My beautiful old lady Caramel Corn! She had surgery on her mouth last week and we just found out it’s NOT CANCER!!
Caramel Corn (aka CC) is a former stray I rescued from a local flea market a few months ago because she was visibly sick and injured and drooling like crazy. She turned out to be one of the sweetest little cats I’ve ever met and all she wants is to be brushed and petted and fed haha. Shes still pretty tiny at about 10 years old and besides being spayed as a kitten, she hadn’t received any vaccines or vet care since. We also found out that she’s FIV positive, so there went my idea of getting her healthy and returning her to her colony.
I got her up to date on all of her vaccines and she had a few weeks of antibiotics for a URI, and we finally did the surgery for her mouth this past week. Her mouth was swollen and she drooled excessively, and during the surgery they removed around half of her teeth and a couple concerning masses from her gums and the base of her tongue. They were sent out for biopsy and the vet said it looked like it might be cancer, which wouldn’t be very treatable in her condition, so I was dreading the results….
But today I received an email from the vet office and it’s NOT CANCER!!! It looks like all of the abnormalities stemmed from the dental disease and it should be a reasonably easy fix and recovery! She’ll need annual dentals to keep ahead of any future issues, but she should be able to live a normal happy life!! If it’s not obvious yet, I’m absolutely keeping her and I’m so excited to give her the chill life she deserves after being on the street for 10 years. I love her so much!
I recently took in this stray (CC, aka Caramel Corn) who turned out to be FIV+ with stomatitis. Shes two weeks into living in my bathroom and one week into her antibiotics and she’s so much more lively and cuddly, she’s like a new cat!
My issue is that she’s old (around 10yrs) and was extremely dirty when I picked her up. Lots of fleas, skin flaky and dirty, fur matted and gross. For the first week she basically felt damp every time I touched her. I figured out that it’s probably from the stomatitis - she couldn’t groom herself correctly, and she drooled so much and her mouth was gross so what she could reach (her paws, tail, and tummy) were continually wet and messy.
Daily brushing has helped immensely! Her stomatitis is also clearing up beautifully, she no longer drools constantly and she’s bright and alert. My concern is that her paws and underside are still pretty matted and dirty, and her skin is super flaky and dry. I tried giving her a bath when I first got her, but even though she was small and tired and sick she put up a FIGHT. I resorted to using pet wipes to get what I could off, but it doesn’t really get down to her skin. What suggestions do you have for bathing her? Wet washcloths weren’t super helpful either, she shied away pretty hard and I didn’t want to hurt or scare her. Is there some kind of leave-in cleaner for sensitive skin that I can sort of brush through her fur that isn’t toxic if she grooms herself?
I’d also like to note that not once has she ever hissed, growled, or swatted at me, even when I was trying to catch her. She’s the sweetest baby, she just also has strong feelings about water.
TLDR: I took in this dirty and sick/injured kitty and Im asking for resources or suggestions to help with vet bills.
I found this beautiful girl at the San Jose flea market. She’s one of the community ferals there but was noticeably dirty, tiny, and drooling like crazy. I spoke to the people who own the booths where she mainly lives and they said they weren’t sure how to take care of her and she wouldn’t let them pick her up. There used to be a service that took care of the community cats at the flea market (she has an old ear tip and the lady said she’s pretty sure she’s spayed and chipped) but they haven’t come by in a while. All this to say…. Well, I couldn’t just leave her there. With the permission and help of the booth owners, I trapped her and brought her home.
I made a vet appointment for her on Wednesday, and she doesn’t seem to be in any immediate danger. She’s eating wet food just fine and used the litter box I set up for her. My concern is that I don’t know if I’ll be able to afford vet care for her past the initial checkup - I have four cats of my own already. I’ve contacted shelters and rescues in the area, but none have space to take her and the only financial resources most offer are for TNR, which she doesn’t need. Does anyone know of any rescues or programs in California/Bay Area that can offer financial assistance for veterinary work? My concern is also that I don’t qualify for most low-income help because i make decent money, but living in the Bay Area is so expensive I still won’t be able to afford it if she needs any further vet services. Any advice or resources are very much appreciated!
A day late for the release of Book 8, but the Carl and Donut bookshelf leaner is finished! So many thanks to Undead Riot on MakerWorld for the file!
I went a little harder on shading than normal to compensate for the layer lines, which surprisingly didn’t annoy me as much as I anticipated. I usually print in resin but this is far too large for my Elegoo, so a 26-hour print on the Snapmaker it was. I’m pretty proud of it tbh, I haven’t painted in a while!
This one is for the friends who got me into DCC as thanks. Now time to paint one for myself….
