The island doesn't seem to give people free will then why does it also want people to confront their past?
- The island deliberately puts people in positions where they fight off their traumatic past. For eg, Jack needs to let go of always wanting to be in control and "fixing" things, etc.
- However, it doesn't appear that the people had the free will to choose their actions. Jack for example, HAD to blow the bomb. It was literally the incident, so him blowing the bomb set things for everything to be in motion.
- Imagine a hypothetical version of Jack who genuinely lets go of his need for control before deciding to detonate the bomb.
If he truly had free will, he would say “I’m not going to do this. I don’t need to fix everything.”
But then the Incident wouldn never happen, and everything falls apart.
So it seems like the Island doesn’t actually allow Jack to make that choice which defeats the purpose of the characters trying to confront their past.
