Does anybody have fic or meta analysis recommendations that extrapolate or expand on Dean giving himself false memories to cope?

In 8x7, we see that Dean had created an entire fake memory of failing to rescue Cas from Purgatory, blaming himself for the failure. Rather, Castiel had pushed Dean away, which Dean clearly couldn't accept as reality.

If folks have fic recs on the topic of Dean creating false narratives to the point he literally doesn't remember reality (of any genre), or meta analysis, I'd love to read it!

One of the most popular genres of fics are AUs where the backstory of our favourite character(s) doesn't exist as in canon.

What are the core elements that would make Sam, Dean and Cas "in character" for you, no matter what universe/background? I guess, what do you consider "intrinsic" vs what you can play with in terms of personality based on nurture/backstory.

E.g. Is Sam is naturally inclined toward academics? Is Dean always protective? Is Cas always awkward?

What would you consider the top 3-5 most important elements to a SPN AU fic to have the characters be "in character"?

I've been out of the fandom for a number of years, and I've come back to some truly amazing post-series fic.

Could I have some more recs? I only like top!Cas but not everyone tags their fics which makes finding things annoying.

If the AU is really truly excellent, I can also take some AU recs but I find that AUs can slip too easily into characterization that's a bit off.
