Yes one of them is my own! I ordered it for a friend.
Hey all! It pains me to say this but I need to sell my leather bounds. I’m moving and I have to down size A LOT. I want them to go to a good home. I have them priced fairly under what you can get them from the website. Words of Radiance is a first addition and signed. They are on eBay, and I hope I’ve kept within the rules.
The Way of KingsWords of Radiance
*Words of Radiance has sold!
*they both have been sold!
Hello all, my name is Mike. I am a self-published author. I made a website on tertulia, it was really great and easy to use! It also includes email and a newsletter feature. I have been studying how to grow an audience, and the main thing that I see is using newsletters. My question is: how do I get people to sign up? I have a few friends and family members who have signed up, but I don't know how to get more people. I have ideas for the newsletter: sharing the writing process, Chapter names, story ideas, letting the audience vote on ideas or parts of the story, and, of course, selling books. Thank you for your time and for reading! I'd love to sign up and swap newsletters!
I ordered 20 copies from ingramspark and they finally arrived! They look so good! It’s such a surreal experience to have my book in my hands.
Guys, gals, and folks, keep trying. Keep writing. There’s nothing better than this feeling. I don’t know if it’s any good or if it’s going to sell. But god damn it. I did it. I wrote a book and it’s here. If you need a sign to keep writing, here it is.
Thank you to everyone in this sub for your support and encouragement. You guys helped write this book.
Hello again, I am still getting the error message from IS using my cover from GetCovers. The message is:
PDF CONTAINS ICC COLOR PROFILES: We request files with no color profiles assigned. Please convert all colors to grayscale for black and white images, or CMYK for color images and remove all color profiles. Saving a new PDF with the default setting of PDF/X-1a:2001 will address the issue. For best results, please correct the issue(s) listed. You may refer to the File Creation Guide for further instructions on creating a compliant PDF.
I have been going back and forth with GetCovers, and they assure me every time the files are correct, but I am still getting the error. I have a Mac; I use Chrome, and I download the links they give. Am I the problem here? I have no experience with Adobe or Photoshop, and I am losing my mind. IS is taking days to get back to me, and Getcovers takes a day to respond every time. And they still haven't provided me with the correct files for IS one. Single. Time. Can someone walk me through this or help me with this?
Hello, I am a self-publishing author. That means I have to do everything myself. It has been incredibly hard but rewarding. The issue that I am having now is that I am trying to upload the cover of my book to a website named IngramSpark. They are a self-publishing website. I have the file for the cover. From GetCovers, this company said it should be the right file type. But every time I upload the file they gave me. I get this error message: PDF CONTAINS ICC COLOR PROFILES: We request files with no color profiles assigned.
Can someone please help me with this file? I have no experience with Adobe, Photoshop, or anything related to computers. I am on a Mac; I use Chrome to download and upload the files. And GetCovers takes a day to respond to me every time there is an issue. I have searched high and low on Google and Reddit for the fix, but nothing seems to work.
Since I was a child, I wanted to be a writer. I wrote stories, I wrote (terrible) poems, I wrote journals, and I dreamt of one day publishing a story. In August of 2025, I lost my dog, Bear. He was the best boy. I was an emotional wreck and didn’t think I would ever be happy again.
In November of ‘25, I decided to challenge myself by participating in Novel Writing Month. Where you write a novel in the month of November. I put aside the rules and expectations I set up for myself and wrote a story that I would want to read. I had one rule: 2,000 words a day. No matter what. I did it; every day I wrote 2,000 words. Some days it was 2,000 on the nose. Some days it was 3-4,000 words. Some days I was up till 4 am. Some days I didn't want to write, but I did it anyway.
I wrote Midnight City in 26 days.
I learned a lot about myself and about writing. It was the single most exhilarating experience of my life. I was living the dream. Then, I let it sit for six months. In those six months, I wrote the sequel. It was incredible. I decided that I would self-publish and try to find representation. I want to be a world-famous author, but you've got to be realistic about these things. The chances are slim to none. I just want people to read it now.
I then went into editing Midnight City.
DO. NOT. EDIT. YOUR. OWN. WORK.
I edited this fucking book six times. Our brains fill in the errors, the missing words, and the grammar rules we thought we knew. I missed so much. I finally caved and hired and editior. I had missed even more! I borrowed money to buy my own ISBNs. I tried to get an artist friend to make the book cover. HIRE A BOOK COVER ARTIST. I got the cover to where I wanted it. I formatted it to hell and back. I decided to publish through KDP for ebook and paperback. I'm working on IngramSpark, but that's its own nightmare.
Now, eight months after finishing my first draft. Midnight City is live and available on Kindle and Kindle Unlimited.
It has been the hardest I have ever worked. But, Goddamn, I have loved every minute of it.
Follow your dreams. Write every day, even if you dont want to. Hire an editor.
A special thank you to this subreddit and r/selfpublish. Your posts, comments, thoughts, wins, losses, questions, answers, and all of it in between have helped me more than you know. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
edit to add of course I fucked up the title. FML haha.
The dream has become a reality!!
I have doubled and triple-checked. I have a PDF in the format they want it in. The CMYK and the PDF/x-1a:2001 and I'm still getting this fucking message. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I wish there was a “shame me” flair. I have been reading and writing my whole life. I love it. It’s what I want to do for the rest of my life. I’ve written two book and I’m in the process of self publishing the first one.
I hired an editor from Fiverr and got my files back this morning. I’ve been working on it all day. They made a bunch of changes to the language that I’m not happy about, but that’s not the reason I feel like an idiot. I was reading the manuscript that they edited and I see in the dialog she keeps putting commas at the end when the dialogue ends with he said. Ex. “She likes plants,” he said. This threw me for a loop. I had no idea why the editor did this. Like what the fuck. It’s throughout the entire manuscript. So, I came here and wouldn’t you be surprised to find out that’s how it’s supposed to go! Obviously there’s more to it but god damn. I felt like I had been punched in the gut. I have no memory of ever learning this. I was flabbergasted when a comment said check any book. So, I did. I checked 30 random books in my library. All different genres and topics and even old ones. There it was. Every time. Always ending in a comma when it ends with he said. I never noticed it in the hundreds of thousands of books I’ve read in my life. I always thought it was supposed to be like this. “She likes plants.” He said.
All I can do is fix what I’ve written and go forward never making that mistake again. I feel like I’ve slipped into a parallel dimension.
**Edit to add.** Thank you, everyone, for your kind words and for being helpful. I really appreciate you all taking the time to comment.
Used getcovers and the experience has been great. Got some feedback on here and from my test readers. I think it turned out great. I can’t stop starting at. Got everything formatted and soon I’ll be publishing on KDP, Ingram, and anywhere else I can!
The one on the left was the first design they sent. My initial idea was a man falling from a skyscraper that is on fire and the building is being struck by lighting. To me the man looks comical. What do you fine people think?
Hello all, I wanted to thank you all first. This sub has been incredibly helpful and informative for me as I move towards publishing my first book. So from the bottom of my heart. Thank you.
To start off I need some advice and feedback. I have everything ready to go for KDP and ingramspark to put my book out there. Except the cover. I asked a friend and tattoo artist to help me dosing the cover. I’ve given her inspiration pictures, ideas, and the formatting with measurements KDP requires. We hammered out a deal that I will give her some money upfront and a small percentage of each book that is sold. I told her it would be very little as the self pub is a fickle game to earn money in. As well as a credit in the book as it should be. I don’t want my friends or anyone to be left behind. This all seemed fair to me.
I gave her all the info in March. I wasn’t finished with the edit so there was no rush. In June, i told her that everything was ready and if she could work on it that would be great. She was working and organizing a fundraiser for another friend and tattoo artist. So, I understood if she couldn’t do it, and I offered to go to another artist. She said she’ll get it to me on the 4th of July. I received a rough draft on the 4th and then a few days later another. Now, radio silence. Idk what to do or where to go from here. I know I’ve made mistakes, I should have asked for a timeline or deadline. I’m getting beyond frustrated.
Is the deal offered to much? Should I just try and find another artist or something all together different.
Thank you for all your help and any advice you have.
The way Emerson Locke saw things, he was already dead. But before he closes the coffin on his violent life. He is going to do whatever it takes to find out who killed his friend and take them to hell with him.
Dr. Nathan Payne has been at war his entire life. His hyperactive senses have left him alone and without purpose. Until his estranged sister leaves a voicemail of her kidnapping.
Both men are after different things. One seeks revenge, the other redemption. Together they’ll discover something sinister in the heart of New York and work together to uncover the truth behind Midnight City.
Veterans are missing off the streets. A gang of well-financed criminals are cleaning house and killing everyone in their way. Locke and Payne have to use everything their lives have taught them to battle the evil they discover.
My first book is being read by a few friends and I’m waiting for feedback, but I had an idea for the second book. So, I started writing it on April 25th of this year. I set a goal of 2,000 words a day. Some days I wrote 3-4k some days 2,001. It is so rewarding to see the story progress and come together!
I hope your writing is going well for you all!
So, I just had a killer writing session today. I’m getting about 2k words a day. I’m not doing that as hard rule or keeping track in a mathematical way. Just a goal I try to hit everyday. Well today I hit 3,500. I just saw it all. And did not want to stop. The previous day I had some organic connections blossom with how a character was feeling to a chapter I had written days ago. It all just fell into to place and I almost heard an audible click when I thought of the sentence.
I know there will be good days and bad. But we will always have days no matter what. We just have to keep showing up. How are you all feeling about writing as a whole? And how are you feeling about your writing specifically?
After much online searching I found this book, but I was wondering if anyone here has any recommendations? I want to understand all that I can. As I have noticed that Ireland seems to always be on the right side of history, where injustices are happening around the world.
I also want to share a piece of US history that I think you might like. In 1847 the Choctaw nation sent $170 to help the people of Ireland. The Choctaw having just survived their own genocide called The Trail of Tears. Knew what it was to fight a government trying to systematically kill them. There is a monument in Midleton, County Cork to commemorate this donation. There is another monument in Tuskahoma, Oklahoma. To commemorate the camaraderie between the two great nations.
As a white American that hates their government, and is ashamed of the history of my country. I feel it’s my duty to study, learn, and share all that I can of the bloody history of my country. To better to stop it from happening again.
Thank you for reading and sharing your recommendations!
