The Roots of Japanese Rock and Pop (3)
The Sadistic Mika Band was formed in 1972. Although their debut album sold only a few thousand copies in Japan, it garnered acclaim upon its release in the UK; accepting an offer from a British producer, they released their second album, *Kurofune* (Black Ships), in Japan, the UK, and the US in 1974. In 1975, they gained further recognition and popularity by serving as the opening act for the British band Roxy Music on their UK tour, yet the group disbanded immediately after releasing their third album that same year. Members at the time of the breakup included Yukihiro Takahashi, Masayoshi Takanaka, and Tsugutoshi Goto.
Also in 1972, music critic Yoichi Shibuya launched *Rockin' on*, a magazine dedicated to Western music. This initiative is said to have been a form of ideological movement aimed at rooting rock music within the Japanese cultural landscape and everyday life. His tendency to challenge the status quo―acting like the "nail that sticks out"―provoked backlash within the industry, and he reportedly faced loud verbal abuse and heckling. In 1986, he launched *Rockin' on Japan*, a publication focused on Japanese music. From 2000 onwards, he organized major music events such as Rock in Japan Festival, Countdown Japan, and Japan Jam. It can be said that his philosophy and actions played a pivotal role in transforming Japan from a country where quality music often went unheard into a nation that produces musicians capable of succeeding on the global stage. While many hoped he would continue to surprise the world, he passed away in 2023 at the age of 74.
