What music is marketed at my vague age group (mid-30s-early 40s) these days?

Looking back to the first part of the 90s in the UK it seems a lot of music media (late night radio 1, Q Magazine, Britain's first national commercial pop station Virgin radio) was aimed at people that were my current age. Crowded House, Automatic era REM, Peter Gabriel etc and the like come to mind (good stuff!!). My Mum was in that age group and liked all that (though she was adventurous enough to be a regular John Peel listener and interested in rap and dance too)

What is the modern equivalent of that kind of mature adult pop?

As a big Willow fan i'm deflated

EDIT- this was posted before Willow's championship celebration and much deserved fantastic reception on Dynamite. That soothed a lot of my fears that the booking behind Willow's win would damage her career or fan's perception of her. Renders this thread slightly moot tbh.

...by how her first world title win went down

She's been an A-player in the AEW women's division for a long time and I always assumed when she finally won the big one it would be a huge emotional moment with a good build. I certainly didn't anticipate that a lot of fans would be unhappy when she did it. Given a lot of people didn't want Thekla's reign to end and would have preferred her as Mercedes' Wembley opponent.

It just makes me sad to see the negative comments and is souring it a bit for me.. it feels really avoidable and unfair on her with how it's been booked ) :

Oh well, i'll smile anyway?

Just saw someone speculating about Addison Rae's next album- AR2. What i'm curious about is where her career will be at by the time she drops AR-15?

I see a nostalgic reprise of Fame is a Gun personally...

I don't get the reverence Alanis Morrisette is held in these days. Change my mind?

So a ton of modern acts I love (Olivia Rodrigo, Chappell Roan, Lauren from Chvrches) not only like Alanis and Jagged Little Pill but consider it one of the best albums ever and her as their favourite artist.

I was around 12 when JLP was tearing up the charts and had no strong feelings. I was a little Britpop kid dipping his toes into alternative and even then i could tell the hip indie consensus was disparaging of her (which might surprise people now). There was a whole popular comedy routine in the UK about her failing to understand what irony is (which i think is still valid- that song should be called "Very Unlucky" or something).

..but as a mature (erm.. i hope) early middle aged adult i have cast off a lot of the British music press consensus and enjoy a lot of stuff the NME told me was unhip when my brain was developing. But.. Alanis? I don't get it. Bare in mind i am just going on the singles here. Never heard JLP back-to-back. But it seems she overuses the list-song format (Ironic, You Learn, Hand in Pocket) in a way that feels very formulaic/songwriting 101 and i am not sure what emotion that's invoking in others.

You Oughta Know is my favourite of the JLP singles but i think another common critique of it at the time of "Courtney Love/Riot Grrl style female rage sanitised for mainstream consumption" is at least not entirely without merit. Actually my favourite song i've heard from her is Hands Clean from past the JLP peak- it's more specific and seems ahead of the curve proto/metoo in discussing grooming/age gap stuff within the industry.

So what am I missing? Would album tracks on JLP change my mind? Does she have a specific woman-centric resonance that even a generally female-artist stanning het man doesn't get? Is the fact i love her artistic children but not her just.. ironic?

Bizarre/unintentionally funny bits of music journalism.

From Q magazine (for many years the UK's leading middlebrow/adult orientated rock mag)..

I just find the Coldplay album review story sub-heading so funny and bizarre. I don't dislike Coldplay at all... but they're the ultimate "casual listener" band. It's hard to imagine anyone sweating at the thought that their new album might be disappointing. I guess a populist rock mag was just assuming being really commercially big meant really important to people- not inoffensive enough to have a wide appeal.

Ironically I don't think the album in question (X&Y) IS as well regarded as the two it followed among their fans...

Do you have any of your own personal nicknames or special descriptors for Olivia?

I call her "The Prince That Was Promised" lol. I didn't come up with it but i can't recall who i initially saw call her that. It's a Game of Thrones/ASOIAF reference for a prophesied saviour figure (who despite the "prince" turns out to be Daenerys- a young woman)

I think i initially thought of in the tongue in cheek context of being a mythic "chosen one" to bring rock and alternative sounds back to the mainstream but in general she is such a rare unicorn of an artist.

I'm suprised people don't use "the Brit School sound" as a genre descriptor.

The Brit School is the UK's one state funded/no fees stage school. When it comes to its famous alumni (from legends like Amy Winehouse and Adele to the currently huge Olivia Dean) there seems to be a real lean toward "classy" jazz-tinged retro soul. Todd pointed this out as the general tenor of most UK r'n'b that breaks big but this still seemed noteworthy.

Olivia's new album is essentially "The Cure on Broadway"

Ms Rodrigo grew up a theatre kid.. there's a video of her at 8 years old singing Barbra Streisand. Then famously she got heavily into alt-rock. As much as part of me might miss the pure fun factor of her early pop-punk hits - i feel like she is running showstopping ballads through an 80s alt rock filter here. Truly synthesizing her musical DNA in the process. I recall how Springsteen hit on a meld of Dylan and Spector on his third album and started to solidify a signature sound as a generational songwriting talent. I am bold to say Olivia is on that path now too.

Girl so Sad is at 3.91 on Rateyourmusic!

If you don't know the site it's the biggest music reviewing/rating site (like a music Letterboxd).. i was honestly stunned the score is so high after almost a thousand ratings. Not cos it's undeserved but because the site's user base generally skews toward avant garde and alternative genres (RYMcore is even an unofficial genre) and mainstream pop tends to get a rough ride on there.

3.91 is a high score for a contemporary album even in the site's pet genres and is just nuts for a "pop" album. This and the high pitchfork score just confirms my suspicion that this album is gonna be critical catnip.

I usually hate "i'm a straight guy is it ok if i like this" posts on pop girl subs but..

...since this sub actually mentions being for girls and gays. Is it intrusive for 41 yr old straight married me being here? Not fishing for reassurance and 100% chill if not. Can always lurk for career info and not post. Which obviously i'd not get on the simp subs - that i wouldn't dream of following anyway.

I'm here as i like Addison's music (duh) and as a pop geek i find her whole anti-nepo tiktoker to alt-pop critical darling journey super interesting. She seems so nice and genuine and it's really sweet how so many of the main pop girls seem to have basically adopted her. A big breath of fresh air and feel good vibes all round.

Well salutations from early middle age normie-ville regardless and hope you are all having a wonderful day!

I sometimes wonder how insanely long running soap cast members stay sane?

Not that it isn't enviably solid work and artistically fulfilling and what not .. but in an age of eight episode TV dramas that drop a series/season every three years the- classic soap format seems nuts.

You look at Steve McFadden or Adam Woodyatt and it's just hard for me to imagine playing the same role, all year round for decades. I wonder if it's hard for the lines not to blur between them and their characters when it's that constant and for that long.

Sabrina would have fit right in to the Old Hollywood era.

... I mean besides some of her most X-rated humour of course 🤣

One of the reasons I like her is she deffo feels like a throwback to the era of "all round entertainers" from the age of grand movie musicals and TV variety shows. The kind who could sing, dance, act and do comedy at the top level. I don't think there's been a star in years who has that vibe to the extent Sabrina does.

In fact I'd even pitch here to lead a remake of Gentleman Prefer Blondes... with Olivia Rodrigo in the Jane Russell/brunette role.
