Trails in the Sky 1st chapter - not sure if this is for me

I rarely played JRPGs but I'm trying to explore more of these since I enjoyed some of the recent titles like Monster Hunter Stories 3 and Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma.

I've got so many recommendations for Trails in the Sky and since the demo is available on Steam, I am giving it a try. The thing is, I can't vibe with the protagonist. From what I read, she is universally loved but I just.... can't really stand her. I heard that she has great character growth but that happens towards the end of Chapter 1... I'm not sure whether I should just push on or just drop the game.

I'm not really used to turn based combat, so playing on easy difficult and combat hasn't been too engaging either. Story seem to be very slow burn... and not sure if demo would be good representation of what's to come or it will end before the game gets into "good stuff".

What do you ladies think? Is it worthwhile investing more time into demo / full game?

Really wish Guardians of Azuma have a photomode

Village decoration is really fun in this game and I wish I can share the entire layout of the village easily but unfortunately that isn't possible without a photo mode.. but still wanted to share one area I am most happy with!

My character is married to this blonde cutie, and he is from another continent - so, I've added a house that would make him feel more at home and added his life size cutout model right outside of it 😂

Included screenshots of the couple at the end as well

Looking for very specific type of games

I started delve in JRPGs of late. I have a very specific taste in gaming, so it's always difficult to find a game I end up enjoying but last time I asked in this sub, I discovered Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma which I really enjoyed - so I'm trying my luck again!

I am looking for JRPGs with:

 • Female protagonist that I can either fully customise or have aesthetic that I like who doesn't look too young (my preferred character design examples below):

Left: Monster Hunter Stories 3 (fully customisable character). Right: Guardians of Azuma

 • Female protagonist who doesn't have over the top voice overs - I liked Estelle Bright (from Trails in the Sky)'s character design but couldn't stand her VO (in Japanese) - I prefer lower pitch voice that is more calm than Estelle's. I tend to play games with anime looking characters with Japanese VO.
 • Fantasy setting with lighthearted atmosphere and bright colours
 • Bonus point if the game offers lots of different outfits for protagonist (preferably earnable in game)
 • Bonus point if the game offers village/house decoration aspect
 • I don't mind both RT and TB combat as long as the combat isn't too tough like Dark Souls
 • I generally play games on PC but I do own Switch 1 as well

Monster Hunter Stories 3 & Guardians of Azuma are the only JRPGs I enjoyed with aesthetics I'm currently after.

Some of other Japanese games I enjoyed are: Pokemon G/B/R/Y (1st generation), Monster Hunter: World & Wilds, Dragon's Dogma 1 & 2.

I played a bit of Granblue Fantasty: Relink (because I liked some of character designs) - it was alright but I got bored after about 25 hours.

Octopath Traveler 0 (since it has village building) started off promising but the plot was too depressing for my liking.

Not quite a Japanese game but I enjoyed Stardew Valley a lot as well (not a big fan of pixelated graphics but it's not a deal breaker).

Keen to see some recommendations from JRPG fans - and thanks in advance!

Question about post story end content

I read that the story end content open up once you have a child after the marriage.

How much more content do we get exactly? Do we get some more story as well or is it mainly dungeon crawling type content?

I'm sort of torn on whether I should continue or not... I found combat ok in GoA but it wasn't my favourite part of the game. If there are more story contents/dialogues with NPCs & spouse, I might give try it out. I'm sure Mauro is keen to go on more adventure with Kaguya post marriage.

Looking for a game similar to RF: Guardians of Azuma

I just finished Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma after 65 hours and I really enjoyed it, especially the part where you get to know NPCs in this game.

I was thinking of picking up other Rune Factory games but I didn't like the character art style in RF3 & 4. RF5 art style seem to be more similar to Guardians of Azuma but I've been told it's weakest one of the series.

Would love if I can get some recommendations with games with character art style similar to RF: GoA with village decoration and interesting characters. Bonus point if I can customise my own character but this one is entirely optional and not a must.

I don't generally play JRPGs because I find VOs a bit too dramatic but would consider them since I enjoyed RF: GoA & Monster Hunter Stories 3.

Thank you in advance!

Mauro is such a looker, I joined the 2.1% of players who married him lol

My Kaguya married Kurama first and I found his romance to be very down to earth and sweet.

But I couldn't get over just how cute Kaguya and Mauro looked during the firework festival, I had to use Fateweaver Shrine to see how the romance go with Mauro as well.

Mauro's romance comes across a bit more selfish than Kurama's but he came around at the end, and two of them just look so cute together. Mauro is a looker alright lol - I think he look just so damn cute in Yukata.

I think I will be switching back and forth between two fates at this rate lol.

Finally made decision on romance option lol

Honestly, after seeing the firework with Mauro, I thought these two look really great together, so I thought I will be choosing Mauro.

Cue his confession, I got really turned off by how he doesn't promise he will stay with Kaguya for sure and hints that he may just disappear one day to seek for treasures again. So, Kaguya ended up calling off the whole thing. It's a shame because I thought they look so cute together (especially in their yukata). Well, at least he took the rejection quite well. I did love change in his tone / voice and attitude during the confession scene tho, it was very well done (I play with Japanese voice over).

Well, since that didn't work out, I decided to see how the confession goes for Subaru - I didn't like how he treated Kaguya all this time but was curious how the romance will progress after all that. I liked his confession more than Mauro's since he promises to be there at Kaguya's side and he explains how he wanted to keep his distance from her because he thought his presence will cause more harm than good for Kaguya, and that he always loved her even before their engagement.

Still, I didn't like how he treated Kaguya prior to the confession, so I reloaded the game where Kaguya rejected Mauro after the confession (I want to keep it as canon that they had feelings for each other but decided to not pursue the relationship), then Kaguya went to confess her love for Kurama this time.

Ok, honestly, I didn't think my Kaguya will end up with him. His first impression wasn't that great, so I didn't even consider him as one of the potential bachelor at all in the beginning but I really liked how 6 Gods interacted with each other as the story progressed and grew fond of Kurama - the guy is awkward, hilarious, smart and kind. So I decided to stick with him and Kaguya had 2 dates so far with him - yep, I think I made a right decision 😂

Not sure if I will end up changing timeline and see other romances later on, but happy to keep Kurama as a romance option for now! I've already finished the main plot before confessing to anyone, so I can just work on getting Kurama's bonding level up (currently 9) without having to deal with farming aspect of the game lol.

Kinda annoyed that Kaguya is still wearing the hairpiece gifted by Subaru in cut-scenes. You'd think she will take it off now that she is with someone else.

A question: is bonding level 10 maximum required to see all romance event or do I have to raise it higher?

Guardians of Azuma - fun romance dilemma

So, I'm interested in dating Mauro, Kurama and Subaru.

Its now 3 days before the firework festival and first person I ran into was Murasame, who asked me to go see fireworks together which I had to reject. Then I ran into Mauro who also asked same thing so I said yes to him. Then I talk to Kurama which raised my bonding level with him to 7 which means I can confess to him. Imagine that I actually confess to Kurama now but then go see firework with Mauro 😂

And behind all this, I'm progressing Subaru's bonding quest because I'm curious if he will ever get out of his passive aggressiveness. If I were Kurama, I'd probably reject Kaguya's advance at this point and tell her to make up her mind before asking me out 🤣 Do you want me, or sunshine boy who you seem to be your best friend (bonding level 11) or your childhood friend?

Romance question

I'm interested in romancing Subaru, Mauro and Kurama.

Since Mauro joins the party early, I'm already at bonding level 9 with him but his bonding quests are blocked by main story progression. I'm about to throw a party to convince 6th God to join in.

My question is, would Mauro and Karuma take longer to see their romance plot than Subaru's? I'm thinking of marrying Subaru but was hoping to see Mauro and Karuma's romance before I complete Subaru's in case I end up liking either more but getting tired of waiting for their plot to progress.

Looking for recommendation

I'm looking for JRPGs with base building element integrated with the story. I enjoyed Octopath Traveler 0 for 20 hours or so but eventually dropped it because the main story started to escalate too much which didn't quite fit in with cozy village rebuilding aspect.

So in summary, I'm looking for games:

 • on PC (preferably Steam)
 • with female protagonist (I prefer rolling my own protagonist but I know those are super rare in JRPGs, so don't mind as long as main casts include female character)
 • with base/house/village building aspect which is well integrated with the game's story
 • I enjoyed games with base/house/village building aspects like Stardew Valley, Valheim, RimWorld etc but I'm looking for games that are more RPG this time (party based combat, fun class/job building aspects, decent story & character development etc)
 • don't mind whether the combat is real time or turn based
 • don't mind pixel graphics but dislike characters with big heads (e.g. Animal Crossing, My Time at series etc)

Thanks in advance!

Does invasive hide drop from repelling as well?

I know I had no invasive materials when I left Azuria (I did repel all 3 invasive monsters there) but then I noticed today that I have 2 invasive hides now. I repelled all 3 invasives in Canalta as well but I thought invasive hides only drop from slay, not repel, so I was surprised to see them in my inventory.

Finally starting chapter 2 after 31 hours

I spent as long as I can in Azuria - defeated everything except Namielle and invasive monsters. Very sad >!Simon!<is no longer with us but the show must go on....

u/sherithelovefool — 1 month ago

I managed to defeat Astalos in chapter 1!

Astalos is the highest level monster I defeated in Azuria - it was level 62 and my party was level 41 (we leveled to 42 after this fight).

I tried my luck with invasive Plesioth and Yian Garaga, and Namielle but got absolutely destroyed by them all lol. I'm going to call this a win and finally move onto next chapter.

Some monsters seem to have level scaling

There are two monsters I've found that seem to scale with player's level: a Plesioth and a Brachydios in a cave that opens up during Kora's personal quest in chapter 1.

Both of them were level 44 when I first encountered it as level 32 party - I managed to defeat Plesioth but wasn't able to do same for Brachydios. So I thought I'd level up a bit more and come back for Brachydios. To my surprise, when I came back as level 35 party, I realised its level was changed to 45. So, out of curiosity, I leveled my party up more and came back, then realised it levels with me. In the screenshot, my party was level 39 and Brachydios is now level 49. Both Plesioth and Brachydios in this dungeon seem to be always 10 level higher than player's party level.

I heard that some players managed to reach level 99 in Azuria during chapter 1, and I wondered how on earth they could do that - well, I think I know how now lol.

Managed to defeat napping Espinas in Azuria and made it retreat in my 2nd playthrough <3

I managed to defeat Brachydios in a dungeon that opens up during Kora's personal quest in chapter 1 which helped a lot (its armor and weapons are great) with Espinas fight. My party was level 37, and Espinas was level 44. This Espinas actually hits harder when its napping than when it is awake lol.

Bit of a shame I missed S rank by 25 points. I also tried to slay it again at its den but lost to it at turn 9 *sad face*. At turn 8, Espinas used an AoE attack which made Simon/Fawn lose their remaining 1 heart, I was down to 1 heart, then it sneaked in an attack before me in turn 9 :(

Ah well, at least now I have Espinas released in Azuria now to get more eggs!
