Is being a picky eater satire?

As a food addict, I could never relate to people around me saying they’re picky eaters. What does that even mean?

I realised I was different from others when living with a roommate. She wasn’t really a picky eater, but did have foods she didn’t enjoy. She was really specific about her food and preferred things to be done a certain way. When we bought new treats to try, she would sometimes rate them poorly, which felt strabge to me, because essentially everything with sugar tastes amazing. This friend of mine also disliked some of the healthier things I was buying: greek yogurt, lower fat products etc, whereas it didn’t really matter to me if my meals tasted amazing or not. Keep in mind that she is a very mentally stable person and eats with no restrictions and is skinny.

So…a picky eater is just someone with a healthy relationship with food?

It certainly isn’t about the food

I just binged on the most disgusting concoction. Mind you, this was on top of other things, but I made a mug cake (classic), but I had to use a light margarine because I didn’t have butter and I also replaced white sugar with brown. It was lumpy and tasted awful. It’s not about the food.

Binging when sick

So many people say that their appetite decreases when sick. However, as someone with food addiction and a BED, being sick is one of the biggest triggers. I feel Ill so I search for the easiest comfort I know: food. I eat all day and even night if I can’t sleep. Last night I baked because I was bored and told myself I’ll freeze most of it, well guess what happened. Does anyone else struggle with this and how do you deal with it?

Identity crisis

Due to my weight fluctuating A LOT, I have no idea what I look like anymore. I just saw a friend for the first time in 6 months and they commented on my body saying ”I didn’t remember you were that small, you must have gotten skinnier”. Yes, probably (not sure how tho, just had eaten a loaf of bread and a stick of butter the other day), but I just brushed it off without saying much. I guess they meant it as a compliment but it actually triggered the shi out of me.

However, it really got me thinking that I have no idea what I look like anymore. I feel like my body changes so much, even weekly, that it’s hard to recognise myself. And it also has a lot to do with identity because I hadn’t realised I had lost weight since I felt like I was binging more than normal. Well, obviously it doesn’t say much about one’s weight because it can be combined with restriction. I just feel like I put so much of my identity into how my body looks that I have no idea who I am anymore.

Baking…

Any baking enthusiasts in here? If you are one, how do you not end up eating the whole batch? Obviously it’s easy if it’s being shared with family or friends but what abt when you just bake alone?

I love baking and live alone, however, I cannot stop eating the whole batch. Today I baked these amazing choc chip cookies because I’m having the flu and really bored. At first, I just ate a couple and froze the rest, but then at night I caved in and had the whole lot.

I’m at a point in my recovery where normal everyday foods don’t trigger me anymore, such as bread, granola, cheese, etc. I know some people aren’t triggered by these in the first place but that’s where I’m at. But the treats are where it goes downhill. I don’t want to restrict them entirely though and have found that for example, buying a single cinnamon roll and having that has worked fine. I would just love to be able to have treats in the house and feel like a normal human.

Addicted to fats

On top of struggling with BED I happen to be addicted to the most calorie dense nutrient: fat. I can have a jar of peanut butter in a sitting, I love butter, avocados, chocolate.

5 blocks of chocolate

Anyone else heard of the 5 blocks of chocolate method. In short, it’s when you make sure to have 5 blocks of chocolate in your cupboard at all times to make the food seem less exciting. I tried it a few months ago, BIG NO. Didn’t have money to replace the chocolate bars anymore

Peanut butter

For the first time literally ever, I was able to bring peanut butter to the house without going NUTS. I did have a couple spoonfulls, just because it felt new and exciting, but then I realised that it will be here tomorrow and I could have it with something yummy when I feel like it!

Intuitive eating with company

I feel like intuitive eating is way easier when I’m with trusted friends. For example, if I were to eat alone I’d eat a lot more and not feel as full as I do when I’m eating with a close friend. Today we had pizza for lunch with a friend and I was content with just one piece.

I wonder if there’s an explanation for this. Do I feel more safe when eating with a friend? Do I eat slower? Do I follow others’ eating patterns? And how can I eat in the same manner when I’m alone as I eat with friends??

Canned chicken is superior

I think canned chicken is way better than buying raw chicken and cooking it or getting pre-cooked rotisserie chicken. Canned chicken lasts basically forever, takes no effort to prepare, and tastes amazing and juicy!

Lazy meal hack!!

Feel free to share your lazy meal hacks here, I’ll go first: canned chicken strir fry

- canned chicken
- frozen stir fry veggies (I also added some spinach)
- whatever seasoning or low calorie sauce you prefer
Throw the veggies on a pan with some olive oil, once cooked, add the chicken and spices. Took about 10 minutes to make!

I ended up getting 2 big plates of food for 365 calories and 40 grams of protein

Binge habits?

What is your craziest binge habit? I’m talking a pattern regarding binge eating that you repeat often.

For me, the triple chocolate overdose. I used to binge on a jar of nutella consistently. My nearest grocery shop is about 200 meters away. The habit was, I used to walk to the store and pick up 1 jar of nutella along with 2 100 gram chocolate bars. I would eat the other bar on the way back, place the nutella jar in the freezer (tastes amazing), and eat the other chocolate bar while I was waiting for the nutella to get cold, and then finish the whole thing.

Only being intuitive in the morning

Why do I feel like I can only listen to my hunger and fullness ques in the morning? Does anyone else struggle with this when starting intuitive eating? I feel like once I start eating I get more food thoughts and it gets messed with my actual hunger cues.

The unforbidden open bag

Most of us probably relate to not being able to put a food packet down before it’s completely destroyed. If I open a bag of chips, you best believe I’m finishing it.

Unfortunately, this goes way beyond ”binge” foods for me. I feel like I have to finish everything I open; yogurt tubs, bags of bread, turkey slices, anything really. This makes it really hard for me to keep food in the house. I only eat whole foods now so I have to actually prepare what I’m eating (this hasn’t stopped me from binging them though).

Do you struggle with this and how do you deal with it?

Addicted to being stuffed

I don’t know why but I only feel safe when I am so full it hurts. I love the feeling in my stomach when I literally cannot fit any more. When restricting I try to get the same sensation by binging on veggies. Will I ever be okay with feeling neutral/hungry?

Are you also overseasoning your food?

I’ve noticed that i overseason my food really heavily, especially with salt. I literally put it in everything, and even have it by itself. I’m wondering if this is linked to binge eating or dopamine induced eating.

Don’t experiment with keto

I’ve been trying out keto in order to

  1. Prevent sugar crashes
  2. Clear out my skin
  3. Control food noise

You could probably guess what happened….
I binged on a ton of butter.

To be fair, I actually felt quite good on this diet. However, I’m experiencing a lot of stress, and instead of doing the stressfull things, I tend to eat to suppress the negative emotions. Probably going for a walk now.

The only positive is that I don’t PHYSICALLY feel bad at all. No excessive bloating or fatigue.
