Looking for Players for the Board Game "Diplomacy"

Greetings aficionados of negotiations, tactics, and backstabbery,

I am looking for 7 players in the RVA area who want to play the board game Diplomacy! This game is not for the faint of heart - if played to full completion, it takes roughly 6 hours, and it is full of treachery and deception. I would describe it as a cross between "Risk" and "Survivor" - half tactics, half negotiations and alliance formation. I am a long-time online player, and Diplomacy remains my favorite board game, although I have yet to play in person.

Because of how long it takes to play, this will be an all-day event on a weekend. If we have eight people including myself, then I will moderate the game instead of playing, but I will fill in as one of the players if necessary.

A brief description of the game - Diplomacy is set in early 1900s Europe with seven world powers: England, France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Russia, and Turkey. The game is split into two phases: the diplomatic phase and the orders phase, which happen one after another until the game ends. During the diplomatic phase, which lasts 15 minutes, players discuss privately with each other and form alliances and make promises to others about how they will command their units. During the orders phase, everyone sits at the game board and writes down, secretly, what moves they are going to make with their units. All negotiations are non-binding, so a player can make a promise to an ally during negotiations and then do something completely different when it comes time to write their orders. All players move simultaneously - moves are written down secretly during the orders phase and all are revealed all at once and resolved on the game board. Alliances are known to form and break and reform - "backstabs" frequently occur where someone who you thought was your ally writes orders to attack you. The game can end in two ways - a "solo" or a "draw". A solo happens when one player controls more than half the board and wins. A draw occurs when all players who have not been eliminated agree to tie the game, with fewer players in the draw being a better outcome for those remaining.

The rules can be found here, if you want to know more details: https://diplom.org/~diparch/resources/rulebooks/2000AH4th.pdf .

This is a game that you might not want to play with your friends or loved ones, so I recommend not bringing anyone else unless you have a rock-solid relationship. This game is known to ruin friendships because of the treachery involved.

The venue is to-be-determined. I belong to a local makerspace, so we will likely play there. I cannot host at my apartment because it is too small - if you have a larger area with multiple rooms that you'd be able to host in, you will receive priority. The exact date is also to-be-determined but will occur on a weekend and begin in the morning. You will likely be eliminated before the game ends and can choose to leave at that point, but you can stick around to see what transpires as long as you don't interfere.

There will be prizes for the winners. I'm thinking of something like a pot of candy split between however many players are in the draw at the end of the game (or the whole thing to a player who solos).

Once we have agreed upon a time to play that works for everyone, please be ready to honor your commitment and stick around for the whole thing, because it is no fun when a player has to leave prematurely. That being said, if something comes up I might be able to fill in for someone, and barring that there are options for how to continue when a player has to leave mid-game.

I don't expect this post to gain a lot of traction, but if it does I will select people based on how good a fit I think they are for this game. I won't just choose extroverts! I'm an introvert myself. I want a diverse group of people, in terms of personality. So please message me or comment with some info about yourself, as well as your availability in the coming weekends. But I will waitlist anyone who wants to join. Priority will be given to anyone who has played the game before or could host.

I'm looking forward to meeting you, and remember to watch your back!

Anything Wrong with my Schematic?

I am building a crystal radio that is currently not working. I am testing it by applying a 5 mV, 200 kHz, 200 Hz - AM wave from a wave generator to where the antenna is supposed to be connected (and to ground). Here is my schematic, borrowed from a couple different websites - I'd like to know if there's anything obviously wrong with it before I test things further. Thanks!

Looking for More People for my Philosophy Book Club

Hi all,

I began a book club a few months back, and I'm looking for anyone else who wants to join! Right now, we are focusing on two books - "The Last Days of Socrates", a collection of four Platonic dialogues, and "Clara", a lesser-known philosophical novel by Schelling.

"The Last Days of Socrates" are Plato's accounts which follow the end of Socrates' life, from the trial to his execution. Contained within are discussions about piety, wisdom, justice, the transmigration of the soul, and countless other themes. This book is being currently read without set deadlines - most people are on the second dialogue*, Apology*, right now, so if you want a casual, slower reading pace then this book might be for you!

"Clara: Or on Nature's Connection to the Spirit World" is a philosophical novel by Romantic author Friedrich Schelling. I don't know much about this book - I am keeping it fairly blind for myself - but some themes in this work are philosophy of nature, "animal magnetism", and the progression of nature toward self-consciousness. I have been told that it is like "Hegel before Hegel". This book will have more of a set schedule with fixed deadlines, and the current plan is to start reading it on Monday. But if you join later than Monday it should be easy to catch up.

Discussions are held via Discord - this is so that we can have asynchronous text-based discussions (not everyone needs to be there at the same time), though we might have live discussions in the future. Future books will be nominated and voted on, so you get to have a say in what the group reads.

The vibe of the server is serious but casual. Reading books is not a requirement to join - you can come just for friendly philosophical discussion / banter!

If you are interested, send me a DM and I will give you a Discord invite!

Let's Read "The Last Days of Socrates" Together

Greetings beings of the world of perception,

I am putting together an elite team of thinkers (you guys) to tackle some of the greatest works of philosophy. This month, our book club voted to read The Last Days of Socrates, which is a collection of four Platonic dialogues - Euthyphro, Apology, Crito, and Phaedo. These dialogues track Socrates' final days leading up to his execution. In these works are discussed piety, democracy, justice, and immortality among many other themes.

Reading of Euthyphro begins on Monday, but if you're a little late to the party it's totally fine. We will read one dialogue per week for the next month, followed potentially by a brief writing session. Discussions will be held via Discord, which is asynchronous so that we can keep a written record and not everyone needs to be on at the same time to discuss. But we may have live discussions in the future.

The vibe of the server is serious but casual. We have miscellaneous philosophical discussions when not engaged in reading. And any level of skill with reading philosophy is ok - no experience is required!

Texts are chosen via vote, so once this book is done we will nominate and vote for future readings.

Hope to see you there! Send me a DM for access to the server.

Philosophy Book Club

Greetings beings of the sublunary realm,

I am putting together an elite team of thinkers (you guys) to tackle some of the greatest works of writing. Do you find yourself wondering about the meaning of life, or the definition of right and wrong, or the foundations of logic? Do you like having deep discussions for their own sake? Do you want to become a master of argument? Then this Discord server is for you!

We are a new group of readers for whom no book is too daunting. Our first book is scheduled to start Monday - it is called "The Last Days of Socrates", and it is a collection of four Platonic dialogues - Euthyphro, Apology, Crito, and Phaedo. These dialogues track the end of Socrates' life - respectively, before the trial, the trial, the imprisonment, and the execution. In them are discussed themes of piety, democracy, justice, and immortality of the soul. As far as philosophy goes, these are fairly introductory texts. No experience required!

We will start reading Euthyphro on Monday and read and discuss one dialogue per week. After we finish, we might have a brief writing session before moving onto the next work. Future works will be chosen via discussion and vote. Discussions will be held via Discord, of course, so that our discussions are asynchronous (we don't need to be all present at once). But we can also have live discussions on the server if we decide to.

This is a serious but casual server run somewhat democratically. Your voice will be heard if you want things done a certain way. We also have off-topic philosophical discussions, of course, just for fun.

Here is a link to the server: https://discord.gg/QqkcqnNJnq . Join and we can move this reading group from potentiality to actuality!

Let's Read "The Last Days of Socrates" Together

Our book club voted to go with The Last Days of Socrates, which is a collection of Platonic dialogues - specifically Euthyphro, Apology, Crito, and Phaedo. That is - right before Socrates' trial, the trial, during the imprisonment, and the execution. Hence Socrates' last days. In it will be discussions of piety, democracy, justice, and the afterlife, among other things.

Reading starts Monday (before that if you want to read the introduction), and we will read one dialogue per week for the next four weeks. After that we were talking about having a brief writing session before moving on to another book.

If you want to read Plato's philosophical biography of one of the most influential thinkers of ancient times, then this book is for you!

Discussions will be held via Discord - this is so that we can have asynchronous discussions, so that we don't have to get everyone on at the same time. DM me for access to the server!

That's about it!

I made a Discord Server for a Mental Health Support Group

Hey - 27M - and I'm feeling pretty good today. I have on/off low-grade depression - something like cyclothymia - and right now I'm in a good mood and have a clear head. But I know it won't last forever. I know that at any moment I will be unable to do much of anything besides stay in bed, play poker, and feel awful. Medication has helped me marginally and therapy not at all.

So! For this brief window that I have a little electricity in me, I want to bring together an elite team of mental health fighters (you guys) because I don't want it to be like this for me forever, and I'm sure you guys don't either. With some of the brightest minds of this generation (you guys, lol) there is surely nothing we can't do.

A little about this group and why I'm creating it. The servers I've found so far are generally based on venting emotion. Not that there's anything wrong with that! There is a venting channel on my server. But I want my server to be more solutions-focused. Like - I want to know what works for you, what doesn't work for you, how your day is going, and what you're accomplishing and why. I'm a bit of a scientist at heart. I like getting stuff done. Of course, this isn't a substitute for actual mental health treatment.

This will primarily be for mood disorders, but anyone can join. Bonus points if you have experience helping others with mental health related problems.

Prerequisites to join are a desire to get better and a bit of maturity.

18 and older please!

Here's a link to the server - hop on and introduce yourself if you are interested! https://discord.gg/hVmsxzXhgf

Richmond, VA - Winged Ant or Termite?

My roommate and I disagree on what this is. They've been all around the apartment, but especially in his room. An insect identifier app says it's a termite. The first image has better quality I think.

Let me know if you need a better pic than this, we should be able to get one soon.

I'd like multiple opinions if possible, just to confirm.

Starting a Book Club - Round 2

Greetings again - beings - of the - sublunary - realm,

Reading Aristotle's Physics turned out to be a flop. Perhaps the book required too much from the reader. But! I don't want to give up on running a book club. I think the idea has a lot of potential - maybe it just involves toning back the difficulty.

So! Here's how it's gonna work. I'm gonna spend about a week gathering an elite team of philosophers (you guys), and we will nominate potential philosophy books to read. Then we will vote which one gets read. We will chop the book up into pieces (read a certain amount per week), and we will read at a fast-but-not-too-fast pace to give us the best chance of finishing in a timely manner, and so that we don't get bogged down in understanding every detail.

Discussions will be held on the same Discord server as the Physics was, so you get to see the ruins of our former reading. Discord is good because it allows us to discuss asynchronously, so that we can have a written record of the discussion and not everyone needs to be online at once to discuss. But we will also have live meetings via voice chat if the weather permits.

Send me a DM if you're interested and I will give you access to the server! Bring an idea for a book you've been dying to read, and maybe it will get chosen.

I feel "spiritually weird" about looking for partners. Do you feel this way too? Maybe we will connect then.

We are judgmental creatures. When trying to engage with new friends, dating partners, etc., we filter people based on a laundry list of criteria, some of which are quite shallow and some of which are not. We pick and choose people based on attractiveness, age, career, interests, income, personality features (emotional stability, gregariousness, kindness), athleticism, intelligence... You get the point. We look at people as though they are commodities on a market, and we try to weed out the defects and get the best person we possibly can so that when we go home we will be confident that we made the right choice. And then we find no one, or someone if we're lucky, and leave the rest by the wayside to fend for themselves.

I want none of that.

I'm sick of how we treat each other like this, as though they are objects for our gratification. I don't want an attractive partner. I don't want someone without defects. Hell, I don't even want someone remotely put together. I want you. I want to know what your soul looks like. I want to know what God thought about when he created you.

That's why, for a limited-time offer, I am dropping all my criteria. All of them. If you respond to me, I am going to try my absolute best to make our friendship / relationship / alliance against the world / whatever work out. I don't expect the same from you. It's a tall order. You can be as choosy with me as you want. Just know that if you send me a message, I care about you by default. I want what's best for you.

Hell, even reply to me if you're not a woman. I said I'd drop all criteria - I'll even drop the gender criteria. Obviously if I get a million replies I will have to leave some people, but I suspect I will only get a few at most, so I plan to get everything I possibly can out of those few connections.

Greetings beings of the sublunary realm! I am currently reading Aristotle's Physics - I am partway through Book I - and it has been quite a challenge. Therefore, I want to start a study group for the intellectual support as well as the increased motivation. This book is not for the faint of heart! While it is certainly not the most difficult philosophy text out there, it is probably the most difficult book I've tried to take seriously. While the writing style is inviting, the ancient terminology can be very hard to interpret. The ancients thought about things very, very differently than we do.

Aristotle's Metaphysics refers to three realms - the world of mathematics, the realm of the heavens, and the physical world on Earth. It is this third realm that the Physics is about. While the world of the heavens refers to objects which do not move or change, the Earth is arguably more complex - objects come into being and pass away, they move, and they take on and lose properties. This world of change is the Physics' subject matter.

Here are some details about the study group:

- We will hold discussions via Discord, both chat-based discussions, as well as live discussions if people are interested

- You don't need the same translation as me - the one I am using is the 2018 translation by C.D.C. Reeve - but I have found the translator's footnotes to be not just useful but essential

- There is an introduction and 8 Books (labelled I - VIII). I plan on keeping a pace of 1 Book per week (Books are like 20 pages). Read, enjoy, and grasp as much as you can in a week. Then we will be finished in 2 months. It is fine if you don't grasp everything (unless you're a super genius or a philosophy PhD, you will not grasp everything). If this turns out to be too ambitious a pace, we can slow down to 1 Book every 2 weeks.

- We will start reading in about a week maybe when people have had time to join

This is a serious book, but is supposed to be an easygoing group where perfection is not expected. I myself am a beginner. Join if you are interested, and we will move this study group from potentiality to actuality!
