Public comment to reduce menhaden overfishing

Public comment to reduce menhaden overfishing

For people who have been concerned about the overfishing of menhaden in the Chesapeake Bay and all the dead osprey: the public comment period to try to change the laws regarding commercial fishing in the bay and maximum allowable catches, goes til 11:59 tonight, October 9.

Link to the survey https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/6M9XTRT

I found the wording of the questions in the survey to be almost impossible to understand as a layperson, probably by design, to discourage regular people from participating in the survey, but I used the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s recommendations for answers to be helpful (I quoted them below)

“3.1 Chesapeake Bay Reduction Fishery
Cap Amount: Support option C1e that would reduce the Bay Cap by 50 percent and limits it to 13.6 percent of the Coastwide Catch Limit (TAC). Also, support option C2a which sets an upper limit of 51,000mt for the Bay Cap, which is the current level.
• 3.2 Chesapeake Bay Cap Distribution:
Support option B2 which establishes three even length quota periods for the Bay Cap, but distributes harvest 25 percent in period 1, 25 percent in period 2, and 50 percent into period 3.
Also, support option B which establishes quota period overage payback and rollover of unused quota within a fishing year.
• 3.3 Chesapeake Bay Reduction Fishery
Cap Revisit Provision: Support option B
Revisit Provision to reassess the efficacy of these new management tools every 3 years.”

Hopefully this will help 😔

Seeking info about a small dog hit by a car around St Paul and North Ave this evening

A small dog owned by an unhoused person was hit by a car this evening near Station North. I heard about the incident second-hand but I heard that the person declined seeking care, possibly due to financial limitations. If anyone knows how to get in contact with this person, I wanted to say that I work at an animal hospital and can get the dog care at no cost if they reach out to me. I can transport them as well. My heart is broken thinking about what they’re going through tonight. If anyone knows anything about this person or how to reach them, please DM me.

Advice needed for re-upholstering this chair

I got a pair of these chairs from a family member, I think they’re a reproduction from the 1980’s, but I’m not sure.

I found a website called Loome in the UK that supplies a similar Josef Hoffmann pattern in a woven fabric, it seems nice quality (I would hope so, at that price). Link

Should I buy this fabric? Is this doable for me as a first time DIYer with no tools or workshop at home? Help? Thanks in advance ♥️

Scabies?

These extremely itchy welts just appeared on both my feet last night. I had gone for a hike in a wildlife center earlier that day and did use a DEET bug spray but had low socks and was not wearing pants.

I have received treatment for suspect scabies in 2024, I didn’t get a definitive diagnosis, the doctor just listened to my symptoms (it was an evisit through Kaiser) and prescribed permethrin. It somewhat seemed to resolve, but I would occasionally have itchy welts on occasion.

I contacted a doctor through Kaiser again today and shared this picture, and they said that they consulted with a dermatologist, and they both agree these bites are more consistent with bed bugs than scabies. They refused to rx permethrin and recommended a topical steroid.

I’m just not sure what to do at this point. I really don’t think it’s bed bugs. I stripped my bed and couch and saw no evidence of bed bugs. I hate that the doctors aren’t listening to me, I feel like I’m going a bit crazy. Help?

What is the deal with profs and pints?

Their events have been getting promoted on my Facebook feed for about 6 months, but the topics seemed kind of off to me so I never went to any. Recently they had a gross picture of a guy doing that porn ish cross eyed-face, and also a suspiciously AI picture for their recent one about The Pitt. When I posted a comment asking if they used AI, they immediately blocked me. Does anyone know anything about these people? They seem weird.

Donating blood

I read about the national blood shortage recently and wanted to donate asap, though shamefully this would be my first time donating. Should I just use the Red Cross to find a place? Any insider tips from regular blood donors local to Baltimore would be greatly appreciated.

In the garden

Can anyone tell me about what jumping spider this is or whether it’s male/female? I’m a casual spood appreciator in Baltimore, MD, USA.

Mosaic Virus?

I was taking a picture of this lace bug on my New England Aster, but then I noticed the mottling on the leaves. I’m in Baltimore, MD, USA. This plant is outdoors, south-facing, getting about 4-6 hours of mostly indirect light (it’s shaded by a tree) in a garden with mostly native plants, and I have not used any herbicides this year. I occasionally water this area of the garden with rainwater collected from my roof.

I’m so sad! I’m staying with friends in NYC and brought a bouquet from my garden. This Golden Alexander has what a think is a swallowtail instar on it. Do people think I should bring the stem to Prospect Park (where there are native plantings) or should I bring him back to Maryland with me when I return on Monday?
