Haircut- what i asked for vs what I got

Doesn't really matter what photo i show, i always seem to end up with a fade... anyone else have this problem? But I'm also visiting a conservative country (turkey) so i guess I'm happy they even cut my hair, but holy tan line. It's not just me, right? These are totally different haircuts? My hair was long enough for the first...

making your luggage unique!

How do you all make your luggage stand out?

I just got a hard shell cal-pak suitcase. I've only had soft shell before, but needed a smaller bag since I'm learning to pack smarter (yay) and this one was on major discount. I'm trying to fancy it up to make it unique- I tried putting a giant vinyl sticker on the side and it wouldn't stick. I tried using modge podge (didn't work), and hot glue- the hot glue peels right off the rough texture of the case. Big bummer since the decal looked incredible, it just kept peeling off by itself.

I like making my luggage stand out. I'm not a carry-on only type of traveler, mostly because I love shopping and I need lots of room on the way back. Does anyone have experience with this? I have a ton of art supplies- is there a primer I could use then paint with acrylic? or a primer that would make this huge decal stick (it's one that was designed for cars)? I have a rainbow luggage strap but I want more...

Music lesson while visiting?

Hello- I will be in Izmir August 11th and 12th. I would like to take a music lesson while I am there- I would love to learn a traditional song on a stringed instrument- I am very interested in the kemenche, but I also would be interested in the oud or another instrument. I play violin and guitar fluently, and love having the opportunity to play instruments that are less common in the USA and to learn about other cultures. I will be staying in the kulturepark area. So far I have only learned 4 or 5 words in Turkish- but the teacher would not need to speak fluent English. Music is the universal language.

Thank you!

Paddleboard adventure

Went paddle boarding today with my pup. She was happy until the end when she had to potty or perhaps got anxious, either way, she went from being chill to telling me she was done. i couldn't paddle us to land fast enough and she jumped in the water, scaring herself (life jacket worked great, and she was attached to the board so i scooped her right out). So i learned today that she enjoys an hour (which we've done quite a few times), but 2 hours is too long for her. We're home now and shes had lunch and recovered. 4wd adventure chihuahua!

A breakup letter to Keens

UPDATE (edit): I sent Keen this, and they have offered to send me a complimentary pair of shoe of my choice. I requested the men's open toed targhee sandals- I had a similar pair years ago that were amazing, and I miss the open toed design. We'll see how it fares!

Dear Keen,

For 16 years, you have been my trusted companion. We have hiked hundreds miles, over mountains and deserts, on land and sea. We traversed continents. You fit like my other half, molding to my foot with utmost comfort. I never had to shrink for you- you never judged my width, allowing me to be relaxed. “Break in” had no meaning here- we never broke each other, just protected and cushioned from the harsh world of sharp stones and uneven ground.

So when I heard the rumors that you were coming apart- losing your sole so early, I disregarded them. After all, we had a decade and a half of building trust.

When it came time for one of my biggest trips yet, of course I brought you, my trusted companion. 10 miles down into the grand canyon when the unthinkable happened- you came unglued, you tried to hold on by the tips of your toes, flapping on stones before completely coming apart. Both of you at once- in synchronicity, separating, and leaving me vulnerable- with 3 more days and 16 more miles left to go.

I was left with a light foam with no tread as I scaled class 3 rock climbing, swam under waterfalls, and prayed over the stitching every night.

I depended on you, and you let me down. You have broken our pact of trust.

I regret that I will be moving on and trying new brands. It’s been a good 16 years, but I need a shoe I can rely on.

Sincerely,

bigfoot

Photo of my collection of Keens with the offending sandal in the bottom right hand corner. The backpacking trip where the alpine divorce happened was havasu falls. It literally came apart as I reached the first waterfall. I had read about this happening in recent eviews, but I never thought it would happen to me. :(

EDIT: adding a list of other brands recommended by commenters:

Oboz

Salomon

Chacos (also another commenter said they’ve gone downhill)

Merrels (moabs in wide)

Danner leafs (trail runners)

Lemas (barefoot/zero drop with wide toe box out of Colorado)

Zamberlans (need a significant break in period, resolable)

Hokas

Lowa Renegade is an incredible shoe. As are Scarpas and La Sportiva albeit pricey. Meindl are still extremely popular in Central Europe. Hanwag (ironically founded the brother of the Lowa guy) has old-school ass shoes, extremely good quality

permit transfers

All of our group leaders are the same, but one of the people in our group couldn't come and we found a different friend to come instead. I see a lot of permits available on this sub- has anyone had any trouble at the office getting wristbands if there's a different name within the group but 90% of the folks are the same?

bringing medication

I have one person in my group who is worried that our bags are going to be searched and has stressed that no one brings their e-cigs even if they leave them in the car. I feel like if the permits aren't available until 6 am, no one will be searching us at 4 am when we start hiking, but was wondering your experiences.

Now I don't smoke, but that had me worried about my prescription meds. I put them in individual little envelopes in a ziploc bag and have each one labeled- it would take up way too much space and weight to have them in their bottles. should I take photos of their bottles or am I all good?

A 7 mile hike on tiny legs!

We were both exhausted by the end! I only carried her the last 4 minutes because she didn't like the gravel in the parking lot.

She's 10 lbs and at least 6 years old.
