Regarding the recent video of the Sukhoi Su-57 flight, particularly sharp-eyed observers noticed a pod mounted under the fighter. Presumably, this is the 101KS-N, which had previously been demonstrated on a Su-57 prototype.
👉 The 101KS-N (“ground external module”) is a multichannel optical targeting pod system designed to detect and identify ground targets and to support the employment of airborne weapons against them.
In this case, it is worth recalling that the Su-57 was conducting flights relatively close to the border with Ukraine, not at a particularly large distance from the frontline area.
Despite the widespread use of targeting pods by foreign air forces — including on Russian-made fighters — such systems have never become common within the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS). This has long been considered one of the enduring shortcomings of Russian military aviation.
