what’s up with r/piercing??
i’m here to rant… my comment got removed from r/ piercing for “harmful advice/misinformation” on a post where OP had a death absolutely COVERED in wax buildup, OP saying their piercer told them to never clean the piercing.
all the comments recommending OP to poke at their fresh death piercing covered in wax gunk with q-tips were left but my comment saying to clean it daily in the shower (with a very gentle soap that has like, no harsh chemicals in it. if you’re not able to get yourself a good quality soap, saline is ok after shower) and then dry it with paper towel right out of the shower to avoid excess moisture and then to just leave it alone and not poke at it with q-tips (especially when you aren’t experienced and don’t know what you’re doing) was removed for being harmful advice/misinformation?
is that sub ok?
i am quite modified and have currently 12 piercings, work in a tattoo/piercing shop and have been for 8 years. on what earth do you ever not advise someone to clean their fresh piercing especially when they show such a gunked up mess?
the comments were borderline “twist it to remove the crusties, hihi”. that sub is a joke, the last sub i would go to if i ever needed advice.
edit: typo in the name of the sub
edit 2:
>If you choose to use soap on a healing piercing consider using a gentle soap free from harsh chemicals, dyes, and perfumes. The use of an antibacterial soap is not suggested as it may over-dry and irritate your piercing. If your piercer suggests the use of a soap, be sure to fully rinse away the product after use.
If sterile saline is not available in your region, focus on keeping the piercing clean by rinsing well during regular showering. . Check in with a local piercer for additional regional aftercare suggestions.

adding this just to point out that talking about washing your piercing in the shower with a gentle (chem free, scent free) soap (not harsh or anti-bacterial soap) resulting in deleted comments and bans is a rule they made up themselves for their subreddit, and is a "rule" that isn't backed by the APP unlike some comments pointed out.
Censoring people who are giving actual advice approved by the APP (even though that isn't the association we answer to, being based in Europe) is closer to misinforming people to me than telling someone to just clean their very gunked up piercing in the shower with the appropriate soap. (you haven't seen the photo but no amount of saline was going to clean that wax gunk off their piercing.)
some people will take that literally and will think that between not cleaning your piercing, and cleaning it with gentle soap, you're better off not cleaning it. That, is the definition of harmful advice/misinformation.
