Two teacher couple planning to use Ireland as our way into the EU. Are we missing something obvious?

Hi everyone.

Me (26M) and my partner (27F) are both teachers from India. We are starting our PGCE with QTS at Cardiff Met in September 2026. I'll be doing Secondary Physics and she'll be doing Secondary Maths. We should finish around August 2027.

A little background about us.

I have a BSc in Physics, Chemistry and Maths(Its a triple honours program), a B.Ed(Bachelors in Education), and a PGDIE(Post graduate diploma in International Education) with an IB focus. My partner has a BSc in Maths and a BEd. After next year we'll both have PGCE and QTS as well.

Our long term plan is probably a bit different from most people.

We don't actually want to settle in one country forever. We'd love to spend maybe 4 or 5 years teaching in one country, then move somewhere else and experience a different education system and culture. Europe for a few years, maybe Australia or New Zealand after that, maybe somewhere in Asia, then back again. We both enjoy travelling and honestly I don't think either of us can imagine staying in the same place our whole lives.

The reason Ireland keeps coming up is because every time I research this, or even ask AI tools, they all point towards Ireland being the easiest route to an EU passport for teachers. That almost makes me doubt it because when every answer is exactly the same, I start wondering if there is something people who have actually lived it know that the internet doesn't.

From what I've read, there isn't a language requirement for citizenship, getting recognised as a teacher looked fairly straightforward, and it seemed like a married couple has a decent route where the dependent spouse can work as well. On paper it sounds really good. Maybe a little too good.

We're also looking seriously at New Zealand because secondary STEM teachers are on the Green List, and Australia as well if we manage the AITSL assessment.

The part I'm struggling to understand is whether our whole plan actually makes sense.

If we eventually become Irish citizens, does that really mean we can move around Europe and teach wherever we want? Or is it more complicated because teaching is a regulated profession and every country still expects you to register separately? I have a feeling free movement and actually being allowed to teach are two completely different things.

Has anyone here actually done something similar? Maybe worked in Ireland, became a citizen, then moved somewhere like Germany, the Netherlands, Spain or another EU country to teach. Was registering all over again a massive headache?

I'm also wondering if moving countries every 4 or 5 years ends up hurting you in ways we haven't thought about. Things like pensions, references, employers wondering why you never stay anywhere for very long. Does it eventually become a red flag, or is it fairly normal in international teaching?

And finally, if you were in our shoes, would you even start with Ireland?

Would it make more sense to go to New Zealand or Australia first, get PR there because the salaries and lifestyle are attractive, work for a while, then think about Europe later? Or is getting an EU citizenship first actually the smarter move in the long run?

We're genuinely trying to plan the next twenty or thirty years instead of just the next job. So if our thinking is completely wrong, I'd much rather hear it now than five years from now.

Thanks everyone. Looking forward to hearing from people who've actually been through this.

Experiences with Cardiff Met student accommodation at Cyncoed Campus?

Hi everyone,

My partner and I will be joining Cardiff Metropolitan University this September for our PGCE courses, and we're considering staying in the student accommodation at the Cyncoed Campus.

We're particularly interested in hearing from students who are currently living (or have recently lived) in the Cyncoed accommodation.

How has your experience been regarding:

Room quality and maintenance?

Internet/Wi-Fi reliability?

Safety and security?

Noise levels and study environment?

Kitchen and shared facilities?

Distance to supermarkets and city center?

Overall value for money?

As a couple and postgraduate students, we're looking for a comfortable and relatively quiet place to live for the academic year.

Would you recommend the Cyncoed accommodation, or would you suggest looking for private accommodation instead?

Any insights, pros, cons, or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

UK Student Visa - Education Loan Amount Lower Than Required Funds, but Extra Tuition Fee Paid Personally

Hey there,

I have a question regarding UK student visa financial requirements and would appreciate any guidance from people who have been in a similar situation.

  • Tuition fee: £14,000
  • Maintenance funds (9 months): £10,539
  • Total funds required: £24,539

I have an education loan sanctioned for £23,329 from Credila, which leaves a shortfall of £1,210.

To make up for this, I paid an additional £1,500 to the university from personal/family funds. Along with my initial deposit of £7,000, the university has received a total of £8,500, and my CAS reflects this amount as tuition fees already paid.

My concern is:

  1. How will UKVI know that the extra £1,500 came from personal funds?
  2. Will the visa officer simply rely on the loan sanction letter and the CAS showing £8,500 paid?
  3. Do I need to provide any additional evidence (bank statements, payment receipts, sponsor documents, etc.) to demonstrate where the extra £1,500 came from?
  4. Has anyone had a similar situation where their loan amount was slightly lower than the total required funds, but they had already paid part of the tuition fee from personal funds?

Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Is the Flipkart Axis Credit Card worth getting for MacBook sale discounts on Flipkart?

Hello everyone,

I’m planning to buy M5 MacBook, most likely during the August 15 sale on Flipkart. I noticed that the Flipkart + Axis Bank credit card usually seems to get the highest instant discount compared to other credit cards during Flipkart sales.

So I’m considering applying for the Flipkart Axis Credit Card mainly for this purchase.

For people who already use it:

  • Is it actually worth getting just for big sale purchases like MacBooks/laptops?
  • Does Flipkart consistently give the best discounts with this card during major sales?
  • Are there any hidden downsides, annual fees, cashback limitations, or issues with Axis customer service?
  • Would another card be better for Apple products or high-value electronics purchases?
  • Just FYI I already have an HDFC money back+ CC.

Would love to hear real experiences before I apply.

TL;DR: Planning to buy an M5 MacBook during the August 15 Flipkart sale. Thinking of getting the Flipkart Axis Credit Card because it seems to give the best discounts. Is it worth applying just for this purchase, or are there better alternatives?

Cardiff Met PGCE Accommodation Advice Needed – University Halls vs Private Accommodation for International Students?

Hi everyone,

My partner and I will be joining Cardiff Metropolitan University, Cyncoed Campus this September for the 1-year PGCE program, and we’re trying to understand the best accommodation options in Cardiff.

Since we’re both coming from India and don’t know anyone in the UK, we’d really appreciate advice from current students or people familiar with Cardiff Met.

A few details about our situation:

  • We will likely spend only around 2–4 months regularly attending university classes.
  • For most of the course (around 6–7 months), we’ll be on school placement/training.
  • We do not want to stay together in the same room/house due to personal reasons, so we’re looking for two separate rooms.
  • We’ll also be doing online tutoring/work daily for 1–2 hours, so stable internet and a relatively quiet environment matter.
  • Since our schedule may get busy, accommodation options where food is available nearby (or catered accommodation) would be very helpful.
  • Budget-friendly options are important for us.

We’re confused between:

  1. University student accommodation
  2. Private student halls
  3. Shared private housing

Some questions:

  • What would be the smartest and most economical option for PGCE students at Cardiff Met?
  • During placements, do students usually continue staying in Cardiff or move closer to placement schools?
  • Is university accommodation worth it for PGCE students considering we may not be on campus much?
  • Are there any specific areas/halls you would recommend or avoid?
  • How difficult is it to manage food/cooking during PGCE placements?

TL;DR:
My partner and I are international students joining the PGCE program at Cardiff Metropolitan University this September. We’ll mostly be on school placements after the first few months, want separate rooms, need good internet for online tutoring, prefer affordable accommodation with easy food options, and are confused between university halls vs private accommodation. Looking for advice from current/former Cardiff Met students on the best and most practical option.

Any advice, tips, or personal experiences would really help us a lot. Thank you!
