IJN tips and essentials for a new player?

Hello everyone, as the title says I’m a new player to Victory at Sea having played both Bolt Action and Warhammer 40K. I recently split the starter box with a friend of mine and got the Japanese half and I also used a birthday gift card to pick up a Kongo battleship. I chose the Kongo just because I think the superstructure looks cool and remember it from this game I used to play growing up called Battle Stations Pacific on the Xbox 360. However, with growing my fleet in the future, I was just wondering what some essentials or even just some fun ships to use with the Japanese. I know they get a special torpedo, but I don’t know how to play them or what the best way to play them is and I am also interested in what is the glue that holds your fleet together?

Also, I was wondering as a new player what is the typical point size for a regular game?

Our Terminators should’ve been Cataphractii or Tartaros pattern instead of Indomitus

It would’ve made them more visually distinct from the loyalist terminators. It also would’ve better emphasized that “veteran of the long war” feel. Yes, it’s more difficult to produce than Indomitus pattern. But they could’ve just waved it away and said the dark mechanicum either kept the design or modified it by putting a demon in its ass or something.

My Hungarian HQs for Bolt Action

!!!Disclaimer!!! Hungary fought with the Axis and were fascists I figured being a minor power was the most ethical way to play “the bad guys” for Bolt Action.

I am very pleased with how they turned out, especially the uniforms as I was going off the pictures on Warlords website and think I got them fairly close. The main commanding officer and the spotter are by far my two most favorite sculpts out of the four that come in the box. I love the leather jacket, mustache, and pin on the CO’s hat they were very fun details to paint. As for the spotter, I enjoyed painting the camo on the jacket or parka that he’s wearing and also just the pose.

I’ll be painting the Mace Thrower or my Panther next. And if you have any tips about playing Hungarians or what some of their most “fun” units are, feel free to share.

Starting Hungary (Help with infantry)

Hello, I’m currently planning out my 2nd Bolt Action army (my first being Soviets) and really really want to play Hungary. Our group already has an Imperial Japan and Germany player and I thought doing a minor axis power would be fun. My mother’s family is also Hungarian and immigrated to the U.S. in the 1930s before the war so I figured why not.

I have recently run into an issue however as all of Warlords Hungarian infantry are metal and 40-50$ for a box of 10 heavy models is just not worth it. At first I tried checking if Wargames Atlantic or anyone else might make Hungarian Honved but it seems like no one else does. That leaves me kitbashing as the only way to get a decent amount of infantry for relatively cheap. I’m planning a late war force that mostly revolves around a Panther. So, I was wondering if it was best to mix veteran Germans (shaving off the helmet bands) and mixing in a few German Grenadiers for a little variety?

Here is my list that I’m working on

Hungary - Hungary - Generic - 1249 points

==== Rifle Platoon ====

Alpha Legion Mutilators

Glad to have finally finished my Mutilators as they were an early gift from a friend for my birthday. They even did 22 wounds to a Knight Castigator during their first game after a legendary 10” charge. I have been rushing to finish them since that game.

Anyone else enjoying Deceptors + Devotees of Destruction so far?

I must admit as someone who hated Deceptors in 10th being able to use it in 11th now that it’s only 2DP has boosted its utility A LOT for me personally. Currently I am 5-2 with 11th edition, all from running DEC+DoD and have been having the time of my life.

For Deceptors I tend to bring
- Two 10x cultist blobs to sticky the midfield
- Two 5x melee legionary blobs for a little punchy melee
- One 6x squad of Red Corsair Reavers (I call them Headhunters) with the Reave Captain to be a mini infiltrating Chosen blob.

For Devotees of Destruction
- One squad of Obliterators
- Two Havoc squads with lascannons and autocannons
- Lastly the Helbrute ties these all together by giving them both sustained and lethals on their Dark Pact

Havocs and Obliterators suddenly now hitting on 2’s with heavy has greatly improved my usually lackluster shooting phase. I usually run a Vindicator or Predator with my Death Star shooting blob even if they don’t get heavy just to get the Helbrutes buff. So far, I’ve been able to both effectively control the midfield and deny deep strike by spacing my army out right and eliminate any big threats from a safe range away with my shooting blob. I was easily able to wipe out my friends Repulsor Executioner (something I usually struggled with in 10th) in one turn with this squad.

I have also been enjoying the enhancements from Deceptors too. I’ve been running a Chaos Lord with Cursed Fang for free [Precision] and give my Reave Captain [Soul Link] and linking him to the Chaos Lord. I run the sword on my RC so he becomes an 8 attack, sustained and lethals, 2 damage beast for a turn.

But yeah just wanted to see if anyone else is running this combo! It’s been a lot of fun and it’s nice to actually use my legion detachment for once instead of Renegade Raiders or PBZ.

Imagifier I painted for my SO

Currently getting my SO into 40K and they liked Sister of Battle the most I let them pick out a model off the shelf and painted her up. I hope she pleases the Emperor and it’s the first loyalist I’ve painted in a minute.

Thoughts on my attempt at a competitive Soviet list?

Thoughts on my competitive Soviet BoltAction list? My group usually plays casual games however recently we got the idea of hosting our own little basement tournament with a 3d printed trophy and everything. It is an any period allowed tournament so EW, MW, and LW are allowed and the other teams / nations are Imperial Japan, German Grenadiers, Marines, and U.S. Airborne. I don’t know what’s the META at the moment as far as specific units or faction specific units but I’d be happy to learn so I can improve my list. Thank you for any feedback!

How would you rework [Deceptors] for 11th edition?

It is no secret that Deceptors is one of the least played as well as least effective chaos space marine detachments in 10th edition. I think I can count on my hand the number of times I have used or played this detachment. Instead, I usually run pact bound zealots or renegade raiders. Getting to forward deploy cultists and legionnaires, while interesting, is just not worth the lack of utility following the deployment phase. I don’t even think the strategems are all that bad they’re actually a lot of fun as are the enhancements you can give out to certain characters. I remember Soul Linking my MOE to my Chaos Lord in one of the few games I played with this detachment to absolutely snipe a friends Warlord. But compared to our options in 8th and 9th edition 10th edition really feels like we fell flat. How would you fix Deceptors in 11th to make it more viable and playable? Personally I’d just like to see -1 to hit outside of 12” again but I’d like to hear others’ thoughts.

Home Objective Terrain Ideas?

Hello battle brothers and sisters, my hobby group is preparing for 11th with a fun home objective hobby challenge. Basically all of my group members are all making one 7”x11.5” terrain piece out of arts and crafts themed around our own specific army. I’m having a hard time thinking of one that could be Alpha Legion specific and would love any help or ideas you all would be willing to provide. Thank you for any ideas, and Hydra Dominatus!

Altera really improved the engines on the new Tadpole!!!

As a paying Altera debtor I can really appreciate the innovation of the Tadpole over the Seamoth! It really shows the company values efficiency and performance. Now I can collect resources across the map 5x faster!
