On sewing your own

EDITED BECAUSE I WASN'T DONE!

My qualifications: I've been sewing for over 20 years, made everything from prom dresses to full lolita coords to historic outifts.

So, you want to sew your own jirai clothes? AMAZING WOW YAY yes I approve however...

  1. You probably should make something simple first. I recommend pajamas, using a commercial pattern and a fabric you like. If it ends up a little weird, who cares? Plus you'll learn how a pattern works, how to read it, etc etc.
  2. When you are looking for a pattern, focus on the overall SHAPE of the garment, not the decoration.
  3. Learn the terminology: yoke, princess seams, darts, etc. So, if I wanted to make something along the lines of the picture, I'd want patterns described as having princess seams and a yoke, or need to understand how to do that.

check out that warping!

  1. Understand you are going to have to "hack" the pattern. I haven't seen anything that looks specifically "jirai" so far (outside of Japanese magazines), but you could use other patterns if you can figure out or get help on altering them or embellishing them.

You could use this to make the white piece!

Look at the line drawings and compare to the other picture. View A, with the ruffles from D would get you pretty close if you round off the bottom and change the cuffs!

  1. Don't be afraid of hand-sewing or machine sewing. I often attach little details by hand because I can do it near invisibly compared to a machine. It's also a LOT less scary than trying to do fiddly bits on a machine until you get used to the machine.

  2. MAKE A MUSLIN MAKE A MUSLIN. This means you are going to get some cheap fabric (old bedsheets are great) and sacrifice it to the sewing gods. This will let you figure things out before you use your good fabric. I have got to the point where if I am sewing for myself, the fabric wasn't ridiculously expensive, and the pattern in simple, I skip this step.

  3. You don't have to have a sewing machine but you ABSOLUTELY must have an iron and know how to use it.

US Jirais- Importing, my experiences

This post from almost 2 weeks ago was very informative, but alas I saw about 3 days after I placed an order using FromJapan as a proxy. So, I just had to wait. When the items (dresses) arrived at the warehouse, I had them shipped out through ECMS. They arrived today. No problems. Make of this what you will.

How to "fake" running hills?

I live in Western Kansas. It is very very flat here. There are no hills. I don't have access to a treadmill. I'd like to challenge myself, so what should I do instead? Run with a backpack full of books?

5th Gen Groups with All Members (currently) Adults?

So yeah, I want to check out newer groups but I'm not interested in groups with child members. I prefer more powerful sounds over dreamy but I'll give anything a chance if it's by actual adult women.
