#138: Dolly Parton - Coat Of Many Colors (1971)
Wow, great album to celebrate the 4th of July and America’s 250th birthday. I love every song on this album. Unlike other country albums I’ve gotten so far, this one makes you feel like you’re actually in her hometown in Tennessee with her while she tells you stories from her life. And I’m saying this as someone who usually doesn’t enjoy country. I do have one complaint though, WHY AM I GETTING THIS NOW!? I’M GOING TO BE IN THE SMOKIES NEXT WEEK! WHY AM I NOT GETTING THIS THEN? I suppose it’s better than getting another Elvis Costello album today.
Random Dolly Parton fact: In her memoire, she told a story of a time she went to a bar in West Hollywood that was having a Dolly Parton look alike contest. She entered the contest while over-exaggerating everything about her appearance, and lost to a man.
Was Coat Of Many Colors better than yesterday’s album, Van Halen by Van Halen? Almost, but not quite.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Appetite for destruction through sgt pepper are 5 stars
My aim is true through bridge over troubled water are 4 stars.
Will the circle be unbroken through pretenders are 3 stars
Giant steps through ambient 1/music for airports are 2 stars
Safe as milk has 1 star
Observations: I am now 2/9 of the way done with Neil Young
At 135 albums, I have still only generated one from before 1966
I have generated one from the top 20 albums (sgt pepper) and one from the bottom 20 (scum)
Scum is also the only album classified as metal which I have not given 5 stars
Attenborough is alive tho

5s go from 2112 to Eagles. 4s go from Mellon Collie to Elvis in Memphis. 3s go from Disraeli Gears to Kilimanjaro. 2s go from Woodface to Let’s Get Killed. Logical Progression is the only 1.
Albums that surprised me: Sunshine Hit Me, Blood Sweat & Tears, Superfuzz Bigmuff, Real Life, Lost in the Dream, Scum, The Koln Concert (in a really boring way)

The first album I got was Licensed To Ill by the Beastie Boys, and the one I got today was Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness by The Smashing Pumpkins. In my opinion, the individual songs on the smashing pumpkins album were better on their own than songs from Licensed To Ill, but Licensed To Ill seems more cohesive as an album in itself. That said, I gave LTI 5 stars and I plan on giving Mellon Collie 4 stars. Licensed To Ill wins but only by a little bit.
