is there any pattern to when voters ignore category fraud?

many people are bothered by "category fraud" (i.e. lead performances being campaigned for and nominated/winning in supporting categories). every now and then the voters reject campaigning and place a lead performance in the lead category. some more recent examples include:

  • keisha castle-hughes in whale rider
  • kate winslet in the reader (though one could argue she was supporting in this one)
  • quvenzhane wallis in beasts of the southern wild

not sure if it's coincidence or not, but the examples i could think of are women. it's so interesting to me enough voters rejected the category fraud for these, but not in plenty of other situations. what's the explanation?

what other reacher books must i read?

i've read several of the reacher books and enjoy them, but they also follow a formula for the most part. i have no interest in reading all of them, but do want to read the ones considered the best. here are the ones i've read, and let me know if there are 2-3 others that are musts (and for god's sake no one say "read them all"):

persuader
the enemy
one shot
bad luck and trouble
gone tomorrow
61 hours (currently reading)
no plan b
in too deep

i've liked them all, but my favorite has probably been the enemy because of how it brought in reacher's family life. it made it feel different.

Iga Swiatek is now an absurd 19-2 in 'major' finals

Iga is 6-0 in slam finals, 1-0 in year-end finals, and 12-2 in WTA 1000 finals. so, 19-2 overall. that is insane. she is clutch in big finals.

does anyone remember this movie theater opening?

when i went to the movies in the early 2000s there was an opening "trailer" for the theater that featured albert finney from annie saying "let's all go to the movies" and then had various audience reaction shots. i remember one reaction shot being of some military men cheering. i think there was also a woman eating popcorn who had an excited reaction. does anyone else remember it? i was trying to find it on youtube.

"one sweet day" longevity

considering its record breaking run at #1 in the 1990s, you can say "one sweet day" should stream better. at the same time, a song about a dead loved one isn't exactly one people are going to put on repeat on a consistent basis. also its streaming isn't terrible, especially on youtube where it's nearing 400 million views. what do you all think?

in real life how long would you have given lucy?

it's a tv show so of course we need situations each week, but if you were acually ricky, fred, and/or ethel, by which incident (i.e. episode) would you have had enough and separated yourself from lucy?

tom hanks and oscar

tom hanks of course famously won back-to-back oscars and has 4 other nominations, but it's wild to me he doesn't have even more nominations. he has an incredible career of performances that weren't nominated:
a league of their own
apollo 13
the green mile
captain phillips
saving mr banks
sully
the post

it's very surprising he didn't get nominated for at least a couple of those performances. it seems like some people can get nomination for nearly anything, so i wonder why someone who seems well-liked can't get in for great performances.

reese witherspoon is an underacknowledged actress

i know reese has a (somewhat controversial) oscar and another nomination, but across the oscars and the emmys i find her really under-acknowledged. when you look at the range of great performances she's given, it's impressive but also shows how she's taken for granted.

the man in the moon
freeway
pleasantville
election
american psycho
legally blonde
vanity fair
walk the line - oscar winner
wild - oscar nomination

and then on tv:
friends - no awards (should have at least been emmy nominated)
big little lies - emmy nominee
the morning show - emmy and sag nods but no wins
little fires everywhere - no emmy or sag nod for acting

has there been a better year for best actress than 1993?

has there been a more stacked year for best actress than 1993? and by that i don't just mean the 5 nominated performances, but also the performances that weren't nominated.

the nominees were:

  • holly hunter for the piano (winner)
  • angela bassett for what's love got to do with it
  • stockard channing for six degrees of separation
  • emma thompson for the remains of the day
  • debra winger for shadowlands

those were all terrific performances, but then you look at who else was in the running that year but didn't get in:

  • michelle pfeiffer for the age of innocence (still not sure how she was left out)
  • debra winger for a dangerous woman (many would say she is better in this one)
  • juliette binoche for blue
  • ashley judd for ruby in paradise
  • patricia arquette for true romance
  • marisa tomei for untamed heart
  • meg ryan for sleepless in seattle
  • janet jackson for poetic justice
  • anjelica huston for addams family values

there is a solid lineup just among the performances that weren't nominated. i am sure there are a few other years that are up there. what are they?

why did voters like toni braxton so much?

please do not see this as criticism of toni. i love her. it's just interesting to me how well she did compared to her peers. her win for best new artist falls in line with sade, jody watley, and mariah also winning best new artist. the more interesting thing to me is that she won r&b female twice before whitney or mariah ever won it, beating out whitney, aretha, and janet the first time and aretha and anita the second time (and ended up winning it three times). she also won pop female over celine in the mid-1990s, winning pop female before celine ever did.

toni has 7 grammys total, which is more than whitney, mariah, celine, and janet have.

why do you think toni won so much compared to her peers, and they were peers who were ultimately all more successful? (again, this is not criticism of toni, just wondering why she was better loved in the genre fields)

why no nomination for alan alda in crimes and misdemeanors?

i just realized alan alda won critics awards from new york and from national board of review for crimes and misdemeanors. he also got a bafta nod. he didn't get an oscar nod, but his co-star martin landau did despite his only precursor being a nomination l.a. critics. i know things weren't as streamlined then, but it still seems odd since alan alda was also fairly well known and accomplished. is there a story there? maybe because he was seen as a tv actor?

reese witherspoon should have won for freeway

i'd have given reese an oscar nomination and maybe a win for freeway. it's too bad this one seem so unknown/forgotten.

maybe the most i laughed at the show

glenn lying down already had me lmao, but then the toilet paper and his reaction and cheyenne reacting like a horror movie just took me to where i couldn't breathe...

glenn and cheyenne could have been paired together more, as could cheyenne and dina.

"prize wheel" - season 6

i re-watched this episode last night, and it has to be among my very favorite episodes.

for one, there are just a lot of good lines ("oh please glenn, hard g" and sayid telling justine her mom lives in sarasota). there's also the great storyline with the wheel and how glenn wants commentary, but then how it ends with them all getting catharsis by hitting it.

on top of that, the character development for both dina and jonah is great here. i love how the show really takes it to dina with how she now has to live up to the criticism she's doled out, and jonah has to start really looking at his life.

it's also interesting to me how quickly jonah undermines his own beliefs by continually asking for breaks, which makes cheyenne more work. i think it's very accurate that it's easy for people to have ideals when it's easy, but what about when you get some hope and power?

what happened between amy and cheyenne?

early in the series amy and cheyenne were painted as being at least somewhat close, considering amy's role in cheyenne's wedding and such. by season 5 cheyenne is shown being surprised she's one of amy's favorites.

more so, i guess it speaks to the reduction of cheyenne's role in the series post-baby. she really only had an established dynamic with mateo at work post-baby. i would have liked more of her and dina together, and her and garrett were funny together.

grammys hall of fame process

what is the hall of fame process?

i know mariah carey hasn't ever been a grammys fave, but how is "all i want for christmas is you" not yet in this hall of fame when stuff that has come out after it (like lucinda williams and buena vista social club is)?

obviously a running plot point in episodes is lucky scheming to get into various shows. she also continually blames ricky for blocking her, but in actuality she ends up in a ton of various projects. is it ever addressed that she wasn't actually blocked?

where is little ricky all day? the girls are at the dress shop, and we see ricky and fred walk by without little ricky. then lucy runs home to answer the phone and she asks ricky how little ricky is, and he say he's been fine all day. where was he?

i mean, i also get that realism is not the point considering they buy, run, and then sell an entire dress shop in a matter of 2-3 days lmao
