JLPT N4 Registration Issue (India) – Slots full even though site says open on the 26th?

Hey everyone,

I’m based in India and trying to register for the JLPT N4 exam. According to the official JLPT India website, registration for N4 was scheduled to open on the 26th. However, when I try to apply now, there are no options/slots showing up for N4 at all.

I emailed the organizers, and they replied saying that all N4 slots are already full. I'm really confused because the website explicitly gave a later date for N4 openings.

Has anyone else in India faced this issue for December registrations? Is it possible that slots opened early without notice, or could this be a technical glitch on the portal? Any advice on what I should do next would be greatly appreciated!

Confused about JLPT requirement for Master's in Art History (MEXT vs. Todai/Kyodai entry requirements)

Hi everyone, I'm sravani from India

I recently graduated with my Master's degree (May 2026) and I am planning to apply for a Master's/Research program in Art History in Japan for 2027, targeting universities in Tokyo and Kyoto (such as University of Tokyo and Kyoto University).

I am currently studying for JLPT N5/N4, but I am confused about the actual language requirements:

  • The MEXT Scholarship guidelines state that Japanese language proficiency is not strictly required to apply (or that English proficiency / prep school is sufficient).
  • However, when checking the specific Graduate School / Department of Art History websites for universities like Todai and Kyodai, they list a minimum requirement of JLPT N2.

For those who have successfully applied for text-heavy humanities (like Art History or Literature) via MEXT:

  1. Does department-level JLPT N2 requirement override the general MEXT guidelines when seeking a Letter of Acceptance?
  2. Is it realistic to apply while currently at N5/N4 level, or should I wait until I pass N2 before applying to these specific departments?
  3. Are there any English-taught Art History Master's programs in Japan, or is JLPT N2/N1 practically essential across all major universities for this field?

Any advice or experiences from current MEXT scholars in humanities would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Watch out for creeps in your DMs / Reddit Chat

Hey everyone, just wanted to put out a warning. A day after posting here looking for IELTS advice, I got a chat request. I accepted it thinking they were going to offer some tips or resources. Instead, they literally just sent me an unsolicited dick pic.

Just be careful who you accept requests from if you're posting here for help. im unable to post the image of his reddit account but his ID is prasadarsh 2614 and his dp his someone looking like a Harry potter professor Severus Snape

Planning to study in Japan—can I skip the JLPT N5 and go straight to N4?

Hi everyone, I am planning to move to Japan for higher studies in the next year.

Right now, I'm trying to map out my language goals. Is it compulsory to take the JLPT exams sequentially (N5, then N4, then N3, etc.), or is it okay to skip N5 and go straight for the N4 exam? I'd love to know if anyone else has done this or if language schools/universities require you to show certificates for every single level.

MVA Art History graduate from India looking to do a second Master's in Japan (No Japanese language skills yet)—is it possible?

Hi everyone,

I’m from India and recently completed my Master of Visual Arts (MVA) in Art History and Visual Studies from Hyderabad Central University. I am really keen on pursuing a second Master's degree in Art History in Japan.

Here is my situation:

  • Funding: I didn't apply for the MEXT scholarship, but I am only looking to go if I can secure a scholarship (university-recommended, private, etc.). I am currently working with an educational consultancy in Hyderabad to start the process.
  • Language: I do not know Japanese yet.

My main question is: Given the language barrier, will Japanese universities or professors accept a research proposal in Art History? Are there English-taught Art History programs that offer good scholarship opportunities, or is Japanese mandatory for this field?

Would love to hear from anyone who has navigated the humanities/art history space in Japan as an international student or anyone who went through university-recommended scholarship routes. Thanks!

Hi everyone! I’m Sravani from India. I’m currently pursuing my MVA (Masters in Visual Arts) in Art History in Hyderabad.

I’m really interested in moving to Japan for a second Master's or a specialized program, but I’ve noticed most Japanese universities require a highly detailed, formal Research Plan just to apply.

Are there any universities in Japan—specifically for Art History, Curation, or Cultural Studies

Any leads on universities or specific scholarships for Indian students would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
