Differences between Ashkenazi, Sephardic and Mizrahi naming customs?

What are some of the differences between Ashkenazi, Sephardic and Mizrahi naming customs?

For example, Ashkenazi Jews avoid naming children after living relatives, whereas Sephardic and Mizrahi Jews actively do this. Any other interesting differences you know about or have noticed?

"Years of service" calculation for long service awards

Curious in hearing how different departments calculate years of service for Long Service Awards (10-year anniversary, 15-year anniversary, 20-year anniversary, etc.)

Is it based on years of pensionable service (including service buyback, pensionable LWOP, etc.)?

Is it based only on months where you received pay (i.e. same as the definition for accruing vacation leave credits)?

Some other definition?

Pag-ibig for household helper

Do you pay for and/or contribute to your household helper's Pag-Ibig?

I am in the process of hiring a helper (first time). I included my contributions to the helper's SSS and PhilHealth in the draft contract; however, the helper is asking if I could remove PhilHealth and replace it with contributing to her Pag-Ibig account.

My understanding from reading the Pag-Ibig website is that it is a loans/savings program and not healthcare coverage, so I'm not sure how it would be a substitute for PhilHealth. Also, I understood that PhilHealth is mandatory, not optional.

Any advice or guidance would be appreciated. Thank you.

Does Ontario offer any tax incentives for businesses that hire locals?

I've heard of tax incentive programs specifically for hiring students and apprentices, but a friend says there is also a tax credit program for businesses that hire Ontario residents more broadly.

I searched the Ontario government website and couldn't find anything to confirm this. Thought I'd check with the tax experts in this sub to validate.

What to expect on terms of prenatal appointments? [ON]/[QC]/[ABROAD]

[EDIT: Typo in the post title! I meant what to expect in terms of...]

I'm a Canadian TTC currently on a work assignment overseas but will be relocating back to Canada (exact location in the Ottawa/Gatineau region TBC, hence the two provinces in the title).

The timing of my return would likely fall sometime in the second trimester of pregnancy or very early third trimester, so I want to get a sense of the 'typical'/standard prenatal appointments one would get normally in ON/QC, to compare against what I'd be getting overseas. I'm working in a middle-income developing country right now so I mostly want to anticipate if there will be any major gaps/differences in the prenatal care here vs. back home, since I'll be changing healthcare systems part-way through the pregnancy.

Is the list below an accurate description for standard ON prenatal appointments and tests? Is it very different in QC?

And I guess more generally, does anyone have experience moving from overseas to Canada during a pregnancy and trying to reconcile different healthcare systems, test timing, and standards of care as a result?

First trimester (0 to 13 weeks)

- First prenatal appointment

- Blood test to determine your blood type and test for rubella, hepatitis B and C, sexually transmitted infections and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)

- Urine test

- Pap test

- Dating ultrasound to determine how far along you are in pregnancy

- Enhanced First Trimester Screening (FTS) to screen for genetic conditions

Second trimester (14 to 27 weeks)

- 18 to 22 weeks: Anatomy scan ultrasound to monitor your baby’s development and the location of the placenta

- 24 to 28 weeks: Glucose challenge testing for diabetes screening and a complete blood count to check for anemia

- 21 to 32 weeks: Tdap vaccine may be considered to be given to you

- 28 weeks: Antibody screening if you are Rh negative; you will also receive an injection of Rh(D) immune globulin injection at this time to prevent Rhesus disease

Third trimester (28 to 40 weeks)

- Prenatal appointments every two weeks, then every week as your due date approaches

- Monitoring for medical complications such as diabetes and high blood pressure, which are more likely to occur at this time

- Monitoring the position of your baby

- 35 to 37 weeks: Group B streptococcus swab

Depending on your health and your baby’s needs, you may be offered other tests, such as an ultrasound.

Six weeks postpartum

Appointment with your health-care provider for a postpartum checkup.

Maternity/parental leave for grad students (break in studies)

Does anyone have experience requesting a break in studies (leave) due to pregnancy and caring for a newborn?

The closest I could find was "medical leave for grad students" (https://uwaterloo.ca/accessability-services/students/accommodation-supports/graduate-student-medical-leave) and while I could see a clear case for pregnancy being considered a medical condition, I'm not sure if needing to care for a newborn would also qualify.

Ideally, it would be to take 12-18 months off from studying, then resume the program (master's level). Anyone know if this is possible / how likely it is to get approved?

Hello. I'm non-desi, but married to an ABCDesi. Please help settle a debate between my spouse and my MIL.

Last year, I wore a lehenga to my brother-in-law's jaggo (pre-wedding function).

This year, we're invited to another family wedding event: My spouse's cousin's wedding reception.

Is it a huge no-no to wear the same lehenga to both events? (Spouse says it's fine, MIL says no.)

For context, last year's jaggo and this year's family wedding are in two different cities (5 hours apart). And out of the ~200 guests at last year's jaggo and ~400 guests expected at this year's reception, maybe 30ish are in common (attended both), including the bride in this year's wedding. Also, as a non-desi, I don't own many Indian outfits, and this specific lehenga was an investment piece that I had custom made for me in India, and that I absolutely love and would love to re-wear if possible.

I'm not too fazed by my MIL's opinion on this lol, but genuinely, do you think other guests would notice/care/judge? (Or worse, feel offended somehow?) I especially don't want to offend the bride or her family (it's their big day).

What do you think?
