After 2 months with the U400...

I replaced my six year old Yale August lock (YRD226 with the HomeKit module) for an Aqara U400. I upgraded my home network to eero (from Orbi) two weeks ago and the August Connect wouldn't reconnect despite multiple resets.

Choice... I looked at a couple options but picked the U400 for the additional features (fingerprint, HomeKey, UWB) along with having a physical key and the rechargeable battery. I have been extremely happy with the Aqara G5 Pro camera and thought I would try the smart lock.

Install Process... The lock installation process went extremely smoothly and took about 25 minutes. The physical installation went well with no problems. I did re-use the Yale strike plate rather than replacing it with the Aqara provided components. One nice thing is the U400 was just slightly larger physically than the Yale so it complete covered the original door paint and scuff marks that were under the Yale. Calibration worked fine with no issues or adjustments.

I followed the QR code instructions. I already had the Aqara app and account so that sped things up. The U400 battery needed to be charged (it was less than 40% out of the box). It added to my network and I added it to Matter as well. All without problems. Configuring the users is a little different than Yale/August but I was able to add my code, fingerprint and my iPhone unlocks with a tap. My wife was a little more difficult adding her fingerprint, but switch to her thumb and it worked fine. I have not tried the UWB "on approach" features yet. One nice feature is the Notifications for the door lock can be configured to show the video from the G5 Pro.

Two months later.... I am very happy with the U400 in my primarily HomeKit environment. It is easy to add codes and fingerprints. I added the "unlock on approach" about a week ago for my iPhone/Apple Watch both works as expected. I have not tried to add unlock on approach for my wife or anyone else.

We had a house sitter here for a few days and she used the fingerprint reader to let herself in. It was quick to setup and worked flawlessly each time she used the lock.

On the battery side, the device reports 87% remaining in the Aqara app and 90% in the Apple Home app (an odd discrepancy). I am impressed with the battery life after two months, appreciate the battery meter and won't need AA batteries for the Yale.

Overall, very happy with my choice so far. I'll be looking into the Aqara doorbells shortly to replace an old Nest Hello.

Even United has trouble getting compensation for their travel disruptions.

Despite my tongue in cheek title, this is an interesting story of how United manages its insurance with multiple providers and the challenges of getting a claim paid out. Similar to those of us who had a travel insurance claim denied due to some detail, but at a much larger scale.

Also, $20M of their losses went to customers impacted by the 2024 CrowdStrike outage:

>Around 200,000 passengers were left stranded as the airline raced to restore its IT systems, resulting in losses totalling nearly $114 million.

>United’s lawyers explain that around $20 million of the losses it incurred from the CrowdStrike outage was from paying out compensation to passengers – something that it claims was required under federal mandate.

Geico Auto 5-year Good Driver discount removed for all due to one driver?

We've had the "5-Year Good Driver" discount on all three drivers since we started with Geico. One of the drivers got a ticket with a point and all drivers lost the "Good Driver" discount.

Is this typical? Are their other insurance companies that would recognize the other two driver's driving record?

Aqara Home app crashes on macOS.

Previously it worked fine on my M1 Max, Sequoia 15.7.7 but with the latest app update via the Mac App Store, it crashes on launch.

While the header on the App Store states: "Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS", it has worked fine since I installed my cameras. Additionally, the "Compatibility" section of the App Store lists "macOS 12.0 or later and a Mac with Apple M1 chip or later".

Flight cancelled due to "Data Pack"?

TLDR; What is "Data Pack" and why would it cancel the flight?

EDI-ORD a few days ago we boarded an old school 757. Packed plane with Scots headed to the World Cup. Boarding paused due to "weight calculation" for about 10 minutes then continued. No big deal. But after about an hour on board with multiple yellow vested staff coming and going we were deplaned due to an issue with a "Data Pack" and rescheduled for 1pm. At 1pm the flight was cancelled.

To note, both the cabin crew and the EDI gate staff were great. The United Premiere desk was ultimately helpful getting us rebooked through LHR-IAD after dodging the various AI 'help' tools.

James might have to get some new equipment...

>Despite coffee’s popularity, there are no quantitative methods to measure a chemical property of a black coffee drink in situ and relate it to a flavor experience. Here we show that cyclic voltammetry can be used without any additional sample preparation to directly measure the strength of a coffee beverage and, separately, how dark the coffee has been roasted; these two properties are implicated in the sensory profile of the beverage. We show that the current passed for the cathodic features that precede hydrogen evolution are linearly related to beverage strength. The same features are suppressed with subsequent cycling due to coffee material accumulating on the electrode. The magnitude of suppression is directly related to roast color, which dictates the ensemble chemical composition and flavor of the beverage. Together, this voltammetric analysis decouples beverage strength from roast color and offers a strategy for rapidly assessing flavor-correlated chemical properties of coffee.
