Is FromJapan worse than other services (zenmarket, buyee) when it comes DDP options to the USA?

I used fromjapan a lot until de minimus went away. Well I’m getting back into buying watches direct from Japan, but I keep seeing horror stories of insane duty-brokerage charges. Do all shipping options on fromjapan have this issue? Would I get a different outcome if I switch to Zenmarket? Thank you!

Sharpen the nail file into a small knife?

Hello,

I am trying to make a dedicated whittling SAK that is as thin as possible. Tools that I need are small knife, big knife, and saw. Awl would be nice too.

I don't want to bother with putting together a custom set of tools, after researching it it sounds pretty difficult.

Instead I intend to use a Evo Junior 09 and sharpen the NAIL FILE into a blade! (also will reprofile the big blade)

Has anyone ever sharpened the nail file into a knife? Any reason it WOULDN'T work? I'm just assuming it's the same steel as the small blade, so should sharpen like normal?

Sorry if this question has already been asked -- I've googled this a bunch and have not found anything (though it's hard to search for, the results are all about using a nail file to sharpen a blade)

NH70 Outer Space mod w/magnetic nail polish dial 💅🧲

- NH70 “open heart” movement
- Spaceship case from AndoAndoando / SHM creations
- random nh70 28.5mm dial dial from aliexpress I stripped down to the brass and repainted
- hands are Breguet hands from Lucius Atelier
- Bracelet I got from Japan, not certain of manufacturer (maruman I think), seemed vintage. I would call it beads of rice-that’s-gone-a-bit-funky.

Dial paint is ILNP “Deep Space” nail polish, with a 2 long bar magnets positioned over the dial just after painting, then sealed with Krylon Crystal Clear. Lots of color shifting based off of angle.

Thank you for helping build my wristwatch!

I wanna give my thanks to the mad scientists in this sub.

I build watches and had a spaceshippy case, and waned a cosmic magnet-paint dial.

This sub was really helpful in figuring out how to do it.

To be honest I experimented a lot and was trying to get more of a velvet effect but just never managed to make it happen (perhaps a 5D spinner and some U-magnets would’ve done it?), so settled for something a bit more straightforward.

This was very time consuming, I cannot believe you all do this on 10 fingers with multiple layers. You are all badasses!

Thanks again!!

- 2x layer ILNP Deep space
- Magnetized via two bar magnets about half an inch above the dial, with the long narrow side facing down
- Top coat is 1x sally hansen red-bottle topcoat, then 2x layers of Krylon Crystal clear

Hodinkee SAK - Classic with a springbar tool for wristwatch straps

This is a Classic variant that was available on Hodinkee, a prominent online watch publication. It has a springbar tool for changing straps in place of the nail file. Figured I’d post as I had not seen it on this sub.

This is actually my first and currently only SAK, I carry it whenever I wear pants with the little fifth pocket. I’ve used the spring bar tool once in the last 6 months, but the knife and scissors sure have come in handy!

Currently making my way down the SAK-rabbit hole, I see how it can be addicting with all the variants and rarities, plus they are useful and also cheap. I have an Evo S101 in the mail, hoping that fits in the fifth pocket comfortably and maybe gets me into whittling? (We’ll see…I am a bit delusional when it comes to acquiring new hobbies)
