Looking for feedback on my first practice rectangle please!

I went to Edinburgh recently and decided I would pick up some wool as souvenir, and justified beginning a new hobby. I borrowed stitch n bitch from the library and supplemented with the nimble needles continental knitting video. I’d like some feedback please on this rectangle!

No pattern or project yet, just want to get in a lot of practice before i attempt my first project (which is scarf no. 4 by my favourite things or jolilab leonie). I’ve only started 4 days ago and im hooked 😉 I had a couple of projects in mind already when I went to shop, so the needles I got were 3.5mm and 4.0mm. I think it might have been easier to start with a larger needle, but I wanted to only buy what was necessary for my project.

I find the purl stitch quite fiddly, and I have to decrease my tension waaay more. My needles are bamboo, and initially when I thought I got the knit stitch rhythm down I wished I tried a stainless steel needle, but the moment I started practicing the purl stitch I thanked the heavens my first needle is bamboo and grippy. I lost many a row practicing the purl stitch 😂

My first (and last for a while) haul

Special thanks to this community for helping me find a dupe for Essie of corset, which then led me to the rest of these purchases which were not planned 😂 I posted a few days ago but didnt realise feet pics were against sub rules, so heres my photos without them :) this was my first indie haul, and last for a while until I finish a bottle (my personal promise to myself). I have to say, where have these large nail brushes been all my life? They make it so much easier for me not to f up the nail polish, especially when doing my dominant hand.

I can’t stop looking at my hands. This colour looks so different in different lighting, it is so beautiful.

I’ve also discovered a way go more consistently use nail oil - a roller bottle. I tried the watercolor brush recommended here before, but I couldn’t figure out how to apply it in a less messy way. The roller bottle has solved all my issues and I’m happy to report I oil my nails almost more than once a day! Another upside to oiling my nails is also moisturising my hands, which really helps my eczema. I use the same oil for my eczema as the nail oil (has jojoba base).

Haul
- polish thinner (thank you for the advice on checking the ingredients)
- picture polish - korma
- EdM such a farse
- EdM sheer tint light pink
- Painted Polish mystery crelly vingt sept
- monarch skyfire (not in photo)

Products used:
Sally Hansen 7 in 1 base coat
Emily de Molly - such a farse x2
Essie - speed setter

fiction book to help me work through my relationship with my mom

I now live abroad from my family. My mom was quite overbearing growing up, and even though i’ve worked through my issues, I still find myself triggered when we speak on the phone. I am looking for a book centred on mother - daughter relationships that will help me work through these feelings and understand the relationship we have better.

Have you ever taken a few months off of work due to burnout? if so, what did you do?

The startup I worked at died, and now I'm left without a job. I am in a very fortunate position right now to have a good amount of savings, and a husband who works (and loves his job). I've been working non-stop for 10+ years since I graduated at 19, relocated countries across the continent twice on my own, and twice with my husband, with one coming up in November.

I am recovering now from burnout (from that job and life in general), and my husband and I agreed I could spend the next few months off of finding work in tech, to explore jobs outside the industry. I have been thinking of pivoting for a while now, but now that I have that freedom I'm suddenly frozen. I have all this extra time that I know I need to take to relax, but somehow I feel even more stressed.

I know I am incredibly privileged to be able to do this a few months. I also have been working non-stop since I graduated. It is so hard for me to relax, enjoy my hobbies and time off, without feeling like my life is going to fall apart. Does anyone have any advice on how I might start enjoying my time and feeling less guilty? I've been applying to part time jobs and executing the things I've set out so far on this break, but I just feel so all over the place!

edit: and any books you can recommend? feeling a bit lost in life

i would consider myself an adventurous / confident beginner, and have a few projects in my belt. i recently made a pattern with beautiful finishes from a japanese sewing book, and it’s inspired me to look for online classes that go into the technique, and that i can use as a base for sewing patterns that might not have great instructions. i’m looking to take:

1. how to make pants + trousers

2. how to make a button up shirt (jenna)

i am hoping to see any reviews for these two courses and whether they were comprehensive. for the trousers class, i plan to make the rika pattern (not the one demonstrated on the video but still a closet core pattern).

i’m a very learn-as-you-go type, and can google and figure things out. are these classes the right way to go or is there maybe a book that might be a better fit? the classes are 20% off now which is why i’m considering.
