How can i switch from a lifelong rote learner/memorizer to a conceptual and active learner?
As far as I can remember, I have always done my learning through repeatedly memorizing for tests and have never actively engaged with my course material. I did this because I had a decent memory and found it easier and less time-consuming than actually learning things.
Every time, a few days before my test, I would sit with my course material, trying my absolute best to cram as much as possible, subsequently forgetting the material a few days after the test. I have always tried to fix this bad habit of mine but have found myself going back to my old methods because of laziness, not being used to it, and not knowing how to actually learn. But now, I think I am actually ready to change.
Can anyone suggest strategies, methods, or habits by which I can change my style of learning to learn, understand, and memorize better?
