Okay, time to admit I am getting old. Need to buy DJ controller, the 1200s may need to live at home.

Your suggestions wanted!!

So I am a recently returnee DJing hobbyist, regular gig at my LRS and the occasional party. I typically use a pair of 1200s with Phase controllers and a Numark Scratch mixer to do a mix of vinyl and files via Serato Pro. Pretty happy with this setup.

I am also no longer 20, broke my neck (not as dramatic as it sounds, but I was left with permanent neck damage and bits of bone floating around) in a car wreck many years ago and between that and a youth full of tearing my body badly, have a lingering chronic pain problem. In short me hauling 1200s and LPs in flight cases up several flights is wandering into “you are a f@&$ing moron” territory.

Time for me to act like an adult. I am looking to pick up a reasonably cheap controller to try it out and see how much I hate it, say under $400. Will probably go for used via eBay. Kid 1 starts college in 2 weeks the other is a junior in HS and my wife grew up in the depression, kidding, but frivolous spending is a no go.

I’ve looked at a handful of the very shiny and impressive new things one can find at the average Guitar Center, but I am not quite ready to drop $1500 and frankly many of them seem 95% glitz 5% function.

I’m not hugely into using seratos looping, do use the effects functions here and there and awkwardly will do a bit of scratching after a few beverages. I prefer tech that feels solid and well made, but know I am coming in via the basement.

Mostly I want to see what people are using that works with present day serato pro. I don’t want to buy it and find it isn’t supported.

Bonus if there is a controller that allows TT/usb for phase, inputs as well. I can think of running to do with 2 channels of vinyl 2 channels of files all mixable, or 4 of files. This is an aspirational concern, mostly worried about the basics.

What did I break?

My HP Omen has been reduced to doing a couple tasks only. It has the software/security/magic spells to log in to a county system when I help out my local tax assessor in helping people file property tax appeals. . It has really frustrating monitor cable issues and I coax it on and leave it be.

Because of this, I have opened it up many times to prod at cables. However, today I did collateral damage. The good news is it is on, the backlight is working on the monitor, and it all seems fine….but…. I broke something. See the attached image. It is near the hinge in the center of an Omen 17-CB1xxx.

What is it, is it missing critical and if I get out my magnifier and try and solder the part back on will the heat cook anything important?

I am moderately decent at soldering although this is VERY fine work.

Noise toaster Eurorack faceplate?

One of the weird things about returning to interests I had to set aside due to life/work/kids/etc is the treasure hunt arceology of it all.

I knew I had a few PCBs that I bought back in the day and I have been hunting for them for awhile now. Yesterday I found a box and inside was the PCB and parts kit for a noise toaster purchased in 2013. Looking forward to building it.

I have seen eurorack builds for this, does anyone know offhand where I can buy a front panel and maybe some kit/schematic to power the 9v NT with the 12volt eurorack power?

All I’ve been able to find is assembled versions for eurorack, but not kits or parts. No panel on the MFOS site unless I dumbly missed it.

Thanks!

My HS football player son and creatine. Best/safest brands?

I have a 16 yo son who is a high school football player. He has been wanting to take creatine as a part of his weight lifting program. He is a defensive player and they want as much weight and muscle mass as possible. He is 6’4” 225lbs, eats healthy, excercises at great length and is a far better behaved child than I deserve considering the young hoodlum I was as a lad.

We have been hesitant about supplements etc. because he, like a surprising number of people, was born with only one kidney (apparently one of the most common…. I’m sure they don’t call them birth defects any more…whatever the proper term is). He is in excellent health. We have discussed it with his primary care physician who has given creatine use in his case the thumbs up with rules “remember more is not better”, follow instructions, don’t mix without other supplements without asking first.

The issue is I could not possibly know less about this topic beyond reading a ton of opinions on high school athletes and what they should and shouldn’t take.

Summary and TLDR in one: Can some kind person tell me what the best/safest brands of creatine products are? I looked on Amazon and it was overwhelming.

I am happy to order from any place that is reputable and not selling crap filled with who knows what.

Marantz 2230…smells. Bad.

TLDR: have a Marantz 2230. Stinks like mold. LOoking for suggestions.

I just picked up a Marantz 2230 which was the rare gear victory that has scored points with the Mrs. as it looks nicer than the slightly goofy setup I had with a tube amp that has a ground issue in the phono line and very goofy turntable preamp workaround solution. The 2230 is sleek, doesn’t have homemade cables involved, all in all a win. It sounds great, is in decent shape, original box….one problem, it smells like a moldy basement. A lot like moldy basement. The box went to live in the garage rafters.

I opened it up blew out what dust/etc I could with compressed air, then I used lightly damp q-tips on the non component surfaces. Wiped out the top/side shell. Got the goo of time off of a fair number of surfaces. Sadly it still smells.

I am guessing the real answer here is either 1) get is serviced and cleaned by a pro, if I can find such a person or 2) whenever I get around to taking a swing at re-capping this, and no doubt breaking it down to its various bits in the process, to do a deep clean one part at a time. Which sounds like the kind of thing I
may have time for if I am ever solvent enough to retire.

I have to imagine this is a problem everyone has run into. I’ve had gear smell like cigarettes or pot, but never this much like mold/musty basement. Have your hit upon an amazing magic solution (literally or figuratively) to get the mold smell to fade at least? I suspect dipping gear in bleach is a bad idea. I took electronics classes in audio school a billion year ago, I think “wet stuff plus amp=bad” was on the board at least once. So were slew rate equations and I don’t remember a damn thing about that either.

Your novel home remedies that are safe at helped at least a bit welcome!

Anyone used a TENS unit as signal generating device?

I managed to mess up my neck in a car wreck years ago.

I have recently been playing with some synth DIY projects returning to electronic fun times as my kids are now pretty autonomous. Slowly gathering/building a modular system. Very slowly.

So my rejuvenated enthusiasm for electronic puttering has led me to excavate old things I had intended to circuit bend etc.

While I was digging through one of my drawers full of odds and ends I may have use of some day I found that I have a bunch of the TENS estim units (for those spared this particular annoyance in their lives, you attach pads to your body and the nerve stimulation is supposed to numb the response out through overstimulation, it works to a point) and I thought that they might be useful as a starting point for a drone device, or as a source of CV. You can set the frequency and pulse rate and intensity of electrical signal. I’m not quite at the “know enough to wing it from scratch” point, and thought some clever person must have toyed with these at some point.

Has anyone ever repurposed one of these for low-tech noise fun? Any schematics, suggestions, wisdom welcome.

[Before anyone gets mad, the following in intended to be read with a light joking tone, of course I don’t view the world in a nerds-v-jocks/cool kids/bullys or whatever way. I am pointing out something a bit surprising I saw on eBay for the purposes of humor.]

I have started to climb the steep learning curve of getting my own modular setup together building as much as I can and buying bits when it makes sense. Very early days. I recognize this as having ramped up to the next level of nerddom.

I was surprised, while looking at eurorack modules on eBay, to see that gone-far-too-young Grey’s Anatomy heartthrob Eric Dane had an enthusiasm for modular synthesizers and a handful of his modules are available for sale.

I suppose we now live in a world where Vin Diesel very openly talks about his love of D&D, and there is an NBA star who was interviewed enthusiastically talking how bought himself the Millenium Falcon LEGO kit when he was drafted or made the playoffs or whatever. As an 80’s kid, I find this all very confusing, the world is eroding my John Hughsian nerd tropes. It is -IS- the 40th anniversary of “revenge of the nerds”, maybe we won the war!
