CURRITUCK COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) — The Jeopardy champ and former YouTuber accused of installing cameras in a bathroom and bedroom of a Corolla beach rental home last October learned his sentence Monday after entering a plea agreement.

State prosecutors gave the summary of facts to the judge Monday morning. They said Currituck County deputies were called on Oct. 10 of last year. The victim told officers she was in Corolla for a wedding and found two cameras in the bedroom and bathroom of the rental home where she was staying. They were black USB wall chargers with cameras inside.

Detectives looked through the cameras, linking them to Philip DeSena, 44, who lives in Raleigh. He was charged in December with two counts of felony secret peeping. Attorneys said DeSena turned himself in after the warrant went out, admitted the allegations to police, stayed cooperative with officers and spent two nights in jail.

Desena entered a plea agreement in court Monday, and, as part of the deal, he does not have to register as a sex offender. DeSena completed a psycho-sexual evaluation five days before the court hearing. It concluded that he is at below-average risk to re-offend.

He was sentenced to five years of supervised probation and has been ordered to take part in regular mental health assessments.

His attorney, John Parker Jr, pointed out to the judge that DeSena is married and has two small children. Though he has a physics degree and a career in solar panels, he is currently a “full-time dad.”

DeSena told the court he is “deeply sorry,” that he recognizes “how much this affected certain people,” and does not expect forgiveness.

The victim politely declined our request for comment. She also did not speak in court.

In November 2024, DeSena competed on “Jeopardy,” winning two games and a $46,698 prize. He later appeared in the Champions Wildcard Tournament last January, finishing in the semifinals.

DeSena is also known on YouTube under the name “Roo” for the channel “ClanOfTheGrayWolf.” That channel was inactive for the last 10 years. It removed all of its videos sometime shortly after a court hearing for DeSena in late June.

A judge declined Monday to take the guilty plea of a man accused of installing cameras in a bathroom and bedroom of a Corolla beach rental home last October.

Philip DeSena, 44, appeared in person in a Currituck County courtroom Monday for a felony secret peeping case, as state prosecutors are accusing DeSena of installing cameras in a bathroom and bedroom of a beach rental home in Corolla on Oct. 10, 2025. He was arrested later that December. DeSena was released from jail on a $5,000 bond.

An indictment alleges he secretly planted the cameras for sexual gratification, listing the same victim under both charges. A grand jury later concluded the state has enough evidence to move forward with a potential trial.

Tax records show DeSena does not own the Corolla rental home listed in court documents. He lives in Raleigh. That beach rental home is within walking distance of the ocean, has six bedrooms, five bathrooms and a half bath.

At his court hearing on Monday, DeSena and his counsel told the judge he wants to plead guilty. Both the prosecution and defense attorneys quietly spoke with the judge for about five minutes. The judge did not take his guilty plea, instead moving this matter to a plea conference on July 27th.

10 On Your Side tried speaking with DeSena after the hearing. When asked for his side of the story, he told 10 On Your Side’s Nick Broadway: “I think it’s really kind of painful that you’re doing this, actually. … That’s it.”

DeSena did not answer any more questions on the way back to his vehicle.

Jeg bor omtrent så sentralt som det går an med adresse og tall synlig fra andre siden av gata, men likevel får jeg stadig melding om at de «ikke fant adressen». Det samme har skjedd tidligere somre. Pakker som angivelig ikke får plass i postkassen blir heller ikke levert – selv om pakken er på størrelse med et brev.

Endelig er det brustilbud igjen på Spar, har tidligere gjort store bestillinger men aldri fått mer enn 90 liter levert på døra, denne gangen skrev jeg i kommentar til sjåfør at han fint kunne dele opp leveringen over to dager.

Sjåføren ringte på døra her i sted og da jeg åpnet fant jeg 180 liter Cola Zero rett utenfor døra mi. Snakk om levering! 😄
