I heard you lost your Appetite

I heard you lost your appetite when you stopped smoking. If only I could be so lucky. I have gained so much weight since I quit 6 weeks ago that I can barely fit in any of my clothes now. I am a musician and I have a formal gig tomorrow. I can't fit into any of my dress shirts. I will have to wear a guayabera and a blazer. Eff my life lmao.

I have been eating too well, I guess to stimulate that dopamine I am missing, but because of an injury, I haven't been exercising. I am almost 55 and this is a wake up call. Time to get it crackin' on the fitness.

"No Sabo"

'No sabo' is a dumb phrase to call people of Mexican descent that don't speak Spanish because even non Spanish speakers know what 'No sé' means. 'No sabo' is infantilizing, stigmatizing, and condescending.

I suggest we drop it from our vocabulary. No need to categorize people by their fluency or lack thereof in spanish. It is not an identity. Simply saying, I did not grow up speaking spanish is sufficient.

Deep in my 4th week check in

Heavy lifelong, all day toker, vaper, eater as evidenced by my user name. Still feeling brain fog, napping a lot. I have some good bud in my drawer but everytime I think of smoking it, I feel like, nah. I set a goal to clear out my system and I am sticking to it.

It hasn't been bad at all besides the fog, dreams have been entertaining. I have plenty to of things to keep me occupied, like playing music, but it is a struggle to not get tired when I practice.

I plan to start running but it is the dog days of summer here, hot hot hot, but I know it will be good for my brain chemicals.

I just wanted to post this, not to minimize how hard it is for many here, but to show that it is possible to not suffer that much so don't be afraid to try to stop. Just have a positive outlook, allow yourself to rest, listen to music, and have some hobbies or activities to keep you inspired. Enjoy the things that bring you joy high, sober.

Maybe I am psyching myself out, but I feel a slight improvement this week. I am so excited to see what life is like on the other side of the veil. I have already got a glimpse.

Inmigración: Las injusticias de ayer no desaparecen con el tiempo, sino que regresan cada vez que la gente deja de defender la igualdad

It's no surprise that Texas and Arkansas are dealing with the fallout from their messed-up housing market. The story of Tijuana is also tied to the history of Mexicans on the other side of the border. Back in the early 20th century, in several states across the U.S., especially Texas, a lot of Mexicans faced discrimination, segregation, violence, and even lynchings just for being labeled "colored" or inferior under the laws and biases of the time.
Remembering that past isn’t about creating divides, but about understanding the journey our communities have gone through. Tijuana is a border city where the histories of Mexico and Mexicans in the U.S. come together. Knowing those stories helps us value human dignity, stand up for equality, and make sure that hatred and discrimination don't happen again.
Historical memory isn't there to stir up resentment; it’s about reinforcing justice, respect, and unity among current and future generations.

I feel weird

I stopped last week after 40 years of smoking. I have some left because I see it as a test of my will power. I don't have much more than the habitual urge to smoke, like automatic, but no strong craving. I do feel dizzy, brain fog, my sleeping patterns are bad but they always have been. I feel how I feel when I smoked too much. Like I cant focus on anything and I just want to be in bed.

I am a pro musician but I dont have the focus to practice and my performance is suffering.

I feel like I may have some other medical issues, like dry face and lips, crusty eyes.

I might go to the doctor if this persists. It is hard to know if these are side effects from stopping or just a coincidence.

I feel like I have hot dog water going through my veins.

I plan to continue letting my body re callabrate.

When people simply put 'Title' in the text field of their reddit post.

I would prefer they just cut and paste the title into the text field because it looks better to me.

Does it really matter? No, it's a pet peeve.

Fall by Wayne Shorter from Nefertiti.

Has anyone taken a dive into this one? Every chart has conflicting chord symbols. It seems like Ron Carter is improvising the bass and herbie is being creative on the chords, leaving transcribers to choose different chords.

What is the key (not the musical key) to unlock this impressionistic piece. You just play whatever you are feeling that doesn't clash too much with the melody? I would love to see the original chart from the session.

Maybe I have to not pay close attention to the literal chords, and just lay back in the vibe. I also want to take a shot at playing bass on this.

I am just going to listen to this song 7 million times until I understand it without having to focus on it.

Why do I struggle to be musically productive in the day?

I am a working musician, and it is the slow season, 2 gigs a week, so I have a lot of time to learn, write, practice, etc, but for some reason I just fuck around all day, cook, do a chore, water plants, peruse the internet, and I don't actually get to music until well after sunset. Even when I really want to work on stuff during the day, I just fuck off my whole day. Then I stay up till 3 am doing music. How do you break that habit?

Postres time - Vasco con Roles

This postre is called Vasco con Roles. It’s a Basque‑style cheesecake topped with a cinnamon roll (roles de canela) with a cream in between.

I seriously practice Jazz guitar but it's not my favorite

In my defense, I don't really have favorites.

I "play" guitar "professionally", mostly latin and regional music, but I always play with jazz in mind, improvising solos, being creative with the arrangements and chords.

At home I study and practice jazz. But when I put on a record just to enjoy, it's rarely a jazz guitarist. I am attracted to woodwind and brass sounds, bass, drums, the piano or keyboard, that's what inspires me. I am trying to figure out how to do what the piano can do, or the horns, with the guitar. I am not trying to sound like a jazz guitar. It doesn't make sense since I choose to study the craft.

Don't get me wrong, I put on Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Grant Green, and others, have my mind blown. But at the end of they day, I don't want to play like them.

I am very inspired by Joe Pass because his solo work is like classical guitar, how he plays all the different roles, the bass, horns, guitar, the orchestra. I guess I am proving myself wrong because I am inspired by that. Like Andrés Segovia, one of my guitar heros. Wes is just so smooth. I dream to have even a wisp of that coolness.

At the end of the I love Jazz guitar but it feels weird that jazz guitar records are not my go to.

Reddit promotions that look like organic posts

They almost got me.

I saw a post on my feed that resonated with me. I thought I had some real perspective to add and started typing a well thought out post. After carefully writing three paragraphs I said, wait. Why is there a more info call to action style link at the bottom of the post. That's when I see the promotion tag. Dammit! I almost made a comment on an ad.

It was a weird feeling, like second-hand embarrassment for myself. My excuse is, my glasses broke and I am wearing my old, blurry script, so I missed the promotions tag, but dang, eff those ads.

Now I wish someone would make that post for real so I can rewrite the damn piece.

The earliest example of a Valley Girl I could find in popular culture

How ever you feel about it, Val Speak has had a huge effect on popular culture since the song "Valley Girl", a song actually mocking the Valley lifestyle, dropped.

It seems like a core Gen X thing but it looks like the boomers can take credit for this one. It still seems relevant to Gen X, but like much of our culture, we took a lot from our late boomer siblings, cousins, neighbors, aunts, and uncles. Like skateboarding, hip-hop, punk rock, and new wave.

SNL Skit from 1978 with a Valley Girl character.

When people go out of their way to pronounce a word borrowed from another language "correctly"

This is for people with native US English accent.

This one only slightly bugs be because it takes me out of the conversation when they do this. It is distracting.

Not a big deal because for some people it may be unconscious or automattic. Also, this doesn't apply to people's names. We should always try and pronounce peoples names as they wish.

For example, an english as a first language youtuber, making a food video might be speaking with an English accent, but switch when saying "tortilla".

Tortilla in English: tor-TEE-yuh

Tortilla in Spanish: tord-TEE-yah

When this started bugging me, I had to think about what I do, as I lead an English/Spanish bilingual life, and I realize I when speaking English I say it with an English accent, and in Spanish I use the Spanish accent. I never really thought about it before about a year ago.

I feel like it is better just to stick the common pronunciation in the language one is using. If it is already pronounced like the original language, like "rendezvous" (closer anyway), piano, or fiesta, I am not talking about that.

This also has nothing to do with if the person has an accent from the language of the borrowed word. This is for people with a native English accent that hard switch on borrowed words.

I feel like this one might get some downvotes, but oh well. It's not like I hate the people for it or wish them misery. I like them, but it just throws me off when they do that.

Incorrect convex soap bar placement

One of my truly petty peeves is improper placement of a convex soap bar on the soap dish or holder.

You know the convex bars that curve in on one side and have a little belly on the other side? My s/o always places the soap belly down and it drives me crazy. Well, I have gotten to the point where I don't even mention it anymore, I just correct it myself, but I don't get how they just don't get it.

Reasons for the shape:

Ergonomics: The curved belly fits more comfortably in the hand.

Drying: When set on its edge, only the two ends touch the surface, allowing air to circulate underneath so the soap dries faster and doesn’t get mushy.

Aesthetic: The crescent‑like contour makes the bar look more refined compared to a flat block.

For me, it's about the drying, but also the aesthetics. Last time I mentioned it, I brought up that angle, because she agrees that the aesthetics of one's space, can affect the mood, like clutter, and create brain fog. I really thought it would stick with that one, but no such luck. It's a lost cause.

Audience members wanting to sing with the band because it's their favorite song

In my entire life, I have never been to a live music event heard a cover song, and ran to the stage begging to sing with them. That seems so rude and entitled.

As a performing musician that plays a mix of originals, and covers, the amount of times this has happened is staggering.

This is not karaoke. If you like, start your own band, practice, acquire gigs and be amazing, then maybe we can open for you.

The few times we have let someone sing, it was always a drunk mess of missed cues and forgotten lyrics.
