First time trying guache. Would love feedback and critique!

I mostly do watercolours. I'm actually so shocked and happy how this turned out! Especially since it's just cheap sketchbook paper.

What I noticed is that you need more paint than you think, paint dries very fast on a mixing pallet, and I'm sure you see, I love you can do highlights afterwards! I need smaller flat brushes.

Questions.

What do you do with mixing pallet, in my case a plate, afterwards? With watercolor you can reactivate to same results, so I tend to keep my pallet for a time. With gouache I know you can reactivate, but it's never back to same like fresh out of tube. I tried not to squeeze too much paint on the pallet to minimise the waste, but then you have to frequently add paint as it dries there fast as well. What a roller coaster.

What kind of paper is your favourite for gouache?

Can you do smoother transitions? Better blending and diffusing? If you see my watercolors I love details and smooth blending. This painting is considered veery rough in my world. Do I mix more in between tones or do I blend on the painting more, like back and forth?

Maybe I need to watch some tutorials. I'll definitely read more on it!

Last one for a while. Back on cold pressed paper.

I added previous one done on hot pressed, if you zoom in you can see the paper texture and how it affects the paint behavior and final result.

I feel like I like both cold and hot pressed papers to work with, they're so different but both enjoyable once you get a hang of it. I'm still waiting to get a hang of it.

But I really like how all the peonies came out!

Peonies in purple. This time on hot pressed paper. This was a struggle.

Hot pressed paper is so not for me I think. I go back to it from time to time and I'm always there thinking why is this soo hard. Very frustrating. It's so much nicer to do the sketch due to its smoothness, but it's so oooo hard to blend the paint.

Emerald wishes.

Watercolor with dip pen on calligraphy paper. Love using watercolor paint to do lettering for cards and letters as I can make it any colour I need.

First time trying Prismacolors.

Swipe for reference photo I took back in April.

So to be honest I'm not sure I get the hype about these. They are nice and soft, they can be sharpened to a good point, though it goes quickly enough, due to that softness, and they layer nicely and all. I think maybe I was expecting something, like, amazing, not sure. I read they don't make fake ones, so I got these on Amazon on sale, but the writing on them is a bit sloppy. I think Faber Castell Black Edition are so much better considering the price to value ratio. I haven't tried the reds yet as that's the only thing that's a bit of a weak point of FCBE. And I definitely need to try these on better paper cause this is just relatively cheap sketchbook. You can find my works in FCBE or Derwent drawing in my post history.

All in all kind of meh but I'll experiment more.

In this drawing I really didn't like how the branches on the left turned out so did them in a different way on the right. Just experimented.

Nyx Make 'em wonder swatches

Top to bottom

02 Fair porcelain

08 Vanilla

06 Light

09 Light nude

Photos:

  1. In the store fresh swatches.

  2. In the car after drying down (I'm wearing very red top so everything has red cast, sorry)

3, 4, 5. At home, completely dry, after three hours.

These were the lightest shades available. Sorry for doing them not in order. I really wanted to try it as it feels like the formula is waterproof and it doesn't budge once it dries down.

02 is peachy, 08 is too dark and peachy, 06 is Peppa Pig Pink and 09 is Trump Orange.

Does anyone know if the shades I'm missing are any better? I can make it more green with mixer but I gate too dark foundations and I on a warm side so I'll take yellow over pink any day.
