A lesser talked about mound spot. I took this photo of the burial mound where it’s suspected up to 90 bodies are interred. The grass house was built by the joint efforts of the Texas Historical Commission and the Caddo Nation.

The Caddo occupied the wetlands of East Texas as well as areas in Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Arkansas. This particular settlement was right on the Camino Real de los Tejas, an ancient road built my indigenous people over centuries, used by the Spanish and French and still used to this day. The ancient Caddo people had trade access all the way from Mexico to the Great Lakes.

This site was abandoned by the Caddo around 1300 but in its prime would’ve been filled with grass houses and gardens, with temples and governmental structures built atop the other two mounds.

This painting was restored in 2024 back to its original condition.

Anne of Cleves was an intelligent woman with lots of life and character, and was regarded as one of the most beloved women of the Tudor court after her annulment to the King of England, Henry VIII.

Henry VIII most likely did not find her ugly, and that was a sexist excuse for annulment. The truth is she was not what he was expecting - she didn’t fawn over him the first time they met, and it was a disastrous encounter. Henry VIII decided to play a game in which he would test to see if it was love at first sight. He dressed himself like a regular nobleman and made advances towards her in the hope that she would instinctively recognize him and fall for him.

She didn’t recognize him as she had never seen him before and took his advances as sexual harassment and demurely tried to avoid him. This severely injured his ego and he chose to slander her to make himself feel better. The problem wasn’t him, it couldn’t be, it had to be her!

Despite this terrible encounter and unfavorable things he chose to say about her, he still appreciated her for her ease in accepting the annulment of marriage.

She was officially designated as the “King’s Beloved Sister.” This was a way to elevate her status as a woman in the court, allowing her a grand settlement of money and properties. She had such a prosperous life in the court that she outlived Henry VIII and lived into the last years of Queen Mary I’s reign.
