I recently finished a little minigame I've been working on over the last couple months as sort of a little break between bigger projects. I wanted to make a fun little game that could be endless, like those old arcade games where the objective is to get a high score.

A few years ago I had the idea of making a game based off of my wife. She was getting into roller blading at the time, and it was kind of funny watching her try to figure out how to skate backwards while wearing a huge pink helmet and pink roller blades. Combine that with her unhealthy love of coke and her equally unhealthy fear of chickens, and BOOM. RollerGabe was born.

The game is available to download as a .gbc rom at vorvy.itch.io, with a free demo and a full version. It's fully playable on original hardware if you want to put it on a flash cart! The free demo is also playable in the browser, if you want to try it out first (the WR is 153, if you can beat that I'll post it to the itch page!) Last year my friend loaned me his childhood Game Boy (I was using it as a reference for some paintings I was doing at the time). It was broken, the plastic screen kept falling off, it was clearly well loved but ultimately ended up collecting dust for awhile. So as a surprise, I wanted to give it a nice upgrade so it can have a new life. He also has three kids now, and I think it'd be an awesome thing for them to experience too when they're old enough.

Anyway, since his favorite color combo is blue and black, that's what I went with. I was shooting for a sleeker look. Combine that with the back-lit IPS screen, and I think this thing looks beautiful, it makes me want to make one for myself ha. Just wanted to share it with you all. I was thinking of making a short, personal game to go with it that would have a bunch of call-backs and references to when he and I were teenagers and the stuff we used to do together.

For this project I really wanted to focus on the attention to detail, so I hope all the music, animations, vibrancy, and sound fx really makes for a cutesy, quirky little game.
