How to prevent .gitignore from being tracked itself

This sounds stupid but it's driving me crazy, I'm new to working collaboratively with git.

I'm using VS code to work on a project hosted on github. Git will always track the .gitignore file itself and therefore my remote `main` on github always shows me as being one commit ahead of the project I forked, which then is always prompting me to make a pull request of course

Has to be something simple I'm missing

Entra shenanigans

Rant is too strong a word for a post with this much whimsy, it doesn't bother me any more because I've been through similar scenarios with Microsoft support a lot at this point. Just needed to find someone who would appreciate how farcical it is

I went back and forth with MS customer service for about a month, one of our users just lost access to Office. Could log in to the web app but desktop didn't exist anymore. Installing from the company portal just says "pending"

> Make a ticket

> "Send us screenshots" (multiple over the course of days bc time zone difference)

> Literally "i made a mistake: for security purposes can you reupload to this link instead of sending by email"

> "I already emailed them yesterday, there's also no data displayed"

>"Ok" :)

> Have to remind them a couple days later because they forgot about the screenshots I sent at their request (?) and asked me if they could "go ahead and close this ticket"

> What do you mean lol

> Fast forward, they give me a Bunch of Stuff to Try

> Try It

> I say it didn't work, give them details

> A couple days later they ask for an update

> What do you mean lol *I'm* the one waiting for *you*

> Same thing, they just check back in a couple days later asking if they can close the ticket

> As little will left as I have at this point, I recap pretty firmly in a reply that they've asked me for screenshots, reviewed them without feedback, forgotten about the issue (?) suggested closing the ticket more than once, etc

> "Let's set up a video call"

> This is gonna suck but I appreciate the call because at this point it's the only possibility for progress.

> Steal user's office for a one hour time chunk (how optimistic), log in to admin portal and teams on his computer

> I dial into the meeting, there's one person there. I say "hello"

> ~The host has ended the call~

> I get an email asking for feedback now that my ticket has been closed and resolved

> Lol what

Gmail alternative: my experience with Thundermail early bird release so far

I originally switched to Proton and had just enough issues with their ecosystem that I was open to alternatives.

I left Gmail web client for IMAP in Thunderbird I caught wind of them offering Thundermail, their own mail service, so I signed up for the Early Bird release. Full release is this year I believe and I'm curious if anyone else in here is using it yet

So far it's been very good. The suite right now is the Thundermail mail service, secure file transfer with Send, scheduling with Appointment, and native integration into Thunderbird; webmail is almost finished.

  • E2E mail
  • European hosing
  • Platform agnostic (use whatever mail client you want)
  • Completely open source
  • IMAP and newer protocol JMAP support
  • Unlimited domain aliases
  • 15 normal aliases
  • @ thundermail.com and @ tb.pro domains
  • unlimited cardDav and calDav creation on their servers
  • Using Stalwart
  • "Send" currently supports 30GB of storage for encrypted file sharing, no limit to upload size, and allows you to choose optional password and optional expiration date; recipient gets a formatted and branded link to a web portal to download what you've shared or view what you've shared with them previously if you chose to keep it stored. These can all be saved and managed from a dashboard on your end.
  • "Appointment" integrates the default calendar you get when signing up and optionally any Gmail/Outlook/calDav/whatever calendars you have and gives you a web portal to manage appointments; you get an embedded link to send to people so that they can schedule with you in a similar way to Calendly etc, and you can choose to enable Zoom integration so the recipient also gets an autogenerated meeting link and password without any manual setup required, although you can choose to set it up manually.

Things that are being talked about to implement shortly:

  • Server side filtering with Sieve, Sieve sounds like it will have manual setup + UI frontend
  • Appointment will most likely expand to offer optional integration with Teams, Google Meet, etc
  • Appointment will allow for booking with multiple recipients instead of one-on-one (automatic scheduling)
  • Expanding Send to include file storage, and expanding said file storage to include file collaboration a la Google Docs/Sheets
  • Obviously tiers for different storage amounts etc

Other things I like:

It's completely open source and development is also completely community driven. There is a public ideas board for voting and then progress updates when development starts on highly-voted features.

There are monthly community hours videos to talk features and requests and progress. There's a ton of feedback options: so far I've had an invite to a video call on feedback for the service, the option to sign up for an online exercise that measures how important some of the planned new features are and where they should be placed/designed, there are topicbox chats and Matrix channels for support and feedback on the Early Bird program.

And obviously I like the ideals behind the Thunderbird team to begin with: to each their own but I *do* factor things like that in when I pick my software as long as I have the option, although not everyone has to. They've also been doing email for like two decades so I have some faith there lol

Just figured I'd type something up about how it's been since I haven't seen many people talking about it in this sub and I've mentioned it in comments here a couple times.

Emails are switched to a mix of their domains and my domains, contacts and calendars are now hosted there and synced to Fossify Contacts/Calendar on my phone

Only things I still need: a VPN and a password manager lol

Contacts list - display organization and title fields?

Regarding the contacts list:

in Settings > List View, there are options to display contact names + phone numbers; display with surname first; and show contact thumbnails.

How possible would it be to add the option to display organization and title in the contacts list as well?

Not sure if feature requests are discussed here or not, or if this functionality has been mentioned before. Just wondered if there had ever been talk of if being implemented

What was the name of that old website that told stories about dismal software failures and facepalms?

I can't remember the name of it!

It's old by now and was very popular. People would submit content into one of a few categories and it would be like a medium length blog post of some huge programming facepalm that someone either accidentally committed, encountered, or got stuck fixing someone else's

They were just stories people submitted and it was hilarious and I can't believe I can't remember what it was called.

All I can think of is coding horror, which is most definitely not it lol, that's Jeff Atwood's blog which is also phenomenal. I feel like the name is in that vein though, as you could guess by the description of the website I'm trying to remember

Help me out!

Guidance on persisting a single-line single-file CSS change to modify the vertical view -> card view -> message list

My own card view is a little cramped and I noticed on the Thunderbird website it's displayed with gutters a little wider and more relaxed and with rounded corners. I'm assuming the design has just changed over time (v 140 displayed on website vs my current release version 150.0.1)

The colored bar on the website is a nice aesthetic but I also like the current sparkling icon that indicates an unread message, so I'm less interested in changing that.

But I'm after those rounded edges and wider gutters on either end of the list view if possible.

I started the Thunderbird dev tools and have gotten this far:

https://preview.redd.it/sg5uaqbhgx5h1.png?width=2555&format=png&auto=webp&s=063b3220282858adfbc99ffb02ee27ac6f1bb7a9

Scrolled through until the element I wanted was highlighted (in this case the entire thread view) and despite the warning that "border-spacing has no effect on this element since it's not a table," changing this from 0 to 6px gets me pretty close to where I want to be:

https://preview.redd.it/dl8dxhb1lx5h1.png?width=637&format=png&auto=webp&s=b74c90de803e2dc70ef93d0ee58f026eba2c2869

That changes the padding all around the individual email, which is good: I get the desired vertical space between individual emails, and some desired horizontal spacing between the left and right edges of each individual email.

I still need to explore more and find a property that will allow me to change only the horizontal spacing on left and right of individual emails and keep the vertical gap between them the same as it is with this change, and I still need to explore how to round the edges off, but I'm pretty happy with just this change at the moment.

Opening that tree-listbox.css in the style editor shows me the file I probably want to keep exploring:

https://preview.redd.it/gi80o13zjx5h1.png?width=2550&format=png&auto=webp&s=41a8778906a5173d0b7285aa031184dccf1d0796

So here I am on line 319, disappointing front-end developers everywhere by arbitrarily trial-and-erroring random css properties until I see Something Good Happen.

My question is, how do I persist this change? I know about adding a chrome/ directory to my Thunderbird profile with a userChrome.css file, but I don't know what hierarchy to include in the file if that's the term I'm looking for, like how much context I need to include in order to override that one line in that one file. I'd like to do it in the most robust way possible, by pretending (strongly lol) that this change is a significant UI modification across multiple files and lines, so that in the future I know how to do it and organize it the correct way

I'm sorry to be a little hand-holdy with this request. I'd be appreciative of any background information related to how changes like this are organized over time ie when someone builds a theme for Thunderbird, or really any advice on navigating the css structure of Thunderbird from people much more knowledgeable than me!

Learning css is on a list for me which will definitely give me some much-needed context when looking through these files but front-end is pretty far off for me still, at least not this summer

How are contact pictures handled as part of email protocols, and why is support so inconsistent across different mail clients and providers?

I've learned a lot more about email since buying a domain and trying a couple different mail providers.

There are two types of contact pictures:

  1. From an address book that I have synced, in my case Google Contacts address book

  2. Pictures that must be set by the sender somehow, ie businesses whose contact information I don't have saved to an address book

Contact pictures from non-contacts:

Proton - displays contact pictures rom businesses whose contact info I don't have

Gmail - only displays these from some, but Proton displays more

Thunderbird (desktop and android): does not display any contact pictures

Contact pictures from address books:

Proton - doesn't show any contact pictures from address books

Gmail - shows contact pictures from my address books

Thunderbird - desktop shows contact pictures from my address book, android does not

So how does this all work? Please note that I'm not asking for advice on how to use or configure these specific apps or services, but rather *why* it works for some clients and not all

I'm further confused by the fact that it seems like other people can have contact pictures set that you receive whether they're in your address book or not, the same way the emails from some businesses come through

Example: if I get mail from Mozilla or Thunderbird or my bank, I see logos as contact pictures for them in Proton, I don't see any contact pictures for them in Thunderbird desktop or mobile, and I only see contact picture for my bank im Gmail, but not for Thunderbird and Mozilla

And with my limited understanding of email protocols I don't understand how support for contact pictures can even exist but obviously it does, just looking to learn more about how this works.

What part does the mail service play in it?

What part does the mail client play in it?

Why do contact pics show from some recipients but not others inconsistently across clients and services?

And most importantly, how do you set everything up on your end to ensure you're getting contact pictures from everyone consistently?

Python closures: need some help understanding why this function within a closure doesn't have to be declared as nonlocal in order to work

First time learning about closures, I'm following along on a Udemy course and of course the one stumbling block is the one thing the very thorough course didn't double back on.

The example provided in the video is to make a closure that can be passed another function when called. It will take the two variables that were called by the original function and return the result of the original function but it will also increment a cnt variable to track how many times that function has been callled.

In the video, add() and mult() are just functions set up as:

>def add(a, b)
return a + b

The closure:

counters = dict()

--def counter(fn):

--cnt = 0

----def inner (*args, **kwargs):

----nonlocal cnt

----cnt += 1

----counters[fn.__name__] = cnt

----return fn(*args, **kwargs)

--return inner

So I understand what it does, and I understand that cnt is part of the closure, and we're making sure of that by using the nonlocal keyword.

If we didn't use the nonlocal keyword, then the cnt within the inner function's definition would be assumed to be a new variable, as opposed to the cnt in the counter function's definition (which is what we want)

What I don't understand:

Why does just writing return fn(*args, **kwargs) work? Why don't we need to tell Python that that fn variable is nonlocal?

Also, if I'm using any incorrect terminology here I'd appreciate if someone corrected me

Looking for ways to improve Firefox and get an idea of why people might opt for Firefox over alternatives that seem more full-featured out of the box, in my case Vivaldi

I was a lifelong Firefox user for a long time, but have been on Google chrome for a while now. Started trying different browsers as I'm mostly looking for privacy and lack of AI.

So I switched to Vivaldi and it's pretty incredible, I like the customization and power user aspect, ton of aesthetics you can change and some functionality you can change as well.

But as a big Mozilla fan due to their alleged mission statements, and as someone who would love to see real alternatives to chromium get big, I decided to check out Firefox. With Vivaldi offering so much, and other browsers looking like they offer a good mix of functionality, novelty, and aesthetics, I figured Firefox would be pretty competitive in this area

And I tried it today and it really doesn't look like it is. The main reason I wanted to go to Firefox was due to it being open source, I didn't know Vivaldi wasn't. The fact that Vivaldi doesn't sync (most) settings between instances is super annoying too. Some stuff syncs between my two home PCs and work PC but not all of it, which is almost worse than none of it syncing.

So my question to you is: am I missing something in terms of customization or is this it? And for those who use Firefox as their main, what's keeping you there?

Stupid SSH question about copying keys I had on Windows over to Linux - denied (publickey) and unable to connect

So I set up an Ubuntu VPS when I was using Windows; when I installed Linux Mint on my system I copied the local keys II had via google drive, and had a feeling copy pasting them wouldn't work

I ran the ssh command alone on Linux and it generated my .ssh directory for me, pasted the keys from Windows in there

ssh [IP address] myusername@mydomain.com gives me an error "permission denied (publickey)

The two files I copied over to my .ssh folder are id_ed25519 and id_ed25519.pub

Then I look on my server and the files in that .ssh directory, which I never really looked in, are:

ssh_host_ecdsa_key ssh_host_ecdsa_key.pub ssh_host_ed25519_key ssh_host_ed25519_key.pub ssh_host_rsa_key ssh_host_rsa_key.pub

Why so many there, what's the difference between them, and what am I missing locally that I'm unable to connect?

New to this, probably misunderstanding the whole process if someone can help out

Any more notification settings available, am I missing something? And where do app icons live to associate them with a certain notification?

I've seen even Mint documentation refer to having more options to configure notifications per app, but this is all I have for anything, this is the full depth of my notifications options.

Just looking for more customization, there are a lot of apps I don't want notifications from.

I'm also going to copy something I posted elsewhere; where do the icons for these notifications live? I get app icons in the notification pop up for everything except Thunderbird, which I installed myself not through package manager/flatpak etc. How do I associate the Thunderbird icon to display when I get notifications from Thunderbird? It just shows what looks like the generic fall back icon, a light bulbl

Where do icons for programs sending push notifications live on linux Mint, and how can I point that notification system to the correct icon? Thunderbird notifications don't have an icon unlike my other applications

https://preview.redd.it/mttzwnm03x0h1.png?width=604&format=png&auto=webp&s=1cceedac071d697beff35d68f8510a4ec5b33780

So I'm on Linux Mint and I notice that unlike other applications, Thunderbird doesn't have an icon when I get system push notifications in the upper-right corner of the screen. It seems like that light bulb is a generic icon for applications that don't have their own

My Thunderbird was installed as a tar from their website, not a flatpak or through package manager, and I had to download an icon along with it and place it in /usr/share/applications and /usr/local/share/applications in order to have a desktop icon and system panel/taskbar icon

Wondering where these icons for push notifications live and how I can point them to my Thunderbird icon, and then how to associate that icon to Thunderbird notifications

Confused - I don't know if this is a Thunderbird thing or a Gmail thing, has anyone here had something similar happen? Slow messages, syncing broken, long waits to copy to sent folder/receive mail

Latest Linux Mint release, latest Thunderbird (the release distribution, not from a ppa or flatpak)

I've had Thunderbird working fine for a while now with a personal gmail account and a google workspace account for work. Very fast. I have that two-email set up both on my home computer and on my work computer.

I come home from work today and fire Thunderbird up and my whole message list is zooming past my screen in my inbox as if it were downloading every message in my account again.

Problem

I then notice I can't click any mail to read it, either nothing shows up in the reading pane, or the content from a message from years ago shows up in the reading pane when clicking on a current message.

This happens in my sent and inbox folders, but not my drafts or spam folders.

Try to re-add account, try to re-install Thunderbird

I mess with this for so long that I eventually just remove the account and re-add it, which changes nothing. As in, it says it's added but just never syncs, no status bar log, nothing.

This entire time, my other account, the google workspaces one, is working fast with no problems.

I give up, remove Thunderbird completely, reinstall it. I only add my personal account back first. It takes everything a very long time to sync. When it finally does, I send some test emails.

Weird behavior with the test emails

Outgoing mail: when I send from my newly re-added personal account on my newly re-installed Thunderbird client, my gmail web/gmail android get the message almost immediately...but Thunderbird hangs on "copying to sent folder" for a very long time, like about 3 minutes.

Incoming mail: I send an email to my Thunderbird/personal email from my phone at 930. The personal address logged in on my phone receives the message at 930. The same address in Thunderbird doesn't receive the email until 934, but when it pops up at 934 the timestamp says it was received at 930.

Moving messages to spam takes about as long

tl;dr messages send fine, but take a very long time to send, just as they take a very long time to be received and to move around. I figured this was an issue with the gmail end, but seeing as my messages are being sent/received on time everywhere else, I don't know if it's more like a Thunderbird + Gmail problem, and I'm hoping that someone here knows something that I missed.

Added my work account just now and sending and receiving is perfectly fine, nice and fast. Just the personal email account that's messed up.

Console: 92 warnings about not valid URIs in various js files, and a csp google com being repeatedly blocked by OpaqueResponseBlocking.

7 errors, pictured

Help understanding fans/temp sensors/sensors in general; where do they live, and why are they not showing up for me in sensors and xsensors?

Linux Mint latest (installed yesterday); trying to understand which sensors are which, some values not populating for temps; fan and voltage sensors not found. I have poor knowledge of hardware

tl;dr - xsensors and sensors return the same output for 7 devices below and I'm not sure which are which; high temp and critical temp that show when running each command don't populate in the GUI. Neither app returns anything about voltage or more importantly about fan sensors. The directory given by one of the GUI apps, where it's trying to look for CPU temp, doesn't exist, and in the closest directory that does exist on that path, the info about hardware seems limited and doesn't contain temps, so maybe I'm in the wrong spot, but not aware of where I should be looking for temps and fan speeds.

Long version, what I've tried -

So I have a Sensors Monitor app that sits in my taskbar and reads temps, fans, and voltage. It populates a list of each when I click "renew list of sensors."

  1. I don't know which sensors are which here

  2. It looks like not all the data is read. If I run the sensors command in a terminal I can see that everything has a high and low temp defined; in the Sensors Monitor GUI, I get the same exact output but High and Critical don't populate, and I don't think that's by design. What could be the issue there?

  3. No entries populate for fans or voltage. I don't know where these live after trying to look for them, but strange that wherever this is pulling from isn't finding them, right?

  4. Again I can't really tell which of these sensors corresponds to which hardware, but I don't think my CPU temp sensor is in there.

So, there's a second program called System Temperature that only shows CPU temp, just a small widget basically, and it errors for not being able to find it. This program actually shows where it's trying to pull from: /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone2/temp , so I'm able to try to dig.

That directory doesn't exist, but /sys/class/thermal does. If I go there in a file explorer, I find directories for cooling_device0 - cooling_device29, which look like they're all symlinks to /sys/devices/virtual/thermal/cooling_device0

Reading the "type" files in these directories says that cooling_device0 through cooling_device15 are PCIE_Port_Link type, and the remainder are Processor type

But that's all the information I'm able to glean, there's no information about temp anywhere in there.

  1. I can't find any information about fans. Everything xsensors returns is the same as what sensors returns:

mt7921_phy0

spd5118

nvme

r8169_0_c00:00

spd5118

k10temp

nvme

and about all I know there is that both nvme are my two SSDs.

Almost all external ports, USB and ethernet, stopped working and I don't know why

Windows 11, pre built MSI I've had for about two years

Restarted my computer and when I booted into Windows I plugged in a USB C flash drive to flash a Linux distro on. Use easeus partition manager to write it, it took forever, like half an hour.

Finishes at 97% with "error writing partition." Weird.

Then I realize it's not being recognized by Windows at all anymore. I unplug my keyboard (different USB C slot) to try the drive there, not recognized, as in no indication of it even being plugged in.

Plug my keyboard back in...and it doesn't even power on. Not recognized. Try a manner of devices on all my USB 2 and 3 ports, nothing is recognized, oddly mouse still works through its USB receiver, I'm thinking because I didn't unplug it/replug it during this.

...then I notice I don't have Internet despite my Ethernet cable being plugged in.

Restart the computer, luckily everything USB comes back online. But no Ethernet. To the extent that now, I don't even get the usual flashing green light in the ethernet port. Before the restart, it registered the cable but said there was no Internet connection. Now after restart, it says there's not even an Ethernet cable plugged in.

Try the "restart the Ethernet network adapter" in the Network Settings troubleshooting menu, no change. Says there's no cord plugged in and no flashing green light in the ethernet port.

Wi-Fi works fine

Strangely enough, when I go into Network Settings and click on ethernet, it just shows it's disabled. Re-enable it, everything works now.

What in the world happened here? Ethernet works fine now, USB ports all work fine now, flash drives are recognized.

What would happen that would cause: ethernet to disable but appear as an error vs just being manually disabled from settings, all USB ports 2, 3, and C to completely lose connection and even power over USB?

Looking for a keyboard navigation app on linux

There's an app I have installed called Fluent Search, you can key bind it and when triggered it will list two-character boxes on every single clickable item on-screen: in apps, file explorers, all websites, tabs, search bars, everything. It's invaluable.

You hit your trigger key to show the overlay below, then hit your two-character combo that's over whichever element you want to click. If you start typing the combo LK, then once you type L everything that doesn't start with L is filtered out.

You can even prefix your two-character combo with a number: 1 is the same thing, just a normal single click. 2 is a double click. 3 is a right click, etc.

So if I wanted to select text, I could click 2, AB for example and whatever was at box AB would be double clicked and highlighted.

Does anything like this exist in the nix world? Between standard modifier key shortcuts, a qmk board, and this tool I almost don't have to use my mouse at all and I've gotten super used to it.

Problem is I don't even know what to search up, I don't know what *this* is

If it helps I'll probably be going to some flavor of ubuntu and Wayland wm

Desktop, version 7.9.3970.60, Windows

So I'm trying to emulate Chrome's tab behavior: if I'm in one tab with other tabs already active to the right, and I open links in new tabs from the in between tab that I'm in, those new opened tabs will also open in between: we'll call the tab I'm in tab A, the tabs that were already opened to the right of tab A will be D and E, and the links opened in new tabs from there we'll call B...C. The first link opened in a new tab from tab A will be tab B, then the second opened will be tab C and come after B, the third will be tab D. All of these will come before D and be in alphabetical order from A.

After related tabs - this sometimes open in the order I'm looking for, but sometimes will open as the last tab.

After active tab - this is *almost* exactly what I want, but they open in reverse order, ie using the alphabetical example like the above, they would be A (tab I'm in) and then continually opening links in new tabs will go A, C, B, then D, E (tabs that were already open before I started adding) onwards

This is kind of hard to explain without seeing it but if you're familiar with Chrome it's understandable. Again, order I'm looking for is:

A (current tab I'm in) -> B (first link opened in new tab from A) -> C (second link opened in new tab from A) D onward (tabs that were already opened)

But the behavior I'm getting is:

A -> C -> B -> D onward

These really seem like the only options, so I'm hoping someone knows how to change this, maybe there's a config somewhere that can be edited? It's not the biggest deal in the world but I'm surprised it's not an option, messing up my workflow because that's one behavior in Chrome that I'm used to and can't shake

I haven't used any external drives in a long time but recently I plugged a 256gb samsung usb drive into my USB C port to wipe it and back up some data.

I got a bsod, can't remember exactly what it said but it was something like USB power state error. Computer restarted and everything seemed good to go, that was 3 or 4 days ago.

Today, I realized Samsung Magician didn't recognize my external T7 SSD anymore. Weird.

And I needed to back up that data still so I started a transfer and maxed out on read and write at 37mbps.

So I start checking the 256gb Samsung usb stick again, same thing.

I try performance and data transfer scans in Samsung Magician, take forever, come up with the same results.

I updated Windows, went into device manager to enable write caching at an old forum's recommendation, restarted computer, tried everything again. Still topping out at 30 some mbps.

This has been tested on multiple ports (I have a lot) with a generic 1tb flash drive, a Samsung 256gb flashdrive, and the T7 external SSD (2tb)

Important to know that these were all working fine and fast the last time I used any of them a few months ago. External SSD to backup data and the two flash drives to flash recovery images for work computers on

I spent some time looking for Samsung specific drivers for the T7 because the driver it's using looks like a generic driver from 2006, and I couldn't find anything. But now it looks like all USB devices are doing the same thing

EDIT: just checked again and it looks like they're starting around 300mbps for a few seconds, then dropping to 30, then dropping to 5(!) and staying there. The T7 alone used to transfer at like 700mbps

When the T7 is connected, Windows settings says it will perform faster if connected to USB 3.0

When the Samsung flashdrive is connected to the same port, it says it's a 3.0 port...and also only maxes out at 300mbps.. What is going on?

tl;dr Trouble understanding email encryption for a small business. Not looking for a product recommendation, just need some guidance on what different types of encryption exist and how they differ/what our use case would be, and looking for clarification on how much encryption is dependent on the mail provider versus the mail client

We use Google Workspace with Google handling our email and just use gmail web.

We get a lot of one-time-code login portals from external organizations since they're sending encrypted messages.

I was looking into this and read that Gmail doesn't support encrypted emails? With my previous employer we used MS365 and you had an "encrypt" button in Outlook near the sender info on outgoing mail; while working there, I also never received an email from anyone external that required me to enter a one-time passcode and view the email in a separate tab like I do now working for my current employer.

  1. Is there no way for Gmail to have outgoing encryption and automatic incoming decryption?

  2. Is this a google services thing, or could I fix this with a mail client like Canary which states it has HIPAA compliant "Secure send" encryption and PGP? Would accessing our gmail from a different client like this be basically useless since it's still the same mail provider?

  3. What is the difference between TLS and PGP encryption/this Secure Send marketing term Canary is using for "HIPAA compliant encryption?"

  4. Would it make sense to switch to MS365 and ditch Google Workspaces to remedy this issue, or am I misunderstanding mail provider/mail client and misunderstanding what MS and Google offer/don't offer? We already have the suite as our device manager in addition to the G Workspace suite.

Context is important here, we're a small healthcare facility so we should probably have the most secure communication possible
