What makes a tree monitor more difficult to care for than other monitors?

Is it mostly just the size and cost of the enclosure?

Are the more sensitive to heat and humidity shifts?

Is it harder to balance their diets with different types of bugs?

I’m not looking at getting one anytime soon, but they are some of the coolest lizards I’ve ever seen and always see people say “just get an ackie or Kimberly rock monitor”. Why?

Do you have any personal experience that informed your answer?

________ better _______ next chapter or __________

Seriously. Arlo just learned how to cut off Orin with his barrier, if he’s out of commission or just doesn’t do it next chapter, it’ll really downplay Arlo a lot. He’s had his barrier broken before and he might need a bit to recover, but they have a healer. If it’s just a set up for “true love’s kiss” breaking the spell, well, there would have been a better time for that or just not having Arlo there

Just picked up some dwarf whites. Should I just put them on the bottom of the terrarium or should I put some wherever there is a soil patch for plants up the wall?

The enclosure is put together and planted! Soon the main attraction will be ready to play

From a $100 ikea cabinet to a planted and ready to grow terrarium for a bunch of tiny lesbian lizards!

The bottom layer I have 2 Begonia Rex varieties (lower one is Huge McLauchin the other one is Silver star)

Transendecia (Wandering Jew) for the middle layers I just spread those around in piles of dirt and moss. It was $5 for the 3 so I was willing to put them in less than ideal locations that I thought would look good dropping from.

Dendrobium Nora Takunaga is the big green one right under the top cork bridge. Apparently the flower lasts a long time and I like the shape of it without the flower anyway

Dendrobium Lodigessi are a bunch of trimming scattered around the top to form a canopy of Lush green vines. This one will never flower because I can’t give it a winter chill and not kill everything else

I’m thinking of getting a PC fan or try to adjust my misting so I can get the lower levels to 70% and the upper levels to 50% humidity. I’ll try doing once a day misting for a bit and see how that goes while keeping the basking spot at 29C.

Another thing I was thinking was instead of having the extremes at the top and bottom (29-21C/85-70F), put a heat pad at the bottom and lower the basking spot to 26/80 degrees. I know everyone says to have a temperature gradient, but I don’t know if it’s better to not have the extreme ends of their temperature tolerance in the thank

I think I’ll let this chill for a month and establish itself before adding in any geckos. Well……. At least that’s the plan 😅

I’m unsure if I should add the leaf litter and my clean up crew now or do it at the same time as the geckos

This is taking way longer than I predicted but I’ve finally got moss in my first tank ever! Next up is plants

So far I have to say that using flex seal was not worth it, I still had to silicone everything and the flex seal took 2 weeks to off gas.

Spray foam SUUUUCKS to apply when the unit is vertical (the grouted foam board took a lot of time but at least it kept its shape and silicone was enough to hold it up while drying)

I used WAAAAAY MORE silicone than I thought I would, one bottle by itself went straight to making a seal for the door

I set up 3 places for plastic bottle cap spots for feeding dishes

I have 4 hydro/thermometers

I also have a 50W halogen UV bulb for the basking spot up top. The unit came with a 75W and it has a dimmer, but I’m just going to test the 50W to see how it goes.

I’m planning on wandering Jew for the canopy, 1 begonia (planning on gathering some more) for the mid level. But I’m not sure what to put for the floor cover because it’s kinda dark down there even with 4 grow lights. My original plan was nerve plant, but I’m not sure.

If you have any plant recommendations please let me know!

What would you use to make a gasket here?

The hinges and top/bottom caps make it so that the original weather stripping (that white stuff) would be good in some spots and too tight in others.

Right now I have applied and dried dish soap to the case (not the door) and was going to apply black silicone to the door and just close it and wait to dry.

Would my plan work? Is there a better way? The gap ranges between 1/8-1/16” depending on what’s in the way

I will be keeping mourning geckos so I really want to make sure the gaps are filled properly.

This is my first build so any help would be appreciated! This is taking much longer than I had originally anticipated

Luck bamboo or other woody plants in a 5’ tall terrarium?

I did a water holding test on my modified ikea cabinet terrarium, after 48 hours not one drop of water came out of the base.

I’m still working on sealing the front door so I don’t get any escapees, but I’m doing some searching for what plants I can put in to fill this tank up

So far I’m thinking:

Nerve plant for ground cover

Begonias for a splash of colour and planting up the walls/hardscape

Jade pothos for vines and general fullness

Maybe orchids for extra colour but they might be too difficult to grow form what I’ve heard

———————-

What I’m looking for now is something that can provide some “woodiness” or tree like structure besides the cork I’ve got.

Would lucky bamboo or something else work well or would it get outcompeted by everything else in the tank?

How can I tell if some old wood I have is safe to use?

I have some old walking sticks (keep sakes from hikes) that are quite old and I want to use the wood for a terrarium. Is there a way to tell if it’s a safe wood before I cut it up and put it in the oven?

So I have some space that would fit this great. Is there any reason not to use this as an enclosure base and bring it up to snuff?

I’m looking at getting some geckos and livening up my space a bit. I’ve never kept reptiles before (fish yes, but no land animals besides dogs) but if I went around, sealed the gaps, used the shelves to make the opening smaller when the door opens, just generally trying to escape proof it. Is there any reason not to use this as an enclosure? Would there be anything toxic to worry about?

This is why constant antagonism doesn’t help. If this is what people think, being a dick will just reinforce their negative opinions

Some of what he says has a sliver of truth (historically land reform did include the end of private farming, and sometimes there was crazy ideas like killing sparrows, dogs and cats)

But we need to be able to talk reasonably to reasonable people, and by reasonable I mean just propagandized people

In your brand of leftism, how do you view home ownership? What do you view as something you could realistically get passed in our system?

Just to clarify the title post:

Home ownership is defined here as - the exclusive right to your residence. This could be a single apartment, a single dwelling, or a parcel of land where you have some exclusive rights over.

___________

Realistically - if you held a majority government and able to drum up support among the electorate. No constitutional changes.

___________

“Realistically” I think a ban on corporate ownership of residential dwellings could be passed. A cap of 3 residential units per person. I think 3 is large enough that you could easily convince most people that that’s enough without having one person owning entire towers (that would be collective ownership by the residents) while still leaving room for some temporary housing for people who are moving around and ownership would be unfeasible.

I think it would be difficult to get support for this, but having 100% public shorelines. No private ownership

If a person’s yard is blocking the way to a public area, they must provide a path, if there is no path then they can cross wherever.

__________

Assuming we can do massive land reform. One person/family (I don’t know what age is ready, but 10 year olds don’t get their own house lol), one dwelling. Land is no longer a commodity, you can move, but you neither buy nor sell land. If more than one person wants a plot, preference is given based on need (a family would have priority in a unit with multiple rooms, those that work in the area have priority over those who work further away).

If a project that benefits the community needs the area where you currently reside, you will be guaranteed the opportunity to relocate to a location that fits your needs and have moving assistance

If you have pet allergies there will be designated buildings with no cats/dogs allowed, otherwise pets are allowed by default (my selfish pick because I like dogs and right now it’s hard to rent with a pet)

If you plant a garden/farm or build a shop in non reserved land (ex: designated park area, shared community space) then you can use that land/structure exclusively, if you are in an area surrounded by land that is not actively being used, you do not have rights over it and is by default free for public use

There is more to add and discuss here, but those are some things I think would be great

Edit: Come at it hard! Discussions and debate about something other than “how bad is ______” can be fun even if it doesn’t generate as much karma as a meme 😂

Why did Americans let the Epstine Files end as just another thing in the pile?

How is it that people aren’t marching in the streets knowing that the government and so many powerful people are sex trafficking little girls?

Do people think that the files are fake? Do they not want the full release?

Does anyone know of any hunting clubs in southwestern BC that aren’t conservative?

This isn’t some sort of mission or policy driven post, I just want to find a group of people who want to get together and hunt and teach people who are trying to get into it. I just don’t want to have to listen to crazy stuff like “Mark Carney trained Justin Trudeau and that’s why gas went up” while trying to enjoy the outdoors

I have my CORE but no PAL, I might get it later but for now I’m just practicing with a bow. I’m not sure if that makes a huge difference.

Also a reminder that Marx said “Under no pretext should arms and ammunition be surrendered; any attempt to disarm the workers must be frustrated, by force if necessary.”

Hunting is not anti leftist, it’s just a way to enjoy the outdoors and get high quality meat that wasn’t raised on a factory farm

Karma bots have killed this sub, mods please help

U/not_ground is like half the posts here and they are so low quality that it makes this whole sub look like a random collection of memes and screenshots

These bots don’t encourage discussion and when they take up the page it makes it look like there’s no discussions taking place here which makes people less likely to try and have any sort of conversations.

I don’t agree with everything here, no one will agree with everything. I’m not asking for some sort of crazy litmus test like they have in r/conservative, but please just end these shitty spam bots

Update: they banned me, which fair enough, I am trying to stop them from making money off of selling a high karma Reddit account. If anyone sees their posts next week, keep on ‘em

If you had to rank colonization tactics of of the new world from worst to best, how would you rank them and why?

I’ve always viewed Latin America as some sort of alternate version of Anglo America but with more “fun” (I say this looking at carnival and semana santa and realizing that the Brit’s didn’t exactly leave us with any celebrations. We have holidays, yes, but it’s not like a big party or anything like that) colonizers. Maybe more brutal in some ways (apparently slaves would get sent south for misbehaving because they were more brutal to them), and less in others (the English part of North America basically had an extermination philosophy with the natives)

What are your guys’ thoughts on the difference between the big 3? Maybe even the little ones if anyone knows anything about the Dutch or how French Guiana is doing
