How to explain to 5 year old what his grandma believes?

Pretty soon, we'll be living with my devoutly catholic mother in law for at least a year. We already know what we'll tell her if she tries to talk to him about religion, but what would you tell a child that young? Really wanting to keep the peace while also conveying to him that what she believes is bizarre.

Where is the course etiquette?!

What ever happened to being quiet and still while someone is putting?! Disgraceful.

Are these conditions alright for just popping up on whitewater?

In the lessons I did, the instructor was taking me out the back, which was cool and all, but it was so much work for me to get back out there every time that it was hard to get many reps in the small amount of time. Hopefully this is enough information, but does this look like decent enough conditions to just go out and work on pop ups on whitewater?

Looking for the metalhead security guy at black sheep in late 2024

He's not in trouble or anything. We just had an interaction (good, but about something bad going on at a show) and I wanted to touch base about it. It was at the Keller Williams show, I believe in September 2024. If you know him or are him, please get in touch!

Starting early in Texas?

Hey y'all. So, in Texas you must turn 5 by September 1 to start Kindergarten, but we would really like to start our child in Kindy this August although he turns 5 roughly a week after that cutoff, and here's why:

  1. He's very advanced. He can already do double digit multiplication and addition, and exponents, and some light algebra. He can read beyond his age level. That's measurable, but there are other areas where he's showing signs of being advanced.

  2. By the time we return to the USA, he will have already been in Kindergarten for a nearly a full academic year. We would hate for him to have to go backward especially considering how advanced he is.

  3. When we moved away from Colorado in December, he was in Pre-K and would have been starting Kindergarten in Colorado in August of 2026 had we stayed. So again, if we can't do Kindergarten, he would be doing a whole year of Pre-K... again.

Is anyone familiar with what our options are in texas so that he's not held back? Thanks in advance!

Edit: Y'all are the most illiterate bunch of people imaginable. In true reddit fashion, you have failed to read the body of this post. I am not looking for parenting advice, I am looking for input on navigating Texas' system.

Does a landlord have to tell you about asbestos? [QLD]

We started renting this place back in Feb, but some things typically of a slumlord reared their heads. Then the neighbors let us know the roof and garage walls are asbestos. I know it isn't a big deal unless it's damaged, but still makes me uncomfortable. But really the bigger problem is that I feel they should have informed us. Is that a requirement in Queensland?

What to do in Toowoomba for small American family?

Hey y'all, I went to toowoomba today to play some disc golf and really liked the town (I'm from a small farm town in the USA, and it felt closer to home, but better), but more importantly: I had a life changing meat pie and I need to return to have it again. Yes, I could drive up from Brisbane whenever I want, but I'd like to make it a small fam trip for me, my partner, and my 4 year old. And they need to experience this meat pie.

I need to find some compelling reasons to drag them up there, have ourselves a good time in toowoomba. We like and can get into nearly anything, so I'm just here to hear what the locals have to say, and hopefully we'll be up there sooner than later!

Recent 42 yo graduate from USA on temp Visa, are engineering graduate programs right for me?

Hey all,

So, I went back to school for mechanical engineering at the ripe age of 37. Just as I was entering my final year, my wife was recruited and hired to do some amazing work in the speech pathology world here in Brisbane. I know everyone's having a rough go with the job search, but I've been applying for these graduate programs with zero luck even landing an interview. I don't know if it's because I am American (maybe they prioritize grads from Aussie universities?), or that I have quite the resume that shows my age (including owning a business), or maybe everyone is going through the same thing.

Are these graduate programs restricted to either conventional aged students or citizens? Or maybe do I need to dilute my resume down to one page and remove some past jobs? Anyone have any pointers for this scenario? It's very likely we'll be staying for quite a while (we love it here and the Australian demand for my wife's work is very high), but yeah, hard to make ends meet on the one income.

Thanks in advance!
