Backpack Recommendations

Hey Peeps,

What waterproof backpacks do you all recommend? I need something that will keep books and other paper products safe from the rain. Thanks!

Doing Significantly Better

Hello All,

I have been doing significantly better recently and I attribute that to quitting smoking. I didn't stop nicotine alltogether, but I quit smoking and my meds have been working 10x better than before. I get up in the morning for work and I no longer work nights either.

I feel like things are looking up for me and it is my hope that they look up for you too. Ive come a long way from the overnight guy who screamed at himself at the deli cutting prepacked cold cuts.

I now work at a school for special needs kids and I pay it forward in the same type of way other types of services paid it forward to me. Here's to better things for everyone who is struggling!

Melancholy of Poor Service

Tagging this under "professional development" because I don't know what else to put this post under.

I work in the field and I'm transitioning to a school population working with kids with Autism. I love my work and I love the relationships I've been able to build. I admire the resilience of my clients in all the populations I've worked with and I love some of the people I've worked with including the wonderful people I've befriended from work.

There is, however, a lingering melancholy about my own services rendered that leaves me feeling sad. When I was young I had a mixed bag in receiving my own care. I resent to this day the people I've interacted with as a child and I hate the way people (including myself) get treated by our profession.

I resent both myself sometimes for working in the field as I think younger me would have hated me for being in non-profit considering how much I used to hate social service workers and teachers.

In some instances I feel as though I'm part of the problem. It's no secret that capitalism pits us all against each other. We routinely size ourselves up like meat for jobs and promotions and a lot of pur clients are two seconds away from becoming our peers.

I guess the main issue I'm having is I, don't know. I just don't know.

Confused and Pushing 30

Hello All,

As the post states, I'm pushing thirty. I don't see myself as particularly young and how my body looks I don't reflect that as I interact with other people.

Recently, I successfully deferred my college enrollment for the fall of 27 to adjust work and personal obligations to suit my educational pursuits to focus on my studies.

I don't have much in the way of hobbies as I work 7 days a week between 2 jobs. I work in the nonprofit sector and I balance two jobs and responsibilities to my exhaustion. I'm getting by day to day like a lot of people, if not most people nowadays.

For school, I want to study English Education. I've always enjoyed reading and since I got my Concerta script I can lock in on books that I enjoy without it being like a chore. I'm happy about this as I can finally do things without having to smoke cigarettes every 30 minutes.

Since I've approached 30 I've changed my music tastes toward Jazz and Electronic music like House. Friday I'm going to a Jazz event in my city to get a break. I'm also switching jobs in August to work at a school for Autistic kids, so, a new challenge basically that I'm excited about.

All in all, I feel confused. I don't feel like at the moment I'm where I want to be and I see the problem as I'm down on myself and stuck. I talk about this in therapy a lot. The shrink has been helpful and I want to get over this feeling of angst. I'm not a teen anymore so I feel the clock is ticking and I'm running out of time. *sigh*.

If you read this long, thank you. I'm hoping to gain some perspective on my issues and any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

ADHD and Bored at Work

Hello All,

I've been working in social services at a non profit for approximately 3 years and I love the field. The only problem is the job I have is insufferably boring.

I work at the security desk of a shelter and all I do is sit there all day and maybe bullshit with the clients.

The chatting with clients is not a problem but sitting at a desk where my coworkers are sleeping and I have the zoomies from being bored all shift is torture for both me and my coworkers.

To start with, they like to sleep and I like to smoke when I'm bored. So while they're trying to rest I'm fighting the urge to smoke every other hour while they're coming back from second jobs and sleeping on the clock.

Believe it or not 90+ percent of what I do involves sitting there and doing nothing and I still fuck that up.

I need a career change at this point or at least a change of jobs in my field because I can't sit down and watch people sleep all day. Thanks for reading me vent.

Reading Words Wrong on occasion and being an Avod Reader

Hello All,

I figured I'd ask some teachers this question as this is a habit I've had for some time.

I read fast and I comprehend well what I read when I read in my head. However, I notice that I misread and mispronounced or use a different word altogether when I read in either Spanish or English.

This happened at church today where I was reading scripture on the pulpit at daily mass and I misread 2 words from the book of Mark as I read aloud to my church congregation.

I chalk this up to my head generally moving fast or maybe impatience.

Why do you all think this happens? Do you have students that do this too?

[NY] Hypomania at work

Hello All,

I live with Bipolar Depression and I recently experienced hypomania at work. I won't get into too many details, however, it involved me talking to myself aggressively.

I have documented my disability with a doctor's note with accommodations and I'm curious what I should do. I fear termination and I'm unsure of what my colleagues would do or what HR would do in lieu of this should they find out.

Please advise me of what to do going forward. Much appreciated.
