Fold8 Form factor hype

Fold8 Form factor hype

The Fold8 is roughly an inch shorter than the Fold7 and the same width as the S26 Ultra closed. But this small difference has been a game changer in handiness. I agree with a common sentiment that this passport size should be a new option for non-foldables. But I still do welcome a folding device.

Festival Mall's creek area

One of the more unique malls that follows the creek. There's a pathway that transitions into a park by the river and opens up to the Central Park area.

Fold8 tent mode

This "tent" mode is fast becoming my favorite way to view content. From work calls to watching videos, it's super convenient. Wondering if your preorders have arrived already.

Fold8 camera sample shots

Here are some shots of the Fold8 at 0.6, 2, 4x, and 10x zoom. The camera is fairly decent for everyday photos. The lack of true telephoto may or may not be a concern. I guess it depends on your everyday use cases.

For 10x try viewing on desktop / bigger screen to see.

Samsung Fold8 with 3 windows

Two window config was pretty straightforward but you can add a 3rd window by dragging apps from the bottom of the screen. Tried dragging a fourth window but it locks it out to 3 only. The all vertical layout (2nd photo) makes more sense if you want ULTRA DOOM SCROLLING.

Fold8 first impressions

Been using the Fold 8 for about a week now and here are my first impressions. I was a Fold7 and S26 Ultra user so I will compare with these in mind.

  1. It seems that Samsung has drawn a fine line between the S-series and the Z-fold series when it comes to camera. The Fold8 lacks a telephoto lens and instead uses 10x digital zoom. It's "OK" for your usual tourist shots. Definitely not a concert camera though. The S26 Ultra has superior zoom.

  2. I am SUPER LOVING this form factor. I told a friend that the 4:3 or 3:4 aspect ratio seems to look more natural when watching Netflix or other videos. It's also great for gaming (Wuthering Waves is in the photo gallery here). In one of the photos I am watching video using the other screen and using the fold as a stand. It's become a favorite way for me to watch while eating. Pag naglalaro ako ng Pokemon Go for some reason it feels easier to catch Pokemon on the closed screen -- maybe because the height is smaller so I don't need to drag my thumb too much when throwing balls.

  3. The width of the outer screen is more or less the same length of the S26 Ultra so it's a tad wider than the Fold7 when closed. (photo comparisons of Fold7 vs Fold8 above)

  4. The one handed use takes a while to get used to but it gets comfortable quite quickly. My pinky ends up supporting the bottom of the phone so I use a magsafe compatible case with a pop strap.

  5. All in all, this device is really meant to be for content consumption. Samsung really nailed this form factor. I've seen threads saying that Samsung should keep this form without the folding mechanism and I agree -- there should be an option for that in the future!

  6. Is it worth the preorder? I would say if you're coming from a previous foldable, the form factor alone can be quite enticing. It's the best "upgrade" among the three new foldables as the Fold8 Ultra and the Flip8, although nice, are more of the same in terms of a generational upgrade.

Freelance vs Employment

Mid 40's w/ family here. So I have been in the workforce for 25 years. An observation for my industry (marketing / PR / digital) is that as I stay, it makes more sense to become a registered professional paying 8% tax instead of an employee. I have some reasons:

First, if you're a go-getter, there's more opportunity to grow your business with 2-3 regular clients per month. Second, the job stability before is different now. So many layoffs due to AI and the economy so the promise of tenure isn't as invincible as before. If corporate will trimhte fat, they will usually keep the freelancers with no benefits and other obligations like 13th month pay, etc. Third, you won't feel as bad paying for PhilHealth because you can declare minimum income at 500 pesos a month contribution -- this isn't a hack. Philhealth mismo nagsabi when I went to change status to freelancer. Exact words were "assume nyo po na some months wala kayo income."

Of course the shift requires some discipline with filing taxes so get a good accountant to do that for you. Mahirap ang undeclared especially if you have a family and service clients who require a service invoice.

Yung takeaway ko dito is that I now have better control of my income stream. If I want to buy a new camera or save for a Japan trip, I will exert extra effort to get more clients and this usually pays off vs working a 9-5. But then I am also saying this from the point of view as someone with 25 years worth of industry contacts. So there's that.

How's it in your industry?
