History of S Roxboro St (by MLK Jr Prkway / Hope Valley Farms)

It’s always perplexed me how S Roxboro is split into two major sections. Does anyone know why? There’s the section that runs from Hope Valley Farms, crosses MLK Jr. Parkway, and then abruptly ends where Durham County Board of Elections is currently located (used to be Kroger). Then, S. Roxboro picks up again at a portion of Archdale Dr. running north until it reaches just under 147 where it becomes N Roxboro.

Why is there a split in S Roxboro? What were the original plans?

What's so special about the Zima pod?

As my journey with aligners is towards the latter half of the treatment phase, I am contemplating getting an ultrasonic cleaner for my future retainers (never saw a need for them for aligners).

I know the Zima Pod ultrasonic cleaner comes highly recommended in this forum. However, is it really that much better when compared to a few other recommendations in a pinned post in this forum such as the:

I'm curious to know. I have read stories here about how some cheap ultrasonic cleaner can overheat and ruin the retainers, etc. I get that. I don't plan to buy some no-name cleaner, but what about cheaper versions like the iSonic? Does the Zima clean that much better? Or, is it designed so much better, and if so, how?

Ultrasonic cleaners

Are ultrasonic cleaning devices really necessary for retainers, or is getting them cleaned at the regular dentist twice a year enough?

How to clean Corningware plastic lid — it still feels greasy

I have a Corningware casserole dish that comes with a white plastic lid. In spite of cleaning it with dish soap and soaking in vinegar, the lid still feels greasy after it dries. How do I get rid of the oily feeling? The lid isn’t new; this thing is at least two decades old.

Vernacular for “Porcini”?

Is there a Cantonese vernacular for “porcini mushrooms”? I feel like this might be a relatively common mushroom (or at least not unheard of) used in some Cantonese cuisine, but I don’t know what the Cantonese name would be. Any ideas?

Carrots: gam1seon2

I was watching some old ATV cooking show (Mrs. Fang) on YouTube and she keeps saying gam1seon2 for carrots. I am a fluent heritage speaker and I have never heard of carrots hung4lo4baak6 referred to as gam1seon2 before. It's not wrong, but I wonder about the history of usage of gam1seon2 and whether its a more outdated terms in Cantonese now or perhaps it's more common in certain regional areas of Canton?

My macOS is out of date, says my Teams app

My personal computer (which I sometimes use for work at home) runs macOS 13.7.8, which is the latest macOS it can run. It's basically about 2 generations behind. The machine is from 2017. Anyhow, my Teams app keeps telling me to upgrade my macOS by July 20, 2026.

Does anyone know if the current Teams app version that I'm using (Version 26093.315.4664.9620) will not be able to access Team servers after July 20th?

What’s the weight of that pack? Knee extension machine — 30 minute circuit

This question is regarding the knee extension machine in the 30-minute circuit area. This machine has a weight that is normally locked at the top of the stack. When you want to add just a little more weight to the stack, you unhook and slide the weight down. I can’t tell how much this single sliding weight is. Is it 5 pounds or 10 pounds?

When did the terms CCon and Computer Cluster fall out of favor?

I only recently found out that I have an alumni account with CMU so I went snooping around official websites. (I graduated in the 90s!) Back in the day, we said "computer cluster" instead of "computer labs", and we would refer to the staff in charge of a computer cluster a "CCon", short for computer consultant. When did these terms fall out of favor?

Looking at current university literature, Computing Services refers to the labs as "computer labs". How boring and how unoriginal!

Download ClinCheck plan?

I think the answer is probably that there’s no way to download the ClinCheck plan for safekeeping, but I’ll ask anyways :) So, is there a way to download the plan so that even after treatment I can view the progress?

I used video screenshot to take an overview of my original ClinCheck plan. I’m now in the refinement stage and after the doctor shared the new plan with me, the original one went away from the Invisalign app.

Anyhow, I thought it would be neat to have access to the plan in later years just for my own record.

Where to buy powder laundry detergent? (physical store; not online)

This seems like a silly question to ask, but what stores sell a range of powdered laundry detergent? I’m looking for physical stores, preferably in Durham and Chapel Hill, and not online stores. It’s hard to find a good selection of powdered laundry detergent. At Harris Teeter, it looks like only Gain and Tide scent free are in powder form; everything else is liquid.

Some YouTube channels compare the effectiveness of laundry detergent, and many powdered ones rank high (e.g., Tide), but I don’t see any of these in the local stores I go to. Any suggestions?

No easy way to tell if message is encrypted, is there?

With the latest update to iOS 26.5, we are now told that RCS messages may be encrypted if the phone carrier supports it. However, there’s no easy way to tell if existing message threads are encrypted or not, is there? I have several message threads with people using Android phone, and sometimes I can tell whether the message is RCS or SMS, but not necessarily easily, and it’s not even easy to see whether the thread is encrypted.

How do we easily access these statuses for different existing (and long) threads?

Many decades ago, I was a work-study student at my undergraduate library working in the reference section. Among one of my duties was update what, if I recall correctly, our binder of Congressional Records on a regularly basis by filing the inserts in the appropriate binder. In that period, when people wanted to look up certain reference things, they had to do that physically or via CD-ROM. The internet was very young then. The CD-ROMs were basically electronic databases pointing out the various indexes of physical journals and things like that (if I recall).

This made me wonder: do academic libraries actually still have up-to-date physical reference sections of the library? So many things are now digitized, including old journals. And if academic libraries do have physical reference sections, what do they now house?

I recall too that phone books used to be something you'd find in a reference section. Now? I doubt it.
