Matrimonio by Gonzalo Mallarino Flórez

A brief novella that captures complexity of a subset of revolutionary actors.

La Cuadra by Gilmer Mesa

La cuadra by Gilmer Mesa. Difficult in subject, masterfully executed in writing.

Dónde enterré a Fabiana Orquera by Cristian Perfurmo

Dónde enterré a Fabiana Orquera by Cristian Perfurmo. Recently finished. Lots of engaging twists.

Santa Rita by Gonzalo Mallarino Flórez

Santa Rita by Gonzalo Mallarino Flórez. Recently finished. Fenomenal.

Waiting at the 👨🏽‍⚕️

It’s real 🥵 out here in the D (whatupdoe!) and instead of being out and about near water, waiting on this specialist for a routine consult. Aging like my WC Natural DS on the 55; they don’t (or ever) hurt unlike my body every-so-often. Have a great book to keep this guy (🙋🏽‍♂️) entertained.

Recalibrating Parent’s Account for Retirement

This is about my father, 66 turning 67 this year. He works as a laborer in construction. Has done so since a teenager. Married to my mother that for many reasons never could work. It is not until these last 16 years that the finally got into a positive work situation to earn money and save. Too late to the party to afford buying a house (his dream); enough to buy his dream vehicle from the dealer in 2015; never spent money on luxury/ridiculous items; one vacation a year to the homeland for two weeks.

Through a lot of fights about his distrust of banks/financial institutions, he agreed with putting money into the 401k plan at work about 15 years ago (employer matches 4%). Even then he wanted most of that money in stable funds/bonds so a lot of it initially went there. That was a fight that took years, but he softened up these last eight years and now they are spread out on various buckets. Last five years he has maxed out 401k but not catchup bucket. The decisions on where the money goes is whatever his employer recommended.

I now have access to his account info. He is putting 90% of his contributions into the LifeGoal funds below as of 1/2026. I don’t understand the thought process of why so much money was recommended and directed to LifeGoal 2050. These buckets are all over the place but his rate of return is 11% for last 12 months (market is doing well so expected). He is risk adverse and still doesn’t like that the money is there instead of a “mattress.” I’m pushing that he retire next year or drastically reduce his 50-65 hours a week. My sense is that with SS, his savings, and drawing down his 401k, that he will be ok. I ran the numbers. I’ll cover my mother’s health insurance costs until she turns 65 (so about 2 years) if he does a full work stop.

My ask here is what to do with the current buckets: leave them alone, move things around and if so what to consider? Thanks for any feedback.

Feedback Request: Ghost 18 / Ghost 17 / Glycerin 23

In search of new daily walking sneakers (city pavement and treadmills) as I rarely run (but might be open to doing short trots now). Recently I was measured and assessed at a sneaker store, along with trying many potential shoes to meet activity/neutral and activity/stability. I have a history of rolling ankles (mostly my left) and lost (over the last 15 months) about 65 pounds (at about 242 right now and 6’01”). I do not like the super spongy, tall/thick soled shoes that they were showing at first (Adidas, Hokas, etc.). The final two contenders were Glycerin 23 and Ghost 18. Glycerin felt like they had “rails” of support on the sides and were a great fit with insoles. The Ghost 18 felt great (even if did not feel like they had “rails”) with insoles and slightly closer to the ground, which is what I really like. While pricing should not matter too much, there is about a $30 difference (Glycerin 23 is higher).

At this point, the lean is to buy the Ghost 18s. The sales rep acted odd though and asked if I ever wore the Ghost 17s; she did not ask/provide any more information beyond that. I decided to take a step back before buying and left the store. Did some further research online.

Any feedback by people that used Ghost 17s and now are using Ghost 18s? What are major differences or similarities in your experience ? Worth the move to 18s?

Any feedback from people that use the Glycerin 23s and Ghosts?

Thanks for any information.

NBD - Prof. Barnets Neocliffwood Engineer (Maryam Italian horsebutt black)

tl;dnr: The Neocliffwood Engineer Boot 11 inch in Maryam Italian horsebutt are legitimately exceptional quality and workmanship MTOs. The work by Prof. Barnets is on point. Give them a shot if you are on the fence. Here are pics.

Timing
Process of ordering began in November 2025, fully ordered first week of December 2025, and delivered June 1 (projection of April 2026).

Ordering Process
An engineer boot (Neocliffwood Engineer Boot 11 inch) in Maryam natural Andrea leather was my goal purchase, but Prof. Barnets no longer carried it. (I sent through WhatsApp versions of the boot that appealed to me.) The alternative on my list was Maryam Italian horsebutt black. Harris offered other leathers for consideration: Badalassi natural or Maryam toscanello, along with other variations. Decided on moving forward with Maryam Italian horsebutt black.

There were back-and-forth communications (over days) with Harris on sizing along with photos and videos through WhatsApp (e.g., length, ball, instep, ankle, heel, height to calf). I wanted to make sure I got it right and they were committed to that process too. My biggest concern in ordering (and why I hesitated for a year) then is the sheer unknown with ordering from a shoemaker in the other part of the world (Indonesia) while in the U.S. and potentially receiving MTOs that do not fit correctly. Definitely not the result and extremely satisfied with the process and boots now that they are here.

You will need to be patient with the communication, be extra clear, and review the updates as they send them before agreeing to the build. It is all through WhatsApp. Prompt too. Just make sure you are reviewing things and when they ask you to measure a certain part of your foot again, do it as that is how we caught a mistake on one measurement. We also talked about whether to keep it as unstructured toe or go with unstructured; ended up going unstructured because I preferred the sleek toe look and it allows for more of the potential rolls with use.

Payment
Done through PayPal. Once the boots are in the U.S., duty paid through DHL. DHL delivers with signature unless you change the delivery method.

Boots
The boots came in a Prof. Barnets blue box. Each boot came in their own bag (along with a pair of socks). After inspecting them, the workmanship is impeccable and that hand sowing and build is substantiated in such a great fit. They are like my Nicks that fit like a glove. My right foot has a slightly higher instep than the left so a little extra push to get that foot in but once in, the heel locked perfectly (just as on the left one). Measurements are spot on for both boots. Enough space in the front area in length. Enough space for adequate toe movement and the arch support is there. I use thick socks with boots. Sleek toe is on point. There is nothing negative about the construction or aesthetic design or feel.

Shafts are well made; not too large or “skinny” or bothersome when walking.

For now, the boots are for home wear until I am able to do real cement walking with them (long story why that must wait). Still in search of a Maryam Italian natural leather boot though!

About three years ago the All of Us project provided a Versa 4, and I have used it daily since then. Find it helpful to check my progress (or mostly challenges in meeting goals). I rely on it more for over a year because of cardiac monitoring. The device is failing – only holds a charge for 1.5 days, sometimes 2. Wondering if I should buy another Versa 4 or is there another device in the Fitbit universe to consider? Part of me likes using it for multi-purpose tracking and that it functions as a watch. At the same time, I do not use other “proper” watches that I want to actually use more often. Any thinner devices that would not look odd as an alternative to Versa 4 to use along with a watch?

Easy questions, maybe. What is a recommended leather conditioner for a WC natural double stuffed that will not darken the leather? How do people use Nicks heavy duty leather preserve that comes with boots and how often? Thanks.
