New Memphis‑based gun channel: 901 Left of Bang – Polymer80 G19 intro from a left‑of‑center local

Hey y’all,

I’ve started a local gun channel called 901 Left of Bang, looking at firearms from a left‑of‑center, harm‑reduction angle instead of the usual “culture war” stuff.

This 45‑second Short is my intro, built around a pre‑ban Polymer80 Glock 19‑style build and some quick thoughts on ghost guns and “undocumented” guns in America. I’d appreciate any feedback from Memphis folks on the vibe and where to take the channel next.

Thanks r/liberalgunowners

I just wanted to thank this community for existing. Being a liberal who also supports the Second Amendment is isolating in most gun spaces, but here it feels normal.

The mix of serious policy talk, safety, and build nerding has pushed me to start a YouTube channel focused on firearms and a more inclusive gun culture. The way people here disagree with receipts rather than resort to harassment is something I really respect and want to emulate.

Intro video for my new channel, 901 Left of Bang is linked.

I also care a lot about making gun spaces more welcoming for people who do not fit the usual mold, whether that is about faith, appearance, or identity, and this community has shown that is possible.

Thanks for the conversations, the ideas, and for proving “liberal gun owner” is not an oxymoron.

Creating a left leaning GunTube Channel

I just posted my first YouTube short and figured r/liberalgunowners was the right place to launch this experiment. I am starting a left‑leaning, all‑inclusive GunTube channel because I am tired of the unspoken rule that “gun culture” has to be conservative, exclusionary, or allergic to talking about harm reduction and public safety.

This first short is a quick explanation of the CoolFire Trainer setup in a Rock Island 1911 and why I see it as a cost‑ and time‑efficient way to get extra reps at home without burning ammo. No tacticool LARP, no culture‑war rant, just a progressive gun owner talking about training tools.

I would genuinely like feedback from this crowd: what would you want to see from a GunTube channel that treats liberal gun owners as the norm instead of the punchline?

Grey Ghost G17.3 “duty Roland” w/ Superior Trigger – 1” at 25 yards

Been tinkering on this one for a while and finally got it where I want it, so I figured I’d share.
Base gun is a Glock 17 Gen 3 pattern built on a Grey Ghost Precision full‑size Combat Pistol frame. KKM match barrel, KKM comp, plus three inline slide ports. Slide is milled clean: no irons, direct‑milled RMR footprint running a 1 MOA Trijicon SRO. Surefire X300U up front.
Trigger is a Superior Triggers duty‑style drop‑in that breaks around a crisp 3–3.5 lb. It’s still very much something I’d trust in a defensive role, but clean enough that the dot basically moves when I think “press.” Superior really nailed the wall/reset feel on this one for a duty/defense hybrid build.[superiortriggers +2]
Took it out today and it’s stacking 1” groups at 25 yards when I do my part. For a comped, ported “duty” gun with a light and optic, I’m more than happy with that. Recoil impulse is stupid flat; the dot barely leaves the window on decent splits.

Rock Island TAC FS .45 ACP: $400 beater turned hand‑fit, engraved, compensated EDC/match gun, not a safe queen

I bought a four hundred dollar Rock Island .45 as a beater to learn on, then did the fitting, tuning, and setup myself before sending it out for engraving and coatings, so the gun is as much a proof of concept in my own limited gunsmithing as it is a carry and match pistol.

Follow the thread:
https://www.reddit.com/r/1911/s/EQIuK1sj9V

Frame, slide, and machine work
Slide optics cut for Trijicon RMR/SRO footprint by Guncuts.
Slide, frame, and grips engraved by Sliverback Panda (cosmetic work, but done after mechanical setup).
Frame rails stoned and honed, then slide refit and checked for zero vertical movement at the barrel hood in battery. Frame to slide does have slight wobble.
Trigger bow track/housing stoned and polished to remove roughness and reduce drag on the new trigger bow.
Barrel throat polished and frame feed ramp polished for reliable feeding with JHP and match ammo, keeping correct 1911 ramp geometry.
A Marvel‑style disconnector cut was hand filed into the underside of the slide’s disconnector rail so the disconnector cams down a small angled ramp instead of crashing into a hard edge, which smooths cycling and removes the “speed bump” in the stroke.
The hammer to firing pin stop (tip of hammer) was stoned to take the crash out so the hammer no longer cams backward on slide.

Fire‑control group and tuning
EGW 1911 Hard Sear (10040), tool‑steel, fully machined, installed and stoned to mate with hammer hooks for a crisp, safe break.
EGW HD Ball Head Long Disconnector (10050), blued, installed and fit for clean reset and correct timing with the slide.
TMC Ultralight Match 1911 Trigger, solid medium flat black, aluminum shoe with stainless bow, installed and fit (bow width/height, pre‑travel tabs, overtravel screw).
ISMI 17 lb mainspring/hammer spring installed in the mainspring housing.
Titanium hammer strut and titanium mainspring cap installed to reduce reciprocating weight and resist corrosion.
Wilson Combat plunger tube spring installed to firm up thumb safety and slide‑stop detents.
EGW Evolved 1911 Sear Spring installed, with its longer, lightened leaves tuned for full, positive contact on the sear, disconnector, and grip safety while keeping the pull smooth and consistent.
Sear, hammer hooks, and disconnector engagement surfaces stoned and polished for a clean, match‑grade break while maintaining safe hook height and proper primary/secondary angles.

Slide, extractor, firing pin system
EGW Oversized Firing Pin Stop, Series 70, .45 ACP, blue, cut for adjustable sight, fit to the slide and extractor to prevent clocking and tune recoil impulse.
Oversized .092 firing pin for .45 ACP installed and checked for free movement and correct protrusion.
EGW HD Extractor, .45 ACP, Series 70, blue, installed, tensioned, and checked for correct hook engagement and ejection pattern.

Barrel, bushing, recoil system, compensator
EGW Thick Flange Barrel Bushing, blue, .699 OD, gunsmith‑fit straight bore, custom cut to your .581 in barrel OD, installed and fit for tight but reliable lockup.
Barrel‑bushing compensator** **Government‑length 5 in 1911 comp that replaces the bushing, sized for 0.577–0.581 in barrel OD with 0.582–0.583 in ID, usable up to .45 ACP, adding about 1 in length and ~2.4 oz at the muzzle; fit to barrel and slide.
EGW 1‑piece tungsten 5 in guide rod installed to increase muzzle‑forward weight and smooth recoil.
EGW long‑nose recoil spring plug for thick‑flange bushing with .332 in hole, blue, installed to match the thick flange and guide rod.
Wilson Combat 1911 Flat‑Wire Recoil Spring, full‑size Government, chrome‑silicon, 15 lb (model 614G15).

Grips, magwell, magazines, and externals
Stan Chen SI magwell installed with mainspring housing.
LOK Grips 1911 Palm Swell GridLOK Brass panels (solid brass, aggressive GridLOK texture, palm‑swell profile) installed to add grip traction and significant weight.
Defensive magazines: Wilson Combat Vickers/ETM 8‑round .45 ACP magazines set up.
Inception Defense 1911 Base Plate, extra‑large, gold anodized, fitted to Wilson Combat Elite
0.6 ounces of tungsten weight added in the internal pockets of the base plates to boost inertia and guarantee positive, drop‑free ejection.
Competition magazines: Mec‑Gar full‑size 1911 .45 ACP 10‑round extended magazines, upgraded with Tripp Research “Super 9” spring and hybrid follower kits for improved feeding and lock‑back.
SureFire X300U‑A weapon light mounted on the dust cover rail on both the Rock Island (about 1,000 lumens, ~4 oz with batteries).

Optic and protection
Trijicon SRO 1 MOA installed in the RMR‑pattern cut, correctly torqued and secured.
JagerWerks BROS (Battle Ready Optic Shield) for SRO installed under and around the SRO to add impact protection and brass deflection, adding ~1 oz of stainless shield.

Coatings and finish work
High‑polish TiN by STS Firearms on the slide, frame, JagerWerks BROS, and firing pin, for gold‑tone, hard, low‑friction surfaces.
DLC Plus by Advanced Coating Technologies (actechnol.com) on: barrel, guide rod, small internal parts (bushing, plug, safeties, slide stop, pins, etc.), and brass GridLOK grips, providing very high hardness, low friction, and corrosion resistance in a dark finish.

Ammunition:
Primary defensive load: Federal HST 230 gr JHP, standard pressure, .45 Auto.
Secondary carry load (bought on discount): Hornady American Gunner .45 Auto, 185 gr XTP, standard pressure.
Experimental / specialty load (on hand): 160 gr +P controlled‑fragmentation .45 ACP.
Practice load: 230 gr FMJ ball, standard pressure (match recoil spring tuned for this).
