on and big plants like corn keep falling over, I've been pretty stumped as to why until I saw these two today. A male Thynnid wasp and a clubed mydas-fly. Both species have been hanging out around the garden this week. They have one thing in common both of their larva feed on scarab beetle grubs. If they're both hanging out in my garden that means they have food it also explains why my heavy rooted plants are struggling. I'm going to research what I can do about beetle grubs.

Looking for win cons in blue

I've been working on this deck for a while and I've reached a point where it functions beautifully. It's just missing a fun way to win the game my current win cons are Kappa canoneer, mechanized production and an overloaded rise and shine. Those seem very "unga bunga" to me. I'm open to suggestions.

140 days later...

I harvested 2 of my 6 potato plants I got a little under a kg. Between that and the broccoli I grew as a trap crop I got about 3 lbs of food out of these pots. I'm going to try something different for the Fall crop.

I've actually never had one of these myself, we had them at a restaurant I worked at but they were so expensive the chef wouldn't let us try them and this is my first time growing them. If I had to describe the flavor it would be sweet with a mild horseradish finish.
