Is it advisable to rent in mckinley for onsite work in BGC?

Per title. I have onsite work and I'm thinking of renting somewhere nearby. My budget at most is 15k but I see that the lowest I can get inside bgc is 25k.

Because of this, I’m looking at options in the McKinley area (e.g., Stamford, Ridgewood, Morgan Suites, etc.), which seem to fit my budget. My main concern is the daily commute to and from BGC.

For those who’ve been in a similar situation, would you recommend this setup? If not, what alternatives or practical advice would you suggest?

Thank you all in advance

How does network traffic analysis work in the context of deep packet inspection?

I know you can setup a MITM and configure it in such a way to capture and decrypt traffic (ssh, https, etc). I also know you can record packets to pcap using packet inspection tools like wireshark (very useful for troubleshooting network issues).

But what do network security professionals look at here? Do they just analyze the traffic metadata involved (eg. traffic source and destination, how much data was transferred, if destination site is in some sort of blacklist, etc)? Or do they instead assemble and then try to analyze the individual packets packets (ie data are you transmitting over ssh, what are the contents of HTTP websites you are viewing, etc)?

I'm just curious on how they work in both enterprise environments and autocratic regimes + their use case, and if it's the latter, how they are able to process it given the multitude of packet data in a typical pcap file.

Good Idea to Share a Family Supplementary Card for Working Professionals?

I have my own credit card with Unionbank and it's a low to mid tier card. Rewards are mid, credit limit is adequate, and I only use it for paying bills, utilities, or occasional online shopping. I live separate from my family.

My mom owns a BPI Visa Signature Card, and I'm thinking of applying a supplementary card from her card with separate billing.

I did some preliminary research, and if I proceed with this, I would get the perks tied to that card with almost no annual fee (we pay most family expenditures using that card so it would most probably just get waived) while paying only for my own expenses.

But, this prospect seems to good to be true and so I would like to double check if this is a good idea and if anyone else did the same thing?

Thanks!

Do browsers support any arbitrary protocol built on top of tcp or udp or is it vendor specific?

I'm interested in building my own application level protocol (layer 7) built on top of udp and have a browser parse it for fun, but I want to sound check my plan first.

In linux, you can just open a socket and write your own logic to stream data unto it, but I'm not sure about browsers.

So I'm asking the question in the title. If it is vendor specific, where can I find a list of supported protocols (ex: ssh , ftp, etc) and do all browsers conform to some open standard?

If someone could point me in to the right direction, it would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

The modern way of getting notified for a row change in a agnostic SQL dabatabase?

I'm using postgresql and in my current architecture, I'm have an asyncio worker thread polling the database every 2 min for changes in the "finished" state for a "job" table. This would be served over a websocket.

This is fine and all since my application has only medium write traffic, but I was curious what is the modern way of doing this that is database agnostic for future proofing? (ie in case we want to migrate to another db or if the application scales up)

I know postgresql has LISTEN/ NOTIFY, but my problem with that is that it is postgresql specific and that it might not work properly with connection pooling. I also know there is write ahead logging, but again is also postgresql specific.

What is your suggestion to this? Do I need to change my architecture?

Thanks!

What was the original ending for steven universe if it was not canceled?

Like, I just can't accept that we get a sword training + fighting arc with connie just for her to get wrecked by the diamonds in the end. There must have been more to this

Is there a service that allows me to make free text/ calls to any globe or smart numbers only through internet (voice over wifi/ ip)

As title above. Like, I'll just buy a data only sim (ex: gomo) or connect to a wifi hotspot and make text/calls through the internet.

In my research, the closest thing that I'm talking about is google voice sa states (not available here). I was wondering if there is a similar service provider here?

I’ve been in the field for 2-3 years now as a software engineer (still considered a junior/ associate?), but I’m starting to feel burned out and not as interested in the work anymore.

I'm not sure how it is like with other companies, but I'm tired of working with legacy software and constantly questioning the worth ("ambag") I give out to society (fintech ). Like, I know it's a bit naive sentiment, but I don't feel like I'm making the world a better place with my current field of work (contrary, it's the opposite).

The mundaneness of things, corpo culture, office politics, and current job market hell are all getting to me. Plus, with the current direction we're going with AI and ongoing pressure for a more "agentic" workflow, it doesn't feel like I'm doing any real engineering work anymore. (I've used agents before yes and I admit they are very efficient + I'm more of a reviewer / planner now than a coder)

I’m considering switching to something outside of tech, but I’m not sure what or how realistic that even is so I'm asking if other people made the same switch/ sentiments.

For those who’ve left tech:

  • What did you transition into?
  • Were you able to utilize what you learned in tech as SWE, DevOps, IT, etc

My current position is stable and compensation is kinda fair, but I'm not happy with it anymore or I don't see myself being happy in the upcoming years. I hate my job, but I also have to pay rent. So, I'm a bit stuck / conflicted on what to do

For any that disagree with my sentiment, why or why not and what would be your opinion?

Thank you all in advanced.
