A follow up about edm kick drums

After a post I made last week, I’ve decided that it would be quicker in the long run to work with samples, instead of making them in the kick plugin.

I’ve gotten ahold of some samples and I notice they’re coming in super hot. Like 0db pre-fader. I’ve never worked with samples before and am just looking for some basic tips.

My intuition says to gain stage them back down to leave headroom for everything else and then basically not touch it after that, save for some minor eq’ing and transient shaping

Also, because it’s processed, I’m assuming a kick sample would stay by itself, rather than go into a bus with the rest of the kit?

But I’d still like to hear everyone’s basic workflow when using pre-processed kicks in their songs. Thanks

Edm kicks are actually difficult!

Not new to music production. For many years I’ve done rock, funk etc. I’ve never really had problems with my kicks. You just need a punchy thump and it doesn’t have to be the center of attention.

However when making an edm song and comparing it to a reference track, I find that my kick is missing “knock” and volume. The volume I think I can manage, but how do I get more knock?

Add another layer? Different sample? On a track I’m working on, there’s a single kick, made from spire. I got it thumping just right and feels right in terms of the sound and thump, but I just can’t figure out that synthetic click / knock sound.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Update about the sold JM on reverb.

He’s requesting a full refund. Says he took it to a guitar shop and they were going to charge $75 just to take it apart / lift the pickgaurd off (???), plus the charges of whatever else it needed.

I’ve never had to perform a refund on reverb. I just want to see if I’m at risk for any kind of a scam before I accept the refund. If you’re not familiar with this post, I made a post last night on this sub

Sold a jm on reverb. When I sent it, it was 100% working just fine…

Both pickuos. Rhythm circuits. Everything was fine. I wasn’t sure if he was new to JM’s so I explained that it’s probably in the rhythm circuit with the volume and tone knobs down. I gave him a qrd on how the guitar works. He says he’s tried every possible configuration of knobs and switches, but he’s not getting anything. Says his other guitars are playing fine.

Any idea what could possibly be going on? Reverb already takes a disgusting fee as is and I’m not going to keep the guys money if it really truly isn’t working. I hate to ask him to send it back.

What could have possibly happened in shipping, that he’s not getting any sound? I hate to ask him to unscrew the guard and take a look at everything. After all, he did spend $900 and I want him to be happy. By the way, I’m an individual, not a store. Any ideas??

About panic attacks and breathing

In case anyone is unclear about the importance of breath work during panic attacks, I have a moment of free time and I wanted to take a few moments and share what I’ve learned over the years and after HUNDREDS of 10/10 panic attacks.

You’re minding your business. Everything is fine. You’re doing the dishes or laundry or something and BAM, all the sudden you are full speed ahead in a full blown panic attack.

What just happened, is for whatever reason, your brain decided to blast you with stress hormones.

Adrenaline: your heart is beating out of your chest and your chest feels tight

Noradrenaline: you feel a rush if hyper vigilance. You’re aware of every single sensation that is happening in your body. You can hear noises from across the street. Your peripheral vision becomes blurred, but the cone of vision in front of you seems magnified and extremely detailed.

Cortisol: you have rush of uncontrollable energy and jitters. You’re shaking. It feels like your entire body is vibrating.

Histamine: you notice that you’re completely stuffy all of the sudden. Your throat is tight. You notice that your breathing feels a little weezy. You feel like you’re breathing through a straw.

All these stress hormones hit your blood stream and you’re off to the races. In an instant you’re either saying out loud or thinking “omg omg omg omg, I’m dying this is it, this is the one, omg omg omg”

Your body as a natural machine (meaning completely out of your control), just went into fight or flight and your mind is unraveling. You’ve lost complete control.

Your first step is to understand that whether this is an emergency or just anxiety, it’s not going to do you any good to be out of control, since you might need to call an ambulance or drive yourself to the hospital. At this stage, it’s best to understand that either way, you need to get your breathing under control because you need the ability to talk.

When you hyperventilate, your limbs become tingly and numb. When you experience this sensation, you go to an even more terrifying state of panic.

The solution is actually simple. Slow your breathing down. I used to get so confused about breathing. How long am I supposed to inhale? Why do these instructions say to put my hand on my stomach? Why am I trying to feel my stomach rise? Why do these instructions say to hold my breath in between inhaling and exhaling?

Forget all of those complications and just make your exhale longer than your inhale. If you can, breath in for 4 seconds and breath out for 8 seconds. If you’re too panicky and can’t do that, then count to 2 then to 4.

Over the course of a minute, you’ll have spent a significant more amount of time exhaling (WHICH SLOWS your heart rate, than inhaling (WHICH SPEEDS your heart rate.

And by the way, that doesn’t mean to breathe in as much as you possibly can in two seconds. It means to take a controlled and slow inhale for two seconds and then a slow and controlled exhale for four seconds

When you get your heart rate under control through breathing, your brain will signal to your body that the situation is under control and your body will stop producing those hormones which caused you to go into a panic in the first place

So no, breathing does not magically get rid of panic attacks. What breathing does, is make your panic attacks shorter, by getting your body back to a normal state sooner

I have to get back to work now. There’s a lot more I wanted to say. But that’s the basic gist of it. Get your mind under control by not saying omg omg omg, but instead by counting your breathing. That should be your number one focus. Make your exhales as twice as long as your inhales, or even longer if you can stand it, and your heart rate will come down. When your heart rate comes down, your body will stop blasting your bloodstream with stress hormones and the panic attack will end sooner

Good luck

When do the big bucks start rolling in?

Last year when I quit, I had several million solari and never touched the auctions once.

This time around, I’ve taken a few more flights than last time and have made about 5 claim extenders, but besides that, nothing has changed and I’m sitting at about 60k

I just made my base up north in the aluminum area and am about to start knocking out the story mode.

To be fair, I had way more knowledge about the game this time around and have skipped most of the camps (not the intel sights), but those are only around 150-300 solari

I guess I don’t remember, but when does the big money start coming in?

Question about buying / saving bases

When I played last year, I moved into a huge guild compound. I logged back on a week or so ago and started a new guy. So I’ve never made any kind of base beyond little starter bases down in vermilius

Anyway, I see these huge compounds that are built into rocks with all kinds of overhangs etc.

If you buy or move a base, but the geography is different, how is it possible to transfer one of these huge bases? Do you guys know what I’m trying to ask?

Sorry, another FabFilter post

Big fabfilter sale going on. I don’t need more plugins, but I DO enjoy tinkering and experimenting and I have a bday coming up. I like mixing and learning probably even more than playing instruments these days. Making and mixing music is really my only hobbies.

We all know how great ProQ4 is, so excluding that one, which are your favorites and why? Which do you find the most fun to dig in with and experiment? Which plugins once you properly learned them, did you never look back to others for?

Reveal sound (spire)website down?

Apologies for the off topic question, but I know alot of people use spire here. I got a new setup the other day and am in the process of reinstalling everything. Google says the website is working fine, but I’ve tried from a Mac, pc, phone and with several different browsers, but I can’t get on. It’s been this way for the last 4 days for me.

Is anyone else having this problem? Does anyone know what’s going on?

I go to the page and this is all it says:

“Use Spire synthesizer plugin to access AI sound generator.”

About DLC

Just got back to the game and was looking over the dlc. If there’s no price attached, like with the sardukar outfit or the wildlife, does that mean the content is not available for download at all, whether it’s paid or free?

When I bought the game last year, I bought just the basic version of that helps

Still no shadow priest utility

Just learned about SP’s voidform updates for s2. Yea still not coming back. Sp’s haven’t asked for damage buffs. We want utility and mobility.

I played some sp in s1 and despite our cc and utility losses, I was sitting in just as much if not more cc than ever. I don’t care how tanky sp is or how much damage they give it, I’m not coming back until it looks fun to play.

Respond if you like; but this post serves as a message to blizzard that Sp’s are still waiting for modernization

I’m not sure where else to ask this question about FabFilter pricing

I noticed that a plugin sales site is having a bundle sale on fabfilter. Seeing this, it reminded me to check in on my own FF account to compare the discount.

FF is offering me their L2 for $109. I swear that the L2, even with my discount was always around $170 or so. Am I imagining things or was the L2 always around $110? The only plugin I have from them
Is the pro q4.

I’m thinking that I should jump on that price, but I guess there’s no necessary rush if it’s always discounted to that amount.

Does this mean the contract is already moving faster than last time?

From Google:

The contract formally expired at midnight on May 22, 2026. Because the NALC Executive Council rejected the Postal Service's counter-proposals, Renfroe announced that the two sides have officially reached an impasse. The contract dispute is currently moving into a legally mandated 60-day mediation period, after which it will head to a binding interest arbitration process chaired by arbitrator Dennis R. Nolan if no agreement is met

Carriers deciding who takes what OT?

Been on my new route at a new station for about 6 weeks and I’ve noticed they handle OT a bit differently here from what I’ve experienced in the past.

Here, the manager or sups will tell you how much overtime and on what route, but the person casing it, actually assigns you your section of that route. Well it goes without saying that a lot of people are feeling abused and taken advantage of, while the ones casing it and supposedly getting the easier sections all the time say it’s fine.

I’m pretty quiet at the station and don’t get involved, but I am curious if this process is within the contract? I don’t know everyone and all their backstories, but after a conversation I had today, I can see how this could be abused and how management could be showing favoritism by having the same people case everyday and letting *them* choose how to hand out the splits.

So what’s the scoop on this situation? Is this okay? Should management be the ones to decide? Carriers?

New to working with samples

New to edm and have never used samples before. Any tips on how to work with samples that are already eq’d, compressed, limited etc?

With kicks for example, they’re coming in already mastered at -.1. If I turn them down to match my mix, then later throw them in a glue bus, plus further processing during mastering, won’t those kicks lose punch and character?

Just looking for any and all tips when it comes to working with pre mixed and mastered samples. Thank you

Topper pack recommendations?

Long time bedroom musician, but new to house / deep house production. I’ve noticed all of the Apple loops that come stock are either completely dry or they have a bunch of conga’s and other things going on that I don’t really want.

In other words, I would like to get my hands on some more toppers that were made specifically for chill, deep house, but I would also like to hear how they come produced/ wet in the packs so I can get a better idea of how to mix the raw ones

Since I’ve been listening to a lot of EDM lately, all of my feeds are nothing but sound packs etc.. I really don’t mind spending 30 or $40 at all and was hoping maybe you guys could direct me to either a solid pack or a solid source for some chill ambient deep house kind of toppers please. Thank you

I’ve looked at splice in the past for other things, but it’s just not my thing

Raw gristle at noodle company

I was lured in by their $10 lunch special. Ordered the spicy Korean beef. The dish had 4 little slivers of “protein” and all 4 pieces weren’t even meat. Just gristle. I wasn’t able to chew and digest any of the 4 little slivers. The dish was barely above room temperature. Their soda machine was broken.

The staff was nice and the place was clean. The Parmesan broccoli was hot and tasty.

Won’t ever go back though

Early - Mid 2000’s edm genres?

A very close friend of mine (now deceased) used to play all kinds of dance music. I guess it’s called edm now. He played all the poplular ones that everybody knew (the music sounds better with you)

But when we weren’t drinking and partying, he often played this kind of low-key more chill kind of music. The best way I can describe it, was it was more simple. Dark. Echoey / reverby. The Rhythm had a fair amount of complexity to it and if there were any drops in those songs, they certainly weren’t the super epic explosive buildups like you hear in modern edm. Simple darkish bass lines.

I’d like to rediscover this particular genre of dance music just to vibe out with. Does my description ring a bell with anyone?

Edit: as a complete sidenote, he used to listen to this weekly radio mix out of the UK with some famous dj. I don’t remember the dj’s name and the music from that radio mix was definitely standard house. So even though that’s not what I’m looking for, that time period is what I’m looking for, if that time period helps. Thanks again.

Edit #2: based on some feedback, I’m almost positive that the genre is *Deep House*. The time period I’m looking for is about late 90’s-2010 or so.

Thank you everyone so much!

A common thing that happens is say there’s a team fight at waterworks. I’m an sp, so I pump all my damage, fear and silences into a healer, but one, their health bar doesn’t move and two, there’s another healer, healing that healer.

I’m over 2300 mmr now and it’s become impossible to kill a healer. I’m not new to bg’s, but I’m brand new to bgb and not sure if what I’ve been doing is correct.

So really I’m just looking for any tips for team fights in general and obviously any tips specifically for sp. thanks
