Experimenting with Flashlights for Cinema + Photo Lighting

Over the last few months I've been experimenting with various flashlights for cinema lighting. I also have a fairly full Nanlight kit, but am thinking of lighting that's backpack compact.

I'm surprised how good the light can be with the right modifiers, utilizing bounce, various diffusion materials, etc.

Currently I've focused on the Wurkkos ts-32 for it's nice even flood of 12 Nichia 519a emitters. It still had a wee bit of subtle green tint, so I placed Lee Zircon 804 disk just inside the bezel.

Good for bouncing off wall or ceiling to raise ambient level, off a white scrim, or through a 5-in-1 disk diffuser.

I've got 3 Wurkkos ts26s Nichia 519a 5k. I like these because they are a bit more directional than the ts-32, but they don't over-power and scream "lit with flashlights". Can look subtle for fill.

I haven't decided it the ts26s needs Lee Zircon 804 gel or not. I hate to put anything in front of those great emitters, but sometimes I wonder if there might be a wee bit of yellow/green tint there too. However, I haven't been able to get their bezels off, so I might just leave them well alone. Magnets in the end caps very handy.

The Wurkkos ts22 lights also very good for longer throw of more light. Can almost compete with the ts-32 for bounce, but not quite. I have 3 or these, with Lee Zircon 804 added to these too. Magnets in the end caps also very handy.

Recently added a Wurkkos ts-11 for very controlled beam to highlight items in a scene without significant spill lighting anything else. Love this little addition for the kit more than I anticipated. Its also got Lee Zircon 804 added, but it's noticeably cooler than all the others. I think it's closer to 6k and all the others are close to 5k. Wish it had a magnet rear cap as well.

Doesn't matter much since I'm using it to highlight, so the color mismatch isn't an issue for me.

Lastly, I have a couple of little Wuben medium white 5k e7 lights with a little piece of Lee Zircon 804 gel held onto them with a small rubber band between the two e7 emitters. These are great for little scene accents here and there. And the magnet caps are great. I also love that they are an octogon shape so they don't roll off and can be positioned to aim up at about a 45deg angle or straight.

I've got the fitted silicone domes for the ts-32, ts26s, and ts22 lights... that are a lot more useful than anticipated.

I did add a small Nanlite Miro 30c for when I need small, but great color accuracy, then augment with the flashlights.

To be clear, this isn't about trying to do cinema lighting with cheaper lighting. I already have a fully COB kit and all the modifiers. My interest is in lighting that:

  1. looks unique/non-standard but believable
  2. small enough to carry in a day pack
  3. lighting that doesn't look like obvious cinema lighting to attract attention and requests for permits from property owners and/or police
  4. battery operated for a couple of hours of decent light

Are there any other lights along this line I should be looking at for this use in cinema/documentary and/or photo still lighting?

Alternative to Anker Solix C300 dc?

Bought an Anker Solix C300 dc and it wound charge above 5w with 3 of my chargers. After 15 emails jumping through hoops with support where I provided proof of purchase at their request, all the test data, and photos… Anker tech support said it’s probably a cable issue and offered to sell me another cable.

Are effing kidding me?!!’ I’ve tried half a dozen 140-240w pd3.1 cables, including the one that comes with the C300 dc. And told them so. It’s not the cable. The C300 wouldn’t even recognize the 3x 67w chargers on of the box until I updated the firmware. Now it only charges at 5w with these chargers and estimates charging to take over 62hrs!!!

I think I may return it for a return/refund to Amazon and buy something else since this is how I was treated on my first tech support inquiry to Anker.

You can read the details here: https://www.reddit.com/r/AnkerSOLIXCommunity/s/xxEdKT6o4D

So, it appears the closest competitor is the EF ECOFLOW TRAIL Plus 300 DC Portable Power Station, 288Wh for a little less money and similar specs.

Loos like the ecoflow has 3x 140w usbc ports vs only 2x 140w ports on the Anker C300.

The 140w usbc ports is useful to me for running Nanlite fc120c and fc-60b cinema COB lights remotely.

Looks like the Ecoflow is a little lighter than the c300 and its handle converts to a charge cable.

The chemistry is different between the two, it I don’t know how significant that is, or which out be better for running LED video/film lights.

Has anyone compared the two? I like the Anker overall, but I don’t like that it appears to be very restrictive on which chargers it’ll work with… that, and the fact Anker support has me jump through all these hoops on a brand new power station, then ultimately punted and blamed the cable, when I’ve tried several high spec cables including their own.

Very off putting and disappointing coming from a company with the reputation that Anker has.

I don’t know if Ecoflow is any better, but I’m now looking for similar specs and pricing for alternatives that aren’t Anker.

Anker Solix C300DC

Hi,

Recently got the Solix C300DC power station to power remote video COB lights remotely when away from AC.

For the most part, it's working out well (although I'm running up against some PD3.1 brick walls).

That said, it's so far the best option I've found vs going full AC unit with the extra weight.

The only issue I have is that I have 3 identical TopVork 67w usbc/usba chargers that I've been using since 2023. All solid, reliable and deliver 67w charge to all the devices I have.

However, when I got the Solix C300DC a week ago, I tried to charge it with them. It wouldn't recognize them to charge. After I updated the firmware on the C300 it recognizes them and charges but only at a painfully slow 5w. If I use two of them it's 10w. I'm using C300 ports C2/C3.

I tried the reset button you press with a paper clip, and no luck.

I also have an Anker 140w GAN that works fine with the C300 and delivers just under 130w input. I tried an old 30w usb-a charger and it delivers about 24w. So, I tried the usb-a ports on the TopVork 67w chargers and they also deliver about 24w. Two of them just under 50w.

So, the issue is the pd usb-c ports on the TopVorks aren't being recognized for the 67w they're capable of with every other device I've tried except for the C300.

In addition to this, I have an older Iniu 90w charger that delivers about 80w to the C300.

The issue is specifically related to these TopVork charger usb-c ports. They are no longer available on Amazon, but like I said... they were perfectly for everything else, including other modern power stations I tried before settling on the C300.

I don't know if this means I have a malfunctioning C300DC that I should return for exchange? Or, is there something else I could try? I've tried a half dozen other cables too. All rated at 100w-240w and they work fine to deliver high wattage on all the other chargers and devices I have that accept high wattage.

I've already contacted Anker support but don't have a resolution yet. If it *should be working, I'll return for exchange. If the failure is explainable, I'd like to know why. I don't want to keep this C300DC model if it's inherently that picky about which chargers it'll work with.

Based on Anker's published spec requirements, these TopVorks should be delivering the 67w they're capable of via usb-c port.

Here are the specs for the TopVork chargers:

How flatlining for 20 minutes in Mexico completely rewired my vision and color philosophy as a street photographer.

I've been an Austin-based photographer for a long time, but a few years ago, my entire relationship with art changed. I went to Oaxaca for a shamanic ceremony and ended up flatlining for 20 minutes.

Looking back at Earth from that dark void completely rewired how I see reality—and how I capture images. Coming back gave me a profound, urgent appreciation for earthly contrast. The vivid colors, the raw textures, the beautiful imperfections, and even the sadness of a passing moment.

If you're a creative currently dealing with a creative rut or burnout, I went deep into this artistic philosophy and the story itself in a recent hour-long interview with the Abracadabra Sisters.

Hopefully, it brings some inspiration to your own work: https://youtu.be/IcuzdZhdVWg

I flatlined for 20 minutes in Oaxaca. This is how looking back at Earth from the void altered my perspective.

A few years ago, I went deep into the mountains of Mexico for a shamanic ceremony and ended up flatlining for 20 minutes.

It's a surreal thing to stand up and look down at your own body while people are pounding on your chest. I remember distinctly looking down and thinking, "Those are my shorts. That's me." Before I pulled back into my skin, I experienced this temporary state of absolute, overwhelming clarity in a dark void.

Coming back made me realize how much I took earthly contrast for granted. The light, the dark, the joy, and the sadness—it's all part of a beautiful palette.

I recently sat down for a raw, hour-long interview on the YouTube channel "Abracadabra Sisters" to map out the entire experience, what I saw on the other side, and how it affected me. Thought this community might appreciate the depth of the conversation.
