Erster VW Käfer - worauf achten beim Kauf?

Huy, Belgium

2nd day of a 6-day trip from Cologne to Paris. Started around Kelmis that morning, would eventually end up close to Namur very late at night. This is just before the second severe thunderstorm of the day, which (along with heaviness of both legs and bike) is why I could not bring myself to attempt the famous Mur de Huy that day. Next time, I guess...

My first trip: Cologne to Paris

Nothing too adventurous, no camping. Just my first multi-day bike trip and a great experience, so I thought I'd share.

Rode long sections of the Eurovelo 3.

Second day was the longest and most challenging: 130+ km in very changeable and at times terrible weather conditions.

Most enjoyable section was between Maubeuge and La Fère: first through green meadows and fields, then along shady paths by the l'Oise and eventually following the Sambre-l'Oise-Canal.

Day 5 was more or less a rest day with just 60km from La Fère and Compiègne.

And the moment when the top of the Eiffel Tower first came into view around 40km outside of Paris was absolutely priceless and made me forget all about the strong headwinds that kept slowing me down on the final day.

Definitely not my last trip of this kind.

Overall I was pretty happy with my setup (even the improvised backpack-as-handlebar-bag solution worked surprisingly well). If I had to change one thing before the next trip, it would probably be to switch out the seat for something a little more comfortable.

My setup for a 6-day "credit card" ride

I'll be riding from Cologne to Paris over six days next week. I'll never be too far from civilization, so if I run out of food or water at any point, it shouldn't be much of a problem. I've also got Airbnbs booked for each of the five nights, and I think the days I have planned (between 50 and 130km) should all be manageable.

Here's what I'm planning to bring and where to pack it:

rear panniers:

- extra cycling clothes

- rain jacket

- one set of clothes and a pair of shoes for my three days in Paris

- tablet

- book

- picnic blanket

- video drone

- phone charger and cables

- essential toiletries

frame bag:

- spare inner tubes

- duct tape

- case for my glasses, energy bars/gels

- small first aid kit

top tube bag:

- powerbank

- bars/gels

- case for earbuds

- wallet

saddle bag:

- extra inner tube

- chain lube

- tyre levers

- multitool

backpack/handlebar bag (turns out my small cycling backpack doubles pretty well as a handlebar bag and I won't have to carry it after all):

- 2l hydration bladder

What am I missing? What should I leave at home? What should I do differently? What haven't I thought of yet?

post-2015 songs that will endure?

This question has probably been asked before, but here goes nothing:

what popular songs released over the last 10-or-so years do you think will actually stand the test of time and will still be listened to, say, 50/60/70 years from now?

I'll go ahead and nominate the Weeknd's "Blinding Lights"

Devin Davis - Lonely People of the World, Unite!

Recently listened to this album again for the first time in a long time and boy, did it bring back memories for me!

In August 2006, I was about to turn 24 and had just landed in Chicago where I spent a couple of days before heading to Madison for my year abroad at the University of Wisconsin (I'm from Germany). I'd been traveling a bit on my own before this, but this was really my first longer-term stay abroad, and I enjoyed the hell out of the feeling of freedom that came with that.

Now, this was a time before smartphones (I distinctly remember the first time I ever held an iPhone in my hands in Madison's West Towne Mall about a year later), so everything about this felt a little more like an adventure than I imagine it would feel nowadays.

On my first or second night in Chicago, I took the El out to the Ukrainian village to go see a show at the Empty Bottle: Devin Davis and Beirut. Two artists I'd never heard about before, but the announcement in the Chicago Reader had piqued my interest.

To this day, the show I saw that night remains among my favorite live music experiences ever, and I'd seen a lot of shows before and have seen a whole bunch more since.

Conor Oberst and his band were definitely the highlight of the night, but the opening act, the aforementioned Mr Davis, certainly left an impression as well. He went on stage by himself and used a loop station to record himself playing drums, guitar and singing - the first time I'd ever seen something like this happening on stage. And it was obvious that he was putting his heart and soul into these tunes.

I bought both albums at the merch stand that night (Davis' Lonely People and Beirut's Gulag Orkestar) and these two CDs (along with The Hold Steady's Boys and Girls in America) were on heavy rotation in my rental car as I went for a road trip through the Midwest about a week later.

I don't know if I've ever been more excited about new music than I was during that time in the mid-2000s. So many great albums came out in the span of that year alone (Spoon's Ga Ga... and Bon Iver's For Emma... are two that come to mind immediately, also Loney Dear's Loney Noir).

As far as I'm aware, Devin Davis has not released any music since. And probably not enough people have listened to this still very listenable record. But boy am I happy and grateful that he released this batch of songs when he did, and that I got to see him perform them at exactly that moment in my life.

Is there anyone here who also remembers this album as fondly as I do?

Music for long hours on the bike

I'll be cycling for a couple of days next week. I'm planning to spend 4-8 hours on the bike each day and I want to take the opportunity to listen to some music. What albums should I put on?

▲ 5 r/Jazz

The plan is to expand my jazz collection by purchasing at least one album for every year of my life so far. I've been getting great suggestions here for the first two years, so we're on to year number three now: 1984. Let's see what you've got!

A little while ago I asked you for your favorite albums of '82 for a project of mine which will eventually have me expanding my jazz collection with at least one album each for every year of my life so far.

And while I haven't made any purchases yet, I've really had quite a bit of fun listening to some of your suggestions for that year. So I'm back today to ask for your favorites for year number two: 1983. Let's hear what you've got!
