Anyone here considered unattractive in Malaysia but suddenly considered attractive overseas?

My skin is on the sawo matang side, and my facial features are mostly south indian (I'm malay + indian Mix). Got told that I am not as attractive as light skin people as a child. My thick eyebrows and bolder features aren't helping, too. Got crushes on a lot of malay guys who in the end all of them rejected me, with one guy saying that it's because I am not fair enough and he preferred amoi looking/amoi. Chinese and indian guys some more, got crushes on them, but they usually only stick to chinese women and indian women. Plus i wore tudung at school, takkan la nak approach camtu je.

So I never got into relationship in Malaysia. Not only that, but thanks to strict conservative family, I never really made friends and grew up with social anxiety.

I started communicating with Westerners on the internet, and they told me that some things that asians generally find unattractive are attractive for them, and that asian beauty standards are too strict. That was like at least 7-10 years ago.

I got a scholarship to study overseas (europe) and it was an eye-opening. The features that people find unattractive in my home country are considered attractive here, and also rare. Being called exotic (it's not healthy I know) but bruh. I got more chances here. I just needed to be careful to not fall in superficial romantic discourses.

Fast forward in 3 years time I have a boyfriend matsalleh, who I met during studies. He really loves how I look, but unfortunately I still couldn't fully shake off the social conditioning since childhood. Breaking my mental shackles as days go by, but I just couldn't escape from it. I mean, in europe it's not really 100% inclusive, if you know what I mean, but they are more accepting of diverse looks.

Should I take Ancestey DNA as a Malay?

Hi, I am from Malaysia and ethnically Malay on paper (with known mixes). I have always wanted to dig into my family's genealogy, but I am not sure with which company. I am aware that they have a huge database on european and american ethnics, not sure if they would break down as precisely for southeast asian, south asian and middle eastern dna (we don't know from which part, could be the persian region).

Is colorism still a thing in this country?

I'm malay/mamak woman (can pass as indian) and wanna know. As I was growing up, I see fair and white skin are all the rage and the standard. Someone having darker skin, especially women, are seen as unattractive and ugly. Is still mindset still dominant in Malaysia? it's crazy how I feel attractive af in Europe and got approached and complimented, while in Malaysia it's the opposite, got told that I need to lighten my skin, and the beauty standards here seem to be either minah salleh or amoi.

Being a volunteer educator in Malaysia for underprivileged groups

I am a Malaysian who's studying abroad. This week I will fly to Malaysia for the two-month summer holiday. I have always wanted to teach underprivileged kids (orphans, poor, indigenous tribes, etc..) Math/Physics (since that's my major). Any available channels for me to reach out to them?

(Polynesians)?

What are the signs of depression that people always neglect?

I (F23) have been feeling down, easily insecure, feeling ugly and all, suddenly gained weight without realizing, couldn't get up from the bed for hours, sleep much longer than I should, couldn't think properly, self deprication, and I have been wondering if all of these are actually symptoms of something?

I am too tired to write the context here but to keep it short: I study abroad in a european country of very different culture and language, and failed some papers, and currently in a process to get transferred to other uni, but during summer will travel to home country.

My asian home country is conservative. People are religious and so are my family. My boyfriend (M24), the European guy from the country I study at, is not of the same religion as mine so there is quite a conflict. The societal and cultural and religious expectations have been mounting on me. Overall i hate the average mentality of my countrymen. It's one of the big reasons why I study in another country way further, it is to escape them. They are kinda close minded except for my sisters. But we have this extremely strong emphasize on satisfying older generation and all the talking behind your back. Imagine my mom acussing my boyfriend as a foreign agent enemy of the state just because he has slightly different view on geopolitics than the general consesus in the country.

I just... ughhhhhhh... sometimes I feel like critical thinking is dead in the country.

While in this european country, I have really low self confidence. We from this particular asian region has been cursed with extreme inferiority complex and white worshipping to an extent, so I feel ugly AS HECK. Everyone - my family, society has been enforcing this view that we are somehow inferior. I look myself at the mirror and hoping if my nose can get pointier and Higher and narrower, less roundier face, if my skin can get lighter, probably with lighter eyes and hair too, skinnier bones and all. Bigger eyes. In this eastern european country I am at, the women are goddesses. I just can't help but to think I am a Monster. They also think I am ugly except for my boyfriend. I'm glad that I have him tbh. But I still feel ugly af.
