Purchased a $140 USD (14000 INR) chromebook

Immediately put linux on it after delivery

I miss Windows XP so I themed it

Works fine for daily web browsing (limited to 3-4 tabs max), watching movies and usual word and excel stuffs

Plays retro games fine, should run DOOM and Quake fine

I am looking at this beauty everyday

(Lenovo 100e Chromebook running Linux Mint XFCE with Windows XP theme and cherry picked backgrounds)

This cheap but beautiful looking chromebook was literally calling me in my sleep, so I bought it brand new for around USD 140. But I never bought it for its OS. Chrome OS is fine for people who are okay with it. Personally, I wanted to make it much more “personal”.

Before placing the order, I read forums and reddit subs to gather info on putting linux on chromebooks. Turns out, it has been a mixed bag of experience for users. Apparently you have to buy an x86 machine for much better compatibility than ARM, there is write protection in weird shapes and sizes across boards, and to add cherry to the top of the cake, these 11 inch cutie pies mostly come with emmc chips and not SSD-s 🫠..

Anyways, big thanks to MrChromebox and their well documented tutorials and tools available on the web, I decided to rip open my brand new chromebook within hours of delivery with plan of putting linux in it. While the write protection removal process gave me some trouble (had to do the jumper method with two iron nails for my unit), it was not really rocket science. And of course, I put Mint on it but with xfce because I love it! Although I had never tried xfce before this and have Cinammon Mint on my other system at home, I found xfce to be not much different from cinnamon, while being little bit less resource hungry.

Now, the chromebook sure looks weirdly different than other black and gray ones. That was part of the reason I was interested in this unit (plus it was the cheapest brand new one). And the color scheme reminded me of a long lost OS which was my first introduction to PC- Windows XP. Hence saw some tutorials on YouTube and placed some themes.

And here it is, my EDC (every day carry) cheap 4gb ram and 64gb emmc mintbook, which is gonna serve me as I learn basic terminal shenanigans (linux noob here) and watch movies and browse web on it (trying not to stay glued to smartphones). No sound or smell of AI anywhere in this OS, just as I like it. 💙

I thank almighty and those awesome people for whom Linux exists. In a subscription preferring society and AI driven corporate world, it’s almost magical!

Purchased on 18 April 2026. Absolutely no issue, no damage, no dent, no scratch. Screen guard applied and will include two extra new screen guards.

If you want to experience Windows 11 with a Fanless ARM processor and tablet form factor, this is the best option in this size and package.

Bought it for using as personal laptop. Runs older AAA games perfectly fine and other office softwares and browsers too, thanks to Snapdragon X Plus chip. Selling because my priorities have changed and no longer finding any use case scenario for this device.

No surface pen nor keyboard came with box.

Left joystick was not behaving like it should i.e my characters in game wouldn’t run even if pushed to maximum tilt. Read some posts on reddit and gathered courage to open up my Win Mini 2024 and replace the left stock joystick with a brand new gulikit TMR (switch) analog stick. Fits perfectly and loving the replaceable cap! Kept the right stick untouched because I have no issue there. Tested with all my games and characters ran fine like they should! Time to fresh install Windows 11 and set it up as a new device. Fresh install of Windows was absolutely not necessary but fell in love with
the device again so a fresh start wouldn’t hurt! ☺️

Honestly love the fact that the hardware is repairable and GPD made it easy to replace the joysticks! Cheers!

Thanks to u/KevFernandes , my EDC wallet (CT Pocket small 420D) is here in my hands. Build quality is great, space is enough for 4-5 cards (and any card sized gadget/toy/tool) and bunch of cash with some coins. Feels super comfy both in formal pants and in jeans. Not sure about the fit in skinny jeans pockets or shorts pockets as I refuse to wear skinny jeans and I am too shy to go out in shorts. But this wallet seems to be the endgame wallet for me. Although would have loved the orange version of this but due to some miscommunication I received the black one. All I can say is, the black color looks stealthy and I'm happy with it. Huge shoutout to u/KevFernandes for help with the group buy/import and reasonable price.
