Rambling about Steve Lacy

If you were to ask me which artist could have the biggest impact on the 20s, it might be Steve Lacy.

When I first heard his song “bad habits” I couldn’t believe a song like this by a black artist would be this mainstream. Songs like this are usually flash in the pan TikTok songs or something you’d find on Bandcamp not top 20 radio. Then he made sunshine no one listened to it and he basically disappeared. For about 4 years I’ve been waiting for another black alt rock (or even rock) artist to hit the mainstream, but it hasn’t really happened. I thought he’d be a game changer but outside Leon Thomas and The paradox it really hasn’t happened.

He released a song called Nice Shoes , which basically felt like a “I don’t care about mainstream fame” type song (which after the TikTok stuff) I don’t blame him. Although his new song the feeling has got quite big recently kinda hoping that changes the tide for black alt rock artists

This to me is like what hearing neon trees “animal” was in his 2010 best video

Excusing someone’s awful behavior because they had a rough day is a terrible excuse

When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time - Maya Angelou

Honestly I feel like excusing someone’s awful behavior “because they were having a bad day or something was going on in their life” is an awful excuse. It’s true we never know what someone’s going through but it doesn’t excuse the behavior. Not necessarily saying you should hold a grudge or not forgive them but what someone’s going through doesn’t immediately spare them from accountability.

Songs that sound great in a certain context but you’d never seek them out or ones you appreciated more hearing after hearing it in a certain context

Two for one

Songs that sound great in basically one context only but they don’t sound very good on its own (I’ll even count in the context of an album). Ive never cared for Raise your glass and firework but they sound great during Karaoke or when you’re at a party. Also I only like Milkshake by Kelis when it’s in Mean Girls.

On the other hand I was indifferent to blinding lights by The Weeknd until I heard it in the gym (great song for a gym playlist). Also here with me by marshmallow grew on me a lot for…. Reasons.

Dark comedy from the year 2000 about a recently deceased woman no one liked

I heard about this movie in a thread and I’ve been meaning to watch it (it was free on YouTube but I’m not sure if it is now).

I barely know anything about it except it came out in 2000, it was pg-13, and it was a dark comedy and people remembering a dead woman no one liked. I thought the concept was so interesting but I honestly couldn’t even tell you an actor in the film

Edit: it’s drowning Mona. Thanks

Please don’t take your kids to see the new minions movie

I’m not usually the one to warn about listening to certain kinds of music or watching movies, that’s based on your own convictions. I wouldn’t generally recommend kids watch r rated movies but I usually don’t protest against a film.

I was excited about the new minions film as I liked the last few. I was honestly interested in the new one until the new film showed the minions perform a ritual and summon a literal demon. I couldn’t believe how overt it was. Usually films have subliminal message or hint at dark things but this was some of the most overtly dark things I’ve seen in a kids film. So much of modern Hollywood is normalizing darkness through the music industry, movie industry, and even video games (I remembered a season of Fortnite that encouraged to sell their souls for items).

Is reborn confirmed for the Rebel Ragers tour?

I checked a recent set list saw that he ended with that one and I’m going to the Raleigh show. For those who have been, did he do the song Reborn? It’s one of my all time favorite songs and Kid Cudi’s lyrics hit hard at points when I needed them the most.
