PSA: clean your heatsink fins

My 2022 Legion 7 (3080 + Ryzen 9 5900HX) was getting scorching hot playing BF6 and throttling badly. CPU idling at 80C and instantly hitting 90C+ under load.

I repasted twice and thoroughly cleaned my fans. Nothing. I upped my RAM from 16 to 32GB. Nothing. I tried every possible setting combination for power, fans, and undervolting. Nothing!

Well, I tore it down one last time and blasted the shit out of the vapor chamber heatsink fins attached to the fan bodies with a fresh can of compressed air. I could see the dust shooting out of the fans.

Holy shit- temps are stable at no more than 75C under load playing BF6. No more throttling or FPS drops.

Sometimes it’s that simple!

How is the mortar fun or balanced?

I mostly play attack/defend and the mortar is just fucking miserable to deal with as an attacker. Literally every two seconds when trying to cap an objective its just BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM free fucking kills for ZERO skill or risk. Why the hell is this in the game?

New (to me) Auto 5

Completed transfer for my grandfather’s Browning Auto 5. Made in Belgium by FN. Will be a great gun for clays!

U-4501 is not fun to play against

This is my least favorite boat to play against. It is very difficult to accurately drop thanks to the crazy turning radius. It also seems to just shit out homing torps from both ends. It’s functionally impossible to 1v1 in a BB, and it can almost outrun some slow DDs while submerged. I don’t understand why it was added to the game

"Bad team / bad map, I'm suiciding"

I was just in a game on Okinawa and had a Scheer, three minutes into the game, announce "this map is terrible im suiciding, have fun."

I see this over and over again: F-tier players can't handle being down 2-3 ships, can't handle the pressure of having to actually try to carry a game, and proudly announce they're suiciding. Usually accompanied by "Omg no support!!! Useless team!!!! I quit!!"

This is completely antithetical to the spirit of a competitive PvP game. No fuckin shit you're going to get bad teams and bad games. That doesn't absolve you of responsibility to do everything you can to win. This playerbase are absolute children.

How crazy is this maintenance quote?

Got a quote for 150k mile maintenance items on my 2017 Off Road. I haven't had any of this done prior. The "coolant exchange" includes a new thermostat assembly and pressure cleaning. All in I'm at $3.3k parts and $4.2k labor

Subjectively, it seems that there's a few ships in randoms that always play like complete ass / get insta-deleted. Thinking of:

  • Seattle
  • Neptune
  • Azuma
  • Minnesota (it may not be physically possible to do well in this POS)
  • La Pampa (seems like a good torpboat on paper, but people never make it work)
  • Regolo (unicums always glaze it but I never see them do well)

What do you think?

New (to me) Marlin 60, made in 2006. No, it absolutely does not need a green dot, but I wanted to put together the easiest, most comfortable rifle for my fiancée to learn with at the range.

I paid $250 for the rifle from Cabela's + CA taxes and fees. The Romeo 5 Gen II green dot ran me $126 shipped from Sportsman's Warehouse. It included both a high and low mount; I used the low because high mount is just a bit too much with the traditional rifle stock.

Rail is the post-2005 DIP Marlin 60 rail, paid $39 which is a little steep but I wanted a purpose-made rail that I knew would work with the very thin dovetail machined into the receiver. It slid right on nice and snug but no filing or forcing required. Secures with six small drive screws.

Taking it to the range this weekend, hope it works well!

For those who own one or both ships, which do you think is more fun for randoms? I enjoy both gunboats and torpboats. I like Vampire II but it feels so squishy, so I'm interested by Druid's heal (I know it gets zero torps).

Chateau seems like a very strong torp boat, but does the conceal hold it back?
