Question: Screw Bees and House Torches

OK, so I have a question for some problems I am running into. Just hitting level 21, on my third "operations" mission from the Cont4act board to do some mining of a deep cave. Just unlocked Tier 3 tech tree but spending points in Tier 2 still.

  • Bees - From what I understand, they can only be affected by melee. But is there one weapon that works better than another? I would think something with flames would be helpful - but I can't wave a torch about and I don't think flame arrows will work. The problem I ran into is in this mission in a deep cave, they are coming in wave after wave at all different levels and they are coming from so high up that I really can't seem to get a swipe at them with my pickaxe until the last minute. I eventually had to retreat after the 3rd or 4th attack. There is an exposed honeycomb I see (although I expect there are others by number of bees), if I collect it and the accompanying queen will the swarm go away? OR anyone have a suggestion on best way to fight them?
  • Torches in a cabin - I have a floor torch and now have access to some wall torches. I don't have windows in my cabin yet because there is no way to close them in a storm (I don't think). So I rely on torch or fireplace light. But damn, I get a torch (Floor or otherwise) anywhere near a roof that is one wall high and I catch the cabin on fire. I thought this may have been specific to the floor torch, so I built a few wall torches thinking they were made for a cabin. It seemed to work the first few times but then I had the cabin catch on fire. (God bless water baloons). It's possible it was a lightening strike on the back of the cabin because I don't know the protective radius of the lightening rod, but I don't think so. Is there a safe way to light the cabin other than a floor torch in the middle of a two story room where it's in the way? Maybe wall torches but at hip level instead of head level? Any suggestions?

General Questions At Level 16

For context, I played the first two timed missions to learn the basics. Then switched to open world where I have a few hours under my belt, have watched my cabin and all my belongings burn to a crisp once (which I think is a right of passage), and I myself have literally caught on fire twice and had to dive into a lake. I'm on Olympus with a homebase in the bottom corner of L11 at the bottom of a lake with some rocky terrain directly behind me. I have a lot of the basics built and I am about 1/3 into the Tier 2 tech tree. I feel like I have a solid idea of gameplay and am in this routine of mining, hunting, and occasionally unlocking stuff but am starting to lose purpose and am getting a little bored. I like open gameplay but also like having a goal or two as well.

  • Am I supposed to branch out to multiple "bases" on the map? It's obvious I can travel a bit with bladders of water of water or oxygen. I can get a decent distance away north and south of me, but if I mine I get to my weight limit so quickly that I turn around and head back. With a map so large - am I supposed to spread out with multiple bases of operation with a lot of the same equipment each time (like a crafting bench, stone furnace, etc)?
  • Piggybacking off that first question, but I assume there is no fast travel equivalent to bounce to a distance place you have already discovered?
  • The tech tree seems to be almost too slow to unlock and I find myself often saying "what do I do now"? Unless I need food, I seem to be literally saying "well back to the mines again" just for experience. But even the metals I mine are not always useful. I do use iron, but copper and gold just sit.
  • I do have a CON4CT device which I thought would give me purpose and a goal to hit while I grind. But the missions seemed to be so far out in the tech tree for me that it's not obtainable in any near future (like 4 water troughs, etc). Is there another type of mission I should undertake or is it just luck of the draw? I hoped this would break up routine or boredom of grinding for the tech tree, but it looks I would have to do the same boredom/grinding to get to the tech tree to get what is being asked for the mission.
  • I did find one stone of exotics in a cave that I mined and sent up to the station. So I see how that works, but without an extractor this isn't really a early/mid game tasks or goal is it? If I find a stone, great, but otherwise I need to wait? Otherwise its a random search of caves for a 20% chance of a stone?
  • I know I can create a waypoint. But is there a way to make multiple permanent waypoints like "Base" or "Cave" or "Gyser" or some other point of interest so I can find it later on my own map instead of leaning on icaras intel?
  • I think I may have just barely enough Ren to buy a backpack. I assume that has to be purchased and is not available in the tech tree? I was going to build one but then I realized my problem isn't so much number of items but the weight. I assume the backpack doesn't help lighten weight to prevent being encumbered?

I know this was a lengthy post. I appreciate you taking the time to give some guidance.

Experience with a 2014 Wrangler? Gotchas?

I need some help/advice. I have a 2022 Jeep, but my daughter is about to buy her first car after working every summer for the past four years and scrimping/saving money for grades, birthdays, etc. We stumbled on something that may be too good to pass up.

I have a very unique opportunity to pick up a 2014 Jeep Wrangler, below Blue Book, with less than 25k miles. We discovered it after the Jeep was taken in by the dealership, given initial Ok, and before the overhaul that happens to the vehicle before it is released to the dealership lot. So it's about to get new tires, rotors, breaks, tune up ... basically anything wearable is replaced on top of general maintenance. When we saw it, it looked like a Jeep in very good condition just ... dirty, like it sat for a while. Even the softop looks relatively new and the caanvas in fantastic shape. No obvious leaks or pooling of liquid under the engine, transmission, etc. I have made arrangements to test drive it as soon as this maintenance overhaul is done and then the next day I am taking it to my mechanic for an independent review. Carfax is clean, one owner, showed 2-3 years of not being registered followed by being registered, given an oil change, and turned into the dealership. Our guess is this is a "cabin jeep" that may have been in probate when someone passed away. A Jeep that sat at a cabin or lake when the owner was at a second home or had retired.

Is there anything for this specific model and year that we need to look for when I test drive or anything specific I should direct the mechanic to double check? I've been warned to watch for a Oil Cooler leak, but that if it happened it would be obvious - it won't be a small leak. I see something about a Penstar tick in higher milage engines that I need to listen for. It didn't smell musty and has obviously been stored outside - but I think I have been seeing something about it leaking when it rains?

Anyone have any experience or insight with this model year specifically?

Novel sub-plot at Dragoncon.

(Side Note: I'm not affiliated with this author or publisher. Just a fan and thought it interesting, so I am passing this on).

So, last year, I sat in on a panel at Dragon Con that included author Mel Todd. Her premise of urban fantasy that doesn't include romance caught my attention and her 10k foot pitch of her series sounded interesting. It wasn't until a week ago that I picked up the first book of her "Twisted Luck" series and I am tearing through it now.

The setting is in Georgia and you can tell she knows the area because she writes about downtime like a local. But in Book 2, Hired Luck, she starts talking about "Dragon World Con". I thought it just funny when she mentioned it the first time. However, it turns out there was a main plot point around the con. Hearing her describe what the con was like from a first timer perspective, the things to do, and familiar locations was kind of cool. It was a few chapters of events happening in the con, not the whole novel, but it was fun to see.

So I thought I would mention it for others to check out. I also e-mailed her (and was surprised at a response). I discovered she will be at Dragoncon again this year for a few panels and at a booth in the vendor area (Bad Ash Publishing) if you want to support her.

A side note for male readers (coming from a 50yr old male perspective)...

When I saw the book cover, I stopped and double-checked I had the right series because I thought I had the wrong series. The cover's first impression was one of those young-adult, teen angst, romance triangle type of books. After double checking some of the reviews and my notes, I realized I had the right series and picked up the first book. It's target audience is definitely not aimed at any specific age or gender (and is LGBT friendly) even if the book cover initially comes off as girly teen angst. Later on, in an e-mail conversation with the author, I learned that was the popular style of art/covers for Urban fantasy (with a female protagonist) at the time of publishing and that you need to redo book covers every few years to stay with the times.

My disappointment is immeasurable ...

... and my day is ruined.

I'm about 40 hours into the game and I knew of these Message Modules, but didn't give it a second thought until I stumbled on one in the middle of nowhere on some random planet that said "Hello World". For some reason, that gave me an idea that made me giggle.

So I flew to another random, podunk location on a fairly decent planet. I decided to build a obvious place of worship, overdone with stone arches, various platforms, pretty lights. You know, somewhere worthy of the message ... "We have been trying to reach you about your car's extended warranty."

Only to find out it was too many characters! WTH!?! I was so amused and proud of myself only for it to fall flat. I stared in disbelief and then I got so angry that I tore it down.

I flew back to my base and made a small pedestal area nearby with a message module that says "All Hail Our Alien Overlords!". I'm still disappointed, it's not the same, but it will do.

Edit:

I will not be thwarted! You have inspired me. I will leave funny pun-like places of worship and spread the word of our overlords on random planets. Character limit is 30 characters. Leave me any ideas you may have.

To whomever named a named a planet Rick Astley …

… you are my hero. You may not be the hero we want, but the hero we need. <slow clap>

Apparently there are a few, because this had a number after it like Rick Astley IX.

Which weapons are these?

https://preview.redd.it/loovoix7cv4h1.jpg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d507dbfa109a5581a0e4296ef6ca4e8a74c49b45

Can anyone tell me which Gunner weapons these are? I'm guessing #2 is a grenade launcher and #3 is a flamer, but I would like that confirmed and have no idea what weapon #1 is.

Can anyone point me to what the hot-shot volley gun, plasma gun, and meltagun looks like? I want to see if I can Ebay the parts to build those alternate versions of the gunner. (If someone here has the sprues for those alternate builds as well, feel free to DM me).

Thanks in advance for the help.

Advice on Running Kasrkin

Kasrkin is my second Kill Team army and tonight will be my first time running it. When I was learning my first team (Nemesis Claw) I had asked for advice on this subreddit and got a lot of good feedback such as equipment to always bring, running in pairs using X/Y to support each other, your faction rule seems great but isn't often useful so don't force it, stay back and shoot your opponent from the shadows before coming in for a kill, etc.

So I wanted to ask if there was any advice you can give me for tonight? I mean anything from a tac op, to deployment, to a favorite combination, whatever.

If it matters, this should be a 3 player game on Volkus terrain. I believe my buddies are playing Mandrakes and Vespids, but one of those could be swapped out for an elite army at the last minute.

Hit me guys. What do I need to know?

Jeep as a first car .. question from a Dad.

I'm not trying to start trouble here, I really am looking for some feedback from people who have owned Jeeps longer than I, especially those in the 2015-2020ish range. I'm in a parenting dilemma and not sure the best way to guide (not tell) my daughter as she saves for her first car. Forgive the length of the post, but I need to give some context.

I own a 2022 Jeep Willys. It's my mid-life crisis car that I have wanted for 20 years but needed to wait until kids got older, current car kicked the bucket, and that I could financially afford one, etc. I purchased a 2yr old hardtop with 7k miles on it (in 2024) and love that thing. But I will never forget something a friend (who once had a Jeep) said to me as I was figuring out if it was the time to get one. He looked me dead in the eye and said "Jeeps are unreliable and unsafe, but damn they are a hell of a lot of fun. You work from home full time, this isn't a commuting car, and your kids are older - so, now would be the time I would get it". You know what, he is right on both counts. I've already had a clutch recall and an oil leak. I have random status lights pop up on my dashboard for 10 minutes and go away, but then everything checks out fine. However I love driving it and my 17yr old daughter loves the damn thing.

My daughter landed a good paying job for high school and has been saving 90% of her paycheck for 3 years. I'm betting she has close to $20k at the end of the summer which is when she wants to buy a car before her high school senior year. I will be able to help with another $5k or so (I am guessing). She is looking at finding a stock two door soft top Wrangler. I'm betting we can find a 2015-2020 with about 50k miles on it locally for that price.

Here is the conundrum ...

This will be a daily driver and need to get her to college and home (say 2-4 hour in state drive). I keep going back to the unreliability issue - is she just going to sink money into keeping it running as a daily driver and will it be reliable to get her around, for 4-5 years after purchase (say 60-80k more miles after purchase and hitting that 110-120k mile range by that point)? If she was broadsided (assume doors on) in a two door which we affectionately say "is the size of a roller skate" is the Jeep going to be totaled and will she be ok?

I will only guide her as she chooses and purchases a car. I couldn't tell her what to do if I wanted to anyway. But she will seriously consider and respect any feedback I would give her. So I am on the fence on if I should encourage her to lay out the negatives of a Jeep and lay out that she may want to consider another car for what she needs over the next few years.

Anyone have any general guidance on this? Anyone currently using a jeep as a daily driver as a college student? Anyone have experience with reliability or safety of a 2 door wrangler in that 2015-202 timeframe? I would rather have some facts and feedback from owners than hearsay if I provide some guidance for her.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Name of this cosmetic piece?

Help me keep my sanity. Imagine I am standing at the back of my hardtop 2022 Jeep Wrangler JL with the glass up and door open. On the left inside of the hardtop at about shoulder height is a plastic cover where my windshield wiper fluid tube (for the back) and some sort of power connection (maybe for the wiper) come out of. I have to unhook these connections to lift the hardtop off the jeep.

The plastic cover that covers the hole where the connections come out of lost tension in the tabs that hold the cover in the hole. I constantly have to pop it back in place otherwise I hear it knocking against the hardtop when I have any little bump (because it popped out of it's hole).

I want to go to MOPAR or Jeep to find a replacement piece but have no damn idea what to call the piece so I can look up a part number or know what to ask for. Does anyone have a clue of what it is called, or a part number, or a way to find that information?

If that piece keeps knocking, I may lose my mind.

Edit: Found it! Thanks for the response!

2022 Wrangler Break Squeak

I'm slowly going insane, so I am throwing a Hail Mary here to see if this is a Jeep thing I am not aware of. Back in 2024, I bought a very low milage 2022 Jeep Wrangler JL from Carvana. Took it to the mechanic the next day to get it checked out and everything passed.

From Day 1, I noticed the brakes squeak obnoxiously the first handful of stops almost like they need to warm up or something before they can stop without noise. I've had the brakes checked and cleaned twice with each mechanic not able to find a cause. I've heard it could be a hard spot in the pad itself or "breaks just do this sometimes". The problem happens after the Jeep has been sitting for a while - overnight in a covered garage or out in a parking lot for a few hours. My brakes have very little wear so there is no reason to replace them, Rotors and everything check out.

Anyone else have this problem? Is it just party of owning a Jeep? Or is there a known cause and resolution?

For context, I'm a relatively new player (maybe 6 mo) with 75% of my games on Volkus terrain and 25% on Tomb world. I also have a tendency to play 3 player more often than 2.

I've been experimenting by playing with different faction/standard equipment just to see how useful it is. However, I can't seem to find a use for Barricade and Razor Wire. They seem to not be useful. Does anyone use them regularly or have a rule of thumb of when they should be used?

Edit:

After posting, the question I reread the cards and I think I see the problem. I interpreted the deployment in all cases as in my deployment zone, not deployment territory (which spans out to about 1/2 the board, correct?). Still I think heavy barricades are only deployed in your drop zone, is there a use for that?

I wanted to pass this on to the community. I regularly play 3 players, and there are a couple suggested layouts (or rules of thumb) from the community for Volkus that we have used. But there was zero guidance on Tomb World, so we spent 30 minutes designing one last night. It has one test run with Nemesis Claw, Mandrake, and Angels of Death. But we all had an absolute blast and found it to be suprisingly balanced. Nemesis Claw (DZ 2) won because Mandrakes (DZ3) made an error clustering 3-4 mandrakes in a small room (neutral objective) and eating a Terrorchem Bomb from Nemesis Claw. Angels of Death (DZ1) got greedy and spread themselves thin trying to grab three objectives at once and got eaten up by Mandrakes and Nemesis Claw.

Just wrapped up my first KT build (Nemesis Claw) and am about to start my second with Karskin. I have a brand new box and all it's giant pile of unpainted plastic glory.

My question is should I be building out the box model for model on the back of the box? Essentially, one of every type? Or is there a case to forgo one gunner build to double up on another gunner build (for example).

Thanks in advance for your help.

I was wondering if any LitRPG authors (or narrators) were scheduled to go to Dragoncon this year? The LitRPG panel and other literary panels are usually really good.

At past Dragoncons, I know I have seen (or knew they attended):

  • u/InkslingerJames - James Hunter (Veridian Gate Online, Discount Dan)
  • u/hepafilter - Matt Dinnaman (DCC, Operation Bounce House)
  • u/kthanna - K.T. Hanna (Somnia Online series, Library Reset series)
  • u/RavensDagger - Ravensdagger (Dead Tired series)
  • u/SL_Rowland - S.L. Rowland (Pangea Online, Sentenced to Troll, Stripper at the Penis Parade)
  • u/fiatcelebrity - Jeff Hays (Narrator Extraordinaire)
  • Michael Chatfield (The Ten Realms, Restarting the Apocolypse) - Don't believe he has a reddit username that I can find.

I wanted to pimp a few of these authors to a couple friends that are going if the author will be on a panel (or there in general).
